Hymn: My faith looks up to Thee… CENTRAL THOUGHTMaking ourselves amenable to the Great Potter brings forth character, faith, and a life that glorifies the risen Christ. TEXT: JEREMIAH 18:1-23INTRODUCTION:In this third part of the lessons on the book of Jeremiah, we draw valuable lessons from Jeremiah’s visit to the Potter’s workshop, as instructed by the Lord. By Jeremiah’s observations of what the Potter did, a divine message came forth. Sometimes, what is seen by the eyes makes a deep impression on our hearts. There are many testimonies of individuals who came into a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ through observing the lives of believers. What they saw was as good as a sermon. The humble workings of the Potter on the clay and his wheel reflect what the Lord does with anyone willing to submit to Him. The ultimate outcome of the finished product is not one conceived by the clay but the Potter. The clay is not expected to struggle with the Potter as it is being worked on the wheel, but only to be available to be worked upon. The clay is not expected to dictate to the Potter to be like another finished pottery. That is the plight of some Christians who want to...
Learn MoreHymn: WHEN ALL THY MERCIES, O MY GOD CENTRAL THOUGHTThere is no amount of religious camouflage that can make up for sin and unfaithfulness to the Lord. INTRODUCTION:In this second part of the lessons on the book of Jeremiah, we observe the unfolding of the ministry of Jeremiah to the nation of Judah. For about 40 years, Jeremiah served as God’s spokesperson to the kings and people of Judah (Southern Kingdom) during the reigns of Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. As alluded in the first lesson the task was not a mean one but was characterized by opposition and fierce resistance from the people and kings who had sold their hearts to foreign gods, abomination, wicked and oppressive ways. It was a case of if “the people-would-heed-the-word-of-the- Lord”, then hope and restoration will be theirs from the Lord. It will avert the imminent judgement of God from the Babylonian empire. The response of Judah in the days of Jeremiah to the word of the Lord is very similar to what we observe today. Instead of repentance, there was an increase in sophisticated religious practices; instead of a return to righteous ways, people chose to trust in emblems of religion-the magnificent temple built by king Solomon.Today, we pride ourselves...
Learn MoreCENTRAL THOUGHTA godly conditioned heart is of great value. Hymn: “ WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS”. TEXT: JEREMIAH 1:1-19 INTRODUCTION:It is not unusual to be overwhelmed by circumstances and challenges that a new venture presents. After proper assessment of our capabilities in relation to the imperatives, demands and responsibilities of such a venture or project we either decline or proceed with it. The call of God on Jeremiah to present His divine perspective to the kings and people of Judah was an enormous task. It meant that Jeremiah will be the voice of God to the nation. The task would not have been overwhelming if it was nation whose people and leaders followed the Lord, but for most of the time that was not the case. When Jeremiah began his ministry, the Northern Kingdom of Israel had already been in captivity to Assyria for nearly one hundred years. Of the five kings during whose reigns Jeremiah prophesied, two ruled only for 3 months. These were Jehoahaz (2 Kings 23:31-33) and Jehoiachin (2 Kings 24:6-16). They were both evil kings who perpetuated the evil deeds of previous kings like Ahaz (2 Kings 16:1-4), Manasseh (2 Kings 21:1-6) and Amon (2 Kings 21:19-22). During Josiah’s reign when Jeremiah began his ministry,...
Learn MoreHymn: WHEN WE WALK WITH THE LORD CENTRAL THOUGHTTithe and Offering are obligations of the Christian done in honor to God. TEXT: MAL 3:7-12, PROV. 3:9-10, GEN 14:18-20 INTRODUCTION:The payment of tithe was first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 14:20 when Abraham gave tithes of his goods to Melchizedek; the priest of the Most High God.The tithing system was practiced during the time of Moses (Lev. 27:30-34; Deut. 14:22) and the Israelites were expected to give one tenth of their earnings in cash or kind for the upkeep of the Levites and administration of the Temple. This continued until the time of Malachi when the people refused to give tithes and the Levites went to work to earn a living, thereby neglecting their God-given responsibilities to care for the Temple. God became angry and unhappy with His people for their refusal to give tithe and offering. In the present-day Church, the main source of income is through tithe and offering. Without it, financial obligations will be left unattended to. This makes it imperative for every believer to pay his tithe and give offering for the advancement of God’s kingdom on earth. Deferred payment or part payment is not encouraged as it attracts twenty percent interest, Lev. 27:31.Every believer...
Learn MoreHymn: I am Thine O Lord CENTRAL THOUGHTDedication and loyalty are attributes which God expects of every believer. TEXT: 1 THESS. 2:1-20, JER. 35:1-19 INTRODUCTION:Dedication means giving of or devoting our time, energy and resources to a cause or a purpose, belief or person. For the believer, dedication is unto God and this involves a whole hearted commitment to Him, His word, work and people. Loyalty on the other hand means to be true and faithful to a cause, purpose, idea or person. To us as believers it involves our total obedience and submission to the will and purposes of God, Jesus said “ I must work the works of Him who sent me….(John 9:4). He was loyal to His Father. So, we must be to the Lord.People could be dedicated to a cause out of compulsion, for eye-service, or for vain and self-glory. Thus, we see that even when the purpose of such a cause or person is not too clear or fully understood, some people still follow blindly giving their time, talent, and other resources. God does not desire us to follow Him blindly, or without a clear motive or purpose. In fact, He desires us to follow Him with a clear conscience and understanding. In this...
Learn MoreHYMN: RECEIVING FROM GOD CENTRAL THOUGHTGod, who is our source, is ever willing to answer our needs. TEXT: MATT. 7:7-11, JOHN 14:13-14, JAMES 4:1-4INTRODUCTION:The believer in Christ has every reason to be perpetually joyful because of the tremendous promises of God as a result of the finished work that Christ has accomplished by His death and resurrection. The promises contain benefits, rights, privileges, inheritances, and blessings for the believer. Since these benefits have been duly paid for by Christ, it is futile for anyone to strive to attain them by his own strength or effort. These benefits are free for those already washed in the blood of Christ. In this lesson, we want to establish how a believer can fully appropriate these promises and benefits. The phrase “Receiving from God” simply means getting from God. There is the giver and there is the receiver. The giver who is superior is the Almighty God who gives liberally to whosoever wishes to receive (receiver). This study hopes to acquaint “whosoever” chooses or wishes to be a receiver with the conditions of receiving from the Almighty giver. David recognized that it is only God that could give, hence he trusted wholeheartedly in the Almighty God. Therefore, we should note that our help...
