Text:<\/strong> Matthew 27:27-54<\/p>\n

INTODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

The word Passion as used Galatians 5:24 can be defined as\u00a0strong\u00a0feeling, intense desire or enthusiasm towards something.\u00a0 It is also referred to as affection and lust of the flesh.\u00a0 Paul in his letter\u00a0said\u00a0\u201cthose who are Christ\u2019s have crucified the flesh and its passion and desires\u201d.\u00a0 However, when Passion is used in relation to Jesus Christ, it refers to his suffering and death, in which case it is prefixed by the word \u201cThe\u201d, The Passion (of Jesus Christ).\u00a0 In the Christian world, this period is referred to as the \u201cThe Passion Week\u201d. It starts from \u201cPalm Sunday\u201d when Jesus triumphantly entered into Jerusalem as a king, through to \u201cGood Friday\u201d, when he was crucified.\u00a0 In our study, we shall examine some of the agonies and pains experienced by our Lord Jesus during \u201cThe Passion Week\u201d.<\/p>\n

LESSON OBJECTIVES<\/strong><\/p>\n

The objectives of this study are:<\/em><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To Critically examine Christ suffering.<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. To understand why He needed to go through all the sufferings.<\/em><\/li>\n
  3. To understand how we are to reciprocate the sacrifice of Christ for us.<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. To examine Christ seven last statements on the cross.<\/em><\/li>\n
  5. To identify some of the miraculous events that accompanied the death of Christ.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    BIBLE TRUTH<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Q1. Read and briefly comment on the following pains suffered by our Lord Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. False witness against Him.\u00a0 Matthew 26:59-61 <\/strong>Two witnesses who claim to testify against Christ came forward and said, \u201cThis man said I am able to destroy the\u00a0Temple of God\u00a0and rebuild it in three days\u201d.\u00a0 This was false.\u00a0 Jesus said, \u201cDestroy\u00a0this templeand in three days I will raise it up\u201d.\u00a0 However, He never referred to the infrastructural Temple of God; rather He was referring to His Body, His death and resurrection, which the\u00a0so-called\u00a0witnesses failed to understand.\u00a0 In ignorance, they testified falsely against Christ.\u00a0 This must have really caused Jesus a great deal of pain.<\/li>\n
    2. Smitten and spat on.\u00a0 Mark 14:65, 15:19: John 18:22<\/strong> It was a public humiliation of an innocent man.\u00a0 There was no basis for such treatment, but for His obedience to the command of His Father.\u00a0 He neither complained nor reacted in any form.<\/li>\n
    3. Given gall and vinegar.\u00a0 John 19:28-29: Matthew 27:34, 48 <\/strong>It is unimaginable to think of offering bitter or sour liquid to a man hungry and thirsty of water.\u00a0 What a mockery!<\/li>\n
    4. Hands and feet pierced. John 19:37; 20:25-27 <\/strong>Jesus was nailed to the cross alive.\u00a0 This was\u00a0physical\u00a0injury with great pain.\u00a0 The excruciating pain is better imagined than experienced.<\/li>\n
    5. Mocked while dying.\u00a0 Matthew 27:39-40 <\/strong>While in great pain and distress, deserted by His disciples, needing encouragement and comfort.\u00a0 Even His kinsmen mocked Him.<\/li>\n
    6. His side was pierced. John 19:34 <\/strong>The only way the soldiers who crucified Him thought right to ascertain whether He was still alive while hanging on the cross, was to pierce His side with a spear.\u00a0 What an act of merciless cruelty!<\/li>\n
    7. Flogged with a whip.\u00a0 Matthew 27:26 <\/strong>Jesus was flogged, not with just an ordinary whip, but one with thorns which made visible marks of injury all over His body.<\/li>\n
    8. He was stripped and worn a crown of thorns.\u00a0 Matthew 27:28-29 <\/strong>The soldiers forced the \u201ccrown\u201d on His head that pierced His head and blood gushed out while stripped, while they shouted a mockery slogan \u2013 \u201cKing of the Jews\u201d.\u00a0 The worst criminal was never treated this way.<\/li>\n
    9. He carried His heavy cross to the crucifixion site.\u00a0 John 19:17 <\/strong>Christ was forced to carry the heavy cross on which He was to be crucified.\u00a0 With all the torture He had received, He was still subjected to the heavy weight of the cross.<\/li>\n
    10. Nailed on the Cross among criminals. Matthew 27:35, 38: John 19:18 <\/strong>What a contradiction!\u00a0 An innocent man numbered among criminals.<\/li>\n
    11. Forsaken by God the Father, on account of Sin.\u00a0 Matthew 27:46 <\/strong>For an\u00a0offence\u00a0He never committed, His Father \u2013 on whose order and in obedience to whose will, for which He was being tortured \u2013 turned His back on Him.\u00a0 There is no doubt that at such a time, the encouraging words of a father was very necessary, but He never received any.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Q2. Why did Jesus go through all these sufferings? Matthew 8:16-17; Romans 8:25; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Isaiah 53:4-5<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Jesus went through the sufferings, firstly to fulfill the prophecy concerning Him, Isaiah 53:4-5 and secondly, to accomplish His mission on earth.\u00a0 He came to redeem sinners, you and me, from the consequences of sin.\u00a0 The penalty of sin is death.\u00a0 For\u00a0sin\u00a0to be forgiven the penalty must, of necessity, be paid by the\u00a0redeemer; and this involves a process of sufferings that lead to death.\u00a0 The scriptures say, \u201cThe wages of sin is death\u201d.\u00a0 In other words, for sin to be forgiven, a sinless person must die.\u00a0 It was His love for us that made Him endure the pains, the agonies, the afflictions, the contradictions and the eventual death on the cross.\u00a0 He was willing to subject Himself to the will of His Father.\u00a0 He was sent as a sacrifice to take away sin.\u00a0 Christ\u2019s love for us made Him offer a solution\u00a0for\u00a0the problem of sin.\u00a0 He suffered and died for our sake.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Q3. How are we to reciprocate the sacrifice of Christ for us?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      If Christ loved us so much that He died for us, we can only reciprocate this sacrifice by loving Him\u00a0absolutely,\u00a0and demonstrate this love by maintaining a passionate hatred for sin. We should live our lives to please Him.\u00a0 He commands us to express this love to others, especially those who have not known about His love for them.\u00a0 We must take this command seriously by telling them about His love and encouraging them to embrace it and reach out for their salvation that comes through this love.\u00a0 We must not fail to let them know the danger inherent in ignoring the love of Christ for them.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Q4. Identify and briefly comment on the seven last statements of Jesus on the cross.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u201cFather forgive them for they know not what they do\u201d, Luke 23:34. <\/strong>Though facing imminent death, Jesus demonstrated His unfeigned love to His \u2018enemies\u2019.\u00a0 He was careful to understand their state of ignorance and prayed that they\u00a0be\u00a0forgiven their sins.\u00a0 This was the very reason for His Passion.<\/li>\n
      2. \u201cVerily I say unto thee, today shall thou be with me in Paradise\u201d, Luke 23:43. <\/strong>This statement was directed to one of the two criminals who\u00a0were\u00a0crucified with Him.\u00a0 He acknowledged Jesus as a King whose kingdom would soon appear.\u00a0 While dying, his faith in the ability of Jesus to turn things around for him remained very strong.\u00a0 He saw beyond the cross to the coming Glory.<\/li>\n
      3. \u201cMother behold thy son, son behold thy mother\u201d, John 19:26-27. <\/strong>While on the cross, Jesus showed concern for His mother\u2019s welfare.\u00a0 He instructed John, one of the disciples to take care of her as would a son.\u00a0 Not many sons nowadays show concern for their parents.\u00a0 It is the responsibility of sons to take care of their parents under any circumstances.\u00a0 Nothing should excuse us from taking care of our parents.<\/li>\n
      4. \u201cEli, Eli, Lamasabachthani\u201d, Matthew 27:46. <\/strong>The statement is interpreted as \u201cMy God, my God, why\u00a0has\u00a0thou forsaken me?\u201d It was an exclamation of a humble spiritual agony of separation from His God as a result of the burden of sin He had to bear in His body in order to free us from the consequences of sin.\u00a0 Jesus suffered this separation, a similitude of the second death, so we would never experience it.<\/li>\n
      5. \u201cI thirst\u201d, John 19:28. <\/strong>This statement came in order that the prophecy of King David concerning Him, the Messiah, might be fulfilled, Psalm 69:21.<\/li>\n
      6. \u201cIt is finished\u201d, John 19:30.\u00a0 <\/strong>Having fulfilled the last prophecy concerning Him, there was\u00a0need\u00a0for a declaration of the completion of His assignment on earth \u2013 the account of salvation had been settled.<\/li>\n
      7. \u201cFather into thy hands, I commit my Spirit\u201d, Luke 23:46.\u00a0 <\/strong>For death to occur, the spirit must be separated from the body.\u00a0 Jesus had earlier assured that He would lay down His life, so He could take it again.\u00a0 To do this, He needed to hand over His spirit which was from the Father, back to Him for keeps until the resurrection morning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

