FAITH THAT HEALS, October 17th, 2021

CENTRAL THOUGHT

Faith is believing God’s word firmly and acting on it.

HYMN: WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS

Text: Matt. 9:18-26, Mark 5:21-

43

Reading Text: Mark 5:21-43

Introduction:

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1). Faith is not a feeling or sense knowledge. It is simply and firmly believing that God is not a liar and that the Lord Jesus is not a deceiver; that the promises of God (including healing) are true when the conditions are met.

Jairus and the woman with the issue of blood expressed faith in Christ Jesus and their faith comes through the knowledge of the word of God, by hearing, reading and heartily accepting/acting God’s word. The woman, “when she heard of Jesus said if I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole” (Mark 5:27 & 28). Jairus believed that Jesus could heal his daughter. No matter how hopeless the circumstances may seem, or how impossible they may look, we can believe God, with whom all things are possible (Mark 10:27).

LESSON OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this study are:

  1. To highlight who Jairus and the Woman with the issue of blood were, and their problem.
  2. To know how they reacted to their situations.
  3. To understand what the Lord Jesus did for them.
  4. To appreciate the lessons believers can derive from their experience.

Bible Truth

Q1. JAIRUS’ DAUGHTER RAISED TO LIFE.

a.) Who was Jairus and what was his problem? Matt. 9:18A, Mark 5:22-23, 35.

Jairus was one of the rulers of the synagogue. He had a little daughter who was sick and later died.

b.) Read Matthew 9:18, Mark 5:22-23, and comment on:

1.) His humility…… “and when he saw Him (Jesus) he fell at His feet…. And worshipped Him”. This man was extremely humble despite his position in the society. He never thought of how his followers would react to his action; he knew what he wanted and defied all odds to reach the Lord Jesus.

2.) His faith: Jairus had a great faith. When the daughter was sick, he believed that by the laying on of hands by the Lord Jesus, his daughter could be healed. When the report came that the daughter had died, he still trusted that Christ was able to bring her back to life.

c.) Explain the significance of the statement of the Lord Jesus made in Mark 5:36, 39 and Matt. 9:2 “Be not afraid, only believe”. Faith is very important in the life of every believer. What believers need is to have faith and trust Him absolutely. The saints of old like Moses and Elijah had power with God. Heb. 11:32-35, 39 says “What shall I more say? For the time would fail to tell of Gideon, Samson, Abraham, Philip, Stephen, Peter… who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouth of lions, quenched the violence of fire… made strong, waxed, valiant…. Women also received their dead to life again… All these obtained a good report through faith”. God’s promises are sure, His word has never failed and will not fail in our time.

d.) What was the result of his faith?

“And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them, why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment (Mark 5:38- 42). His faith was rewarded; his daughter was brought back to life.

e.) Is there any challenge in this account for the believers today? Believer’s today should believe the Lord for who He is and put faith in His promises and His word. The word of God is so effectual and   only    those that believe can receive. Signs and wonders, miracles, divine healings and all kinds of God’s wonderful acts are still possible today as it was in ages past.

Q2A. A WOMAN’S ISSUE OF BLOOD HEALED.

  1. What was the woman’s problem? Mark 5:25-26, Matt. 9:20

The scriptures record that the woman had a disease of an issue of blood for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had; yet instead of getting better she grew worse.

Q2B. READ MATT. 9:21, MARK 5:27-33 AND COMMENT ON THE STEPS THE WOMAN TOOK TO RECEIVE HER HEALING.

In the first place the woman heard of Jesus. Before now she had suffered many things of many physicians and she had spent all that she had and nothing was bettered but rather grew worse (Mark 5:26). NIV COMMENTARY SAYS: She desperately wanted Jesus to heal her, but she knew that her bleeding would cause Jesus to be unclean under Jewish law if she touched Him. Still the woman reached out by faith and was healed. Sometimes we feel that our problems will keep us from God. But He is always ready to help. We should never allow our fear to keep us from approaching Him. She said “if I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole”. She went behind Christ because of the press, touched His garment and immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

Q3. CONSIDER WHAT THE LORD DID IN EACH OF THESE OCCASSIONS.

Matt. 9:19, 22-25, Mark 5:30-34

Christ was concerned with their problems. He followed Jairus to his house and raised his daughter to life. In the case of the woman, virtue left Christ by which He knew that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said “who touched my clothes?” Mark 5:30. He further said, “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace and be whole of thy plague”.

He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities and willing to make us whole. All we need to do is to come to Him by faith.

Daily Living Application

God honors every expression of faith in Him and those who exercise such faith have long lasting testimonies. Jairus and the woman were people that had big problems and with faith they conquered those problems. We will never be disappointed if only we believe that with God all things are possible.

Memory Verse:

Mark 5:34

“And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”
