  CENTRAL THOUGHT Words carry power; we mar or make with them.   HYMN: I AM THIN O’ LORD Text: Prov. 12:17-19, 18:8, 21:23, Eccl. 5:2, Matt. 5:37, Eph. 4:29   Introduction: Spoken words carry power; they can have negative or positive influence/impact on the hearer. Therefore, every believer in Christ should heed the admonition of Scripture on words and keep a check on the words of our mouth.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To examine the negative influence of words. To discuss the positive impact of the words we speak To know how we can check the words of our mouth.   Q1. EXAMINE SOME NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF WORDS. Prov. 18:8, Numbers 13:26, 14:4, 36-37 Every word spoken has an influence on the hearer. Hence if you tell someone he has won a huge sum of money, the immediate impact on the hearer would be a smile. One the other hand, when a person is told harsh unkind and insulting words, the person would frown instead of smiling. This goes to show that every spoken word has an influence not only on the hearer but also carries power in the spirit realm. Prov. 18:8 states that the “words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly”. Wrong choice of words, or even right words spoken at a wrong time and situation, hurts deeply and was described as wounds that touches to the innermost part of the belly. The report by 10 out of the 12 spies sent out by Moses to spy the promise land (land of Canaan) was evil and as a result, the people panicked. They saw themselves as grasshoppers before the inhabitants of the land, which was described as a land that eateth up its inhabitants (Num. 13:32). The negative influence of these words made them say to themselves that they should choose a captain to take them back to Egypt. They made Israel murmur, thereby sinning against the Lord. The final influence/consequence of their words resulted in death. Num. 14:36-37. In contemporary times, spoken words have different negative influence on their hearers, spanning from making the hearer sad, discouraged, give up on life, have self-pity, regrets, ill health, commit suicide and where the hearer does not die physically, there could be spiritual consequences hence, some have backslidden leading to eternal death.   Q2. DISCUSS THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF THE WORDS WE SPEAK. Prov. 12:17-19, 21:23, Rom. 10:9, 10, 1 Pet. 3:10 Just as the words we speak have negative impact on the hearer, likewise they can have a positive impact on the hearers. Proverbs states that it establishes one’s righteousness and it also gives health- ex. Even when one is very ill and there seems to be no hope, the right words spoken could build up the individual’s faith, thereby restoring his health. Guiding the words we speak enables the believer to keep his soul out of troubles (Prov. 21:23). Our salvation is not complete until we believe in our hearts and confess the Lord Jesus as our Lord with our mouths (Rom. 10:9-10).   THE POWER OF WORDS (PART 1), August 16th, 2020 CENTRAL THOUGHT Our words carry power; we mar or make with them. HYMN: TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE   TEXT: Psalm 19:14, 34:12-13, Prov. 18:21, Rom. 10:6-13 INTRODUCTION: Spoken words are not ordinary, they carry power, they can lift, build, encourage, give hope, strength and give life; they can also destroy, mar, discourage, and kill. It is however sad, that most people including believers, are not conscious of the words they speak. It is common to see believers speak carelessly without weighing the impact of their words upon the hearers. The power of words is vivid at creation. God made the universe by His word (Gen. 1:1-15; Heb. 11:3). God also made man in His image and likeness; man who is God’s image also possesses creative powers in his words. This study will examine the power of words in the regenerated man.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand the meaning of the phrase “the Power of words”. How is the power of words reflected in our individual salvation? To know why it is necessary to check the words of our mouth.   Q1. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY “THE POWER OF WORDS” AS EXEMPLIFIED IN GENESIS 1:11-15, 20, 24 (Reflect on Numbers 23:19) The literary meaning of word is “a thing that you say” while power has been defined, in the context of our use by the Oxford Dictionary as “the ability to do something/to control people or thing”. When read together “power of words” means, the ability of the things you say to control people or things. The power of words therefore is the ability to control people or things by the things we say. This for the believers goes beyond the physical, but the believer through the power of words could control the physical as well as the spiritual. In Genesis God created the earth by the words of His mouth. Things came into being as He spoke. Scriptures recorded no resistance to the spoken words of God; once God spoke, it came to pass without delay. By the words of His mouth He made heaven and earth and all therein. The words God spoke were not ordinary, they carried power and fulfilled the purpose for which the words were spoken i.e. to create. As God’s people, we are to be mindful of our words. Believers have God’s nature and therefore possess the same creative power. But it is common knowledge that most believers’ words do not carry this same power and grace because they talk carelessly without realizing that they are gradually and constantly eroding the power of God carried by their words. Sin is also another factor that inhibits this power. In Num. 23:19, emphasis was placed on God’s ability to say and do what He said He would do. God’s word is