Central Thought: The birth of Jesus Christ brought redemption to mankind. Text Matthew 1:1-25 For over 400 years since the last Old Testament prophecies, the Jews waited for a leader who had been promised centuries before by inspired prophets. They believed that this leader would rescue them from their Roman oppressors and establish a new kingdom, but overlooked the prophecies which spoke of Him as a suffering servant who would be rejected and killed. Matthew, one of Jesus twelve disciples began his book by showing how Jesus Christ was a descendant of David. He went on to show that God did not send Jesus to be an earthly king, but a heavenly king whose kingdom is greater than David’s because it has no end. In this study, we shall be looking at the birth of this great and unique man that has transformed the lives of humanity. Questions & Answers 1. Examine the following prophesies concerning the Birth of Christ. Genesis 3:15, 49:10; Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7 & Micah 5:2 In Genesis 3:15, we read “And I will put enmity between the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head and thou shalt bruise his heel”. As God was passing sentences on man for his disobedience, He made a gracious promise of Christ as the deliverer of fallen man from the power of Satan. This promise was made to the hearing of our first parents, who doubtless, saw a door of hope opened to them. Our enemy will do anything he can do to get us to follow his evil path. God magnifies His grace in that though the woman was first in the transgression, yet she shall be saved in child bearing, i.e. by the promised seed who shall descend from her. “The scepter shall not depart from Judah. . .” Genesis 49:10. This meant that Judah’s line would produce the promised Messiah, Jesus. “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son . . . Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14. Prophet Isaiah in God’s name gave a sign of goodwill to Israel and to the house of David. In Isaiah 9:6-7, God also promised His people a Savior that will bring light to their dark world. He promised to send a Light who would shine on everyone living in the shadow of death. This light is both Might God (all powerful) and Counselor (all loving). In Micah 5:2, Prophet Micah accurately predicted Christ’s birthplace hundreds of years before He was born. Bethlehem signifies the house of bread, the fittest place for Him to be born in whom is the bread of life. Also, because it was the city of David, by a special providence, it was ordered the He should be born there. 2. What encouragements can we derive from the fulfillment of these prophesies? Habakkuk 2:3 reads, “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry”. Central Thought: Every Believer should demonstrate kindness.   Text:  Romans 12:9-10; John 15:12, 13, 17; Galatians 6:9-10.   Love to one another was a cardinal commandment that the Lord Jesus left with His disciples (John 15:12-13).  Kindness is a demonstration of love.  He demonstrated the kind of love He was teaching them by His sacrificial death on Calvary.  He expected His disciples to show the same to one another.  Actually He expected it to become the trade mark of their discipleship (John 13:35).   The problem is that showing kindness to others at times does not come so easy.  There is this tendency of refraining from people who are different from us racially, socially and religiously.  The Jews for example had no dealings with the Gentiles, hence Apostle Peter was initially reluctant to visit the house of Cornelius, until the revelation was made plain to him by God (Acts 10:10-22).   Love and kindness among Christians is more convincing and carries a stamp of genuiness if the obstacles and prejudices that hinder true Christian fellowship are removed.  We must allow the Holy Spirit to spread the genuine love of Christ in our hearts, so that we can learn to treat everybody with true brotherly kindness.     What do we understand by brotherly kindness? Kindness is a tool that displays Christian ethics.  Thus, brotherly kindness is the friendly and affectionate disposition we have towards one another that is borne out of our relationship as brethren. In Galatians 6:10, Apostle Paul emphasized this fact when he said that we are to do good to all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.  Members of the body of Christ have the unique qualification of being joint heirs in Christ Jesus.  Whatever is done to any member of the body of Christ is done to the Lord (Matthew 25:40).  It is for this reason that the believer must not miss any opportunity to show kindness to them.     How can we practically express brotherly kindness?  Acts 2:44-45; Matthew 25:35-40; Galatians 6:1-2 Every intended act of brotherly kindness not expressed is of no value.  A cup of water in the name of the Lord offered, as little as it may be, has its reward.  As we interact with members of the body of Christ, we are confronted daily with situations that require our response.  For example, we demonstrate brotherly kindness by our acceptance and willingness to associate with a brother or sister in the Lord, irrespective of the social class of the individual.  The church is made up of people who are differently placed in society.  Segregation based on class prevails in the larger society, but in the body of Christ, God frowns at it when we have respect of persons (James 2:1).  We are therefore admonished to condescend to men of low estate (Romans 12:16). This character attribute is also practically expressed in our willingness to share our resources with the less privileged in our midst not as refuges but as joint heirs in Christ (Acts 2:45). Apostasy Creeping into the Church   Central Thought: Believers must courageously believe the Word of God in these last days and reject what is false. Text: 2 Peter 2:1-22, Jude 20-25   Believers must diligently search the Holy Scriptures.  Any teaching that cannot be proven from the Scriptures must be rejected.  It does not matter who has brought it to us.  New doctrines, new revelations and new gospels are springing up almost daily.  The Bible clearly warns that in the last days strange doctrines will come forth introducing another Jesus, another Spirit, another gospel (Matthew 24:4-5, 2 Timothy 3:1-5). “The wicked one will come with the power of Satan and perform all kinds of false miracles and wonders, and use every kind of wicked deceit on those who will perish.  They will perish because they did not welcome the love and truth so as to be saved (2 Thessalonians 2:9-10).
