Mark 16:15-18; Luke 10:19

God has always been interested in man’s welfare. Hence at the conclusion of creation, He handed over the entire ecreation to man and delegated to him authority (power) over creation, commanding him to have dominion over the earth and to subdue and replenish it, Genesis 1:26-28.

When man sinned and lost that authority, GOD put in place an arrangement whereby the lost authority will be restored to man. Through the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of the LORD JESUS, man’s redemption was accomplished. Anyone therefore who believes in the LORD JESUS experiences salvation from sin and its consequences and they are restored into fellowship with GOD who delegates His authority (power) to him again as His representative on earth.

GOD’s plan therefore is to manifest His power through the believer in many ways for the erring world to see and repent. GOD’S power can be manifested by the believer through signs and wonders. His power can also be manifested in the expression of love and unity by believers towards each other. GOD’s power can also be expressed or manifested by the believer in holy living.

This first part of this series of lessons on “Manifestation of GOD’s power” (drawn from Acts chapters 3 to 5) focuses on manifesting His power in signs, wonders and miracles.

What do you understand by power in this context and who is to manifest it?

Power as used in the context of this lesson refers to supernatural power, that is the power that comes from GOD. We read in Matthew 10:1, “And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.” Also it is recorded in Luke 10:19, “Behold I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Mark 16:17-18 declares expressly, “And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.” The LORD JESUS while on earth demonstrated GOD’s power for all to see, He healed the sick, cast out devils, raised the dead, fed the hungry, opened the eyes of the blind, the ears of the deaf, etc. He also empowered His followers to exercise the same power and authority from GOD as revealed in the Scriptures above. Thus GOD has delegated to the believer power, authority, and dominion over nature. By that power, the believer can change the course of nature and by that God-given authority, ha can bring out supernatural intervention in the affairs of men. This has always been God’s desire for His children.

It is to be emphasized that we are talking about God’s power and only believers (His children) can exercise this power on His behalf. God’s children are those who have had conversion experience; those who are “born-again”. Such persons have left the old sinful life and are living as new creatures in Christ. You cannot manifest God’s power unless you are His child.

What do you understand by signs, wonders and miracles?

Signs, wonders and miracles collectively constitute/represent supernatural manifestations revealing GOD’s power over nature and the affairs of men in general. Such signs, wonders and miracles usually will bring changes in human situations and the course of nature. GOD uses these manifestations (signs, wonders and miracles) and the gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT to attract men to Himself and to confirm the truth of His Word.

There are several examples of the manifestations of GOD’s power revealed in signs, wonders and miracles in both Testaments of the Bible. GOD used Moses to demonstrate HIS power before Pharaoh and in the wilderness. Joshua, also using GOD’s power, command the sun and the moon to “stand still” and both obeyed, Joshua 10:12-14. Elijah and Elisha manifested GOD’s power in many notable miracles, 1 Kings 17:8-16; 2 Kings 4:1-7.

In the New Testament, the LORD JESUS demonstrated the power of GOD in “signs, wonders and miracles”, when He was physically on the earth. This is certainly not surprising because He is GOD indeed. He delegated this authority of manifesting GOD’s power to His followers when He was leaving the world. It is written in John 14:12, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father”, see also Acts 1:8; Mark 16:15-18. There are several instances in the New Testament when GOD used believers to perform signs, wonders and miracles.

Examine the healing of “the lame man”.