eternal, nothing shall diminish it, even the earth and heaven would pass but His word abides forever. While men could lie, change their-minds, God is not like man. Apostasy Creeping into the Church   Central Thought: Believers must courageously believe the Word of God in these last days and reject what is false. HYMN: CHRISTIAN, SEEK NOT YET REPOSE   Text: 2 Peter 2:1-22, Jude 20-25   INTRODUCTION “We live in dangerous times”. “The world has become a lot more complex”. These are common sayings. Of course, the Scriptures declare that perilous times will come. The world in its operations has indeed witnessed changes that were considered unthinkable centuries ago but the operators have remained the same: the human heart is still as it was in the days of Noah or the days when Jesus of Nazareth walked upon the earth. Feats hitherto  unimagined have been accomplished by man. Space exploration has since progressed to space tourism. With the growing sophistication is an increased need for resources to cope with the attending economic pressure and distress. It is therefore not surprising to find that even believers in Christ are tempted to believe just about any teaching that helps them to acquire these resources. In a bid to enjoy “good success”, usually as defined by the world, believers have turned to teachings that are powered more by psychological principles than the pure word of God. If there was ever a courageous step that needs to be taken today by the believer in Christ Jesus, it is to painstakingly search the Word of God, “rightly dividing the truth of the Word”, and applying same to his life. This is because the church today is in a very sad state: apostasy is setting in as predicted in the Scriptures. “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (1 Tim. 4:1). It is instructive that the Lord Jesus never predicted extraordinary success for His church. What did He say? “…when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To understand the meaning of apostasy as revealed in the Scriptures. 2. To study the features of apostasy in the light of Scriptural examples. 3. To discuss the consequences of apostasy. 4. To discuss how believers can avoid becoming apostate.   BIBLE TRUTH: Q1. WHAT IS APOSTASY? Apostasy is the act of rebelling against, forsaking, abandoning, or falling away from what one has believed. When Paul wrote to Timothy saying that “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (1 Tim. 4:1), he is referring to the latter days of the Church, that is, those days immediately preceding the Rapture. In other words, the Spirit of God was emphasizing to believers that in the latter days some shall depart from the faith. Webster dictionary also defines apostasy as the “abandonment of what one has voluntarily professed; total desertion of the principles of faith”. HYMN: CHRISTIAN, SEEK NOT YET REPOSE TEXT: John 8:44, Matt. 4:1-11   INTRODUCTION The devil is a real and very dangerous enemy. He is a created spirit being. The devil’s primary work is deception and in doing this, he has his own synagogue (Rev. 2:9), gospel (Gal. 1:6-9), ministers (2 Cor 11:14-15), and communion table (1 Cor 10:20-21). For us not to fall prey into the devil’s net, this study will review the person of the devil, his devices (strategies) and how to handle him. LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand who the devil is. To review the devil’s strategies/devices. To understand Scriptural ways of handling the devil. To know the consequences of not handling the devil.   BIBLE TRUTH   Q1. WHO IS THE DEVIL? Isa. 14:12-15, Ez. 28:12-19, Rev. 12:9, 2 Cor. 2:11   The devil is a spirit by creation, and angel of light and an immediate attendant upon God’s throne, but by sin became an apostate (an irretrievable enemy of God) from his first state and a rebel against God’s crown and dignity. Multitudes of the angels fell, but this that attacked our first parents (Adam and Eve) was surely the prince of the devils, the ringleader in the rebellion: no sooner was he a sinner than he was a Satan, no sooner a traitor than a tempter, as one enraged against God and His glory, and envious of man and his happiness. He knew he could not destroy man but by debauching him. Balaam could not curse Israel, but he could tempt Israel (rev. 2:14). The game therefore which Satan had to play was to draw our first parents to sin, and so to induce separation between them and their God. Thus, the devil was, from the beginning a murderer, and the great mischief-maker. The whole race of mankind had here, as it were, but one neck (ancestry), and that Satan struck. As a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8), Satan tempts under three forms:   The subtle serpent: to beguile our senses, prevent our judgements, enchant our imagination, As an angel of light: to deceive us with false views of spiritual things, refinements in religion, and presumption on the providence and grace of God. As a roaring lion: to bear us down and destroy us by violent opposition, persecution, and death. The adversary and enemy is that wicked one.   Q2. WHAT ARE THE DEVICES/STRATEGIES THE DEVIL USES IN DEBAUCHING MAN?   Deception: The major device the devil uses, is deception. He tends to counterfeit all the good ways and precepts God had given to man. Deception is the use of deceit, trickery etc. to make someone or group of persons stray from their original beliefs, focus and plans (Eph. 6:10-11). He is wily. This means that he prepares scenarios and plans with the sole purpose of deceiving you and capturing you. Sometimes it seems hard to believe how far he can go to achieve his purposes. He will use everyone that will give him access, even your parents, or anyone within his reach. CENTRAL THOUGHT Christians are to be spiritually alert and not asleep. HYMN: Christian, Seek Not Yet Repose TEXT: Eph. 5:11-15; Rev. 3:1-3; 1 Thess. 