         <\/p>\n

        Q5. Identify some of the significant events that accompanied Christ\u2019s death.\u00a0 Matthew 27:50-54<\/strong><\/p>\n

        The first miraculous event that occurred at Christ\u2019s death was the splitting into two of the Veil that separated the Sanctuary from the common hall of the Temple, from top to bottom, demonstrating the removal of the barrier between man and God as a result of sin, and that free access\u00a0into\u00a0God\u2019s presence has now been provided.<\/p>\n

        There was an earthquake that rocked the fabrics of the earth and rented the rocks and tombs. This gave rise to the confession of the Roman officer and soldiers that were\u00a0eye witnesses\u00a0that, \u201cthis man was truly the Son of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Daily living application<\/strong><\/p>\n

        The sinless servant of God offered Himself for our sins.\u00a0 He is the lamb offered for the sin of all people.\u00a0 He suffered and died for our sake.\u00a0 He bore our sins to make us acceptable to God.\u00a0 What can we say to such love?\u00a0 How will we respond to Him?\u00a0 By\u00a0Him\u00a0we now belong to an enormous family of believers who\u00a0have\u00a0become right with God.\u00a0 Not by our work but by the great work on the cross.\u00a0 We are justified because we have received Christ, the righteous Son of God, as our Savior and Lord.\u00a0 Our life of sin has been stripped away and we are clothed with Christ\u2019s goodness.\u00a0 Sin separates us from God and brings us pain and suffering.\u00a0 But if we confess our sins and repent of them, God will forgive us.\u00a0 God experiences joy when a sinner repents and returns to Him.\u00a0 What a friend we have in Jesus.\u00a0 All our grief and sins He has borne.\u00a0 To God be the glory!<\/p>\n

        Memory verse<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Isaiah 53:5 – \u201cBut He was wounded for our transgression, He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and\u00a0by His\u00a0strips\u00a0we were healed.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