5:4-9 INRODUCTION The word ‘slumber’ is defined by the Oxford Advanced Learners dictionary to mean; sleep, time when somebody is asleep, to sleep is the natural state of rest in which one’s eyes are closed, and the body is not active and as well as the mind not being conscious. Rest in the form of sleep is good for the natural body. But spiritual slumber is a state of inactivity or dormancy in spiritual things. Believers that are not spiritually alert and have lost thought of the Lord’s return an be regarded as being in a state of sleep. Slumber or sleep is used as a metaphor for spiritual lethargy. Like sleep, a believer who slumbers is unconscious and can not face spiritual realities. A person who is asleep spiritually is indifferent, inactive and not sensitive to spiritual things while conforming to this world. The world is full of darkness and sin. This could be described sadly as the spiritual state of some believers. There is a wake-up call for the believer to be awake and alert. Paul’s admonition that we should not sleep is based on the second coming of the Lord, Romans 13:11-12. Believers are to wake up and become alert. LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To differentiate between spiritual slumber and spiritual deadness. 2. To identify the signs of spiritual slumber. 3. To know the dangers of spiritual slumber. 4. To understand ways to escape from spiritual slumber. BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPIRITUAL SLUMBER AND SPIRITUAL DEADNESS. Matthew 25:1- 13 Spiritual slumber is a state where one’s eyes are spiritually closed; he cannot perceive the things of God, and his/her mind is not responsive to God and God’s work. It also refers to those who have a reprobate mind and chose darkness instead of light. Matthew 25 vividly describes it as a state of unpreparedness by the virgins that slumbered and slept. They all set out to meet the bridegroom, but while they waited they slumbered. They were no more responsive to their environment until the bridegroom came. The five wise that were fully armed and prepared were welcomed into the marriage feast while the five foolish were shut out. Just as it is with the natural sleep, that no one can say at the exact time in which he/she slept so it is, with spiritual slumber. The believer that is in this state, started off as a child of God, but along the line, the vigor, strength, zeal and desire for God and all that is God’s gradually phases out. The things they once spoke against are now practiced and condoned by them. They also no more hear from God nor enjoy fellowship with God and the brethren. Doctrines that were cherished and upheld are dropped and put aside in the name of “it does not matter”. In contrast, the state of spiritual deadness is a state of complete separation from God, as physical death indicates a state of lifelessness so it is with a person that is spiritually dead, he/she has no spiritual life with the Lord. CENTRAL THOUGHT God’s presence creates awe and brings with it joy, comfort and security to the believer. HYMN: IN HIS PRESENCE THERE IS JOY TEXT: 1 Chron. 16:27-33; Psalms 139:7-13 INTRODUCTION God’s presence is sheer delight to every believer; it is in sharp contrast to the violence, greed, wickedness, pain, suffering, and insecurity that are all about us. The comfort and guidance that come with God’s presence have been the experience of many notable individuals in the Bible and of our contemporary world. For Moses, it gave rise to a radiance that beamed from his face after he had spent time in the presence of the Lord on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:29- 32), and when, because of the sin of Israel, God’s presence was to be replaced with that of an Angel, Moses was most displeased, Exodus 33. The Psalms reflect a man who had been in the presence of the Lord. These experiences show that God’s presence is not environment based, but comes from a walk with Him. The Lord’s presence is a delight to those who have committed their lives to Christ. Besides the comfort and security that the presence of the Lord gives believers, the consciousness of His presence steadies one’s walk with the Lord in upholding integrity and truthfulness at home, in business, at work, and in dealings with believers and unbelievers alike. His presence motivates a godly lifestyle, and will help anyone in sin abstain from anything that will dishonor the Lord. Those around us will sense something unique about us as we carry along with us His presence into all our endeavors. LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To have an understanding of His presence. 2. To have an assurance of the Lord’s presence. 3. To appreciate the impact of the Lord’s presence in all areas of our endeavors. 4. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE IN HIS PRESENCE? From Exodus 40:38 and 2 Chron. 5:14, we see that the children of Israel experienced the tangible manifestation of the presence of God as a sure indication of divine leading upon the nation and approval of their worship and sacrifices. Being in His presence assures us of being in His perfect will, it assures us of God’s leading upon our lives; it assures us of His approval; it shows to us that sin should have no place in us. Being in God’s presence means that the “glory of God has risen” upon our lives (Isaiah 60:1). Being in His presence also brings to mind the thought of being in worship at a personal or corporate level. “They raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: He is good; His love endures forever. Then the temple of the Lord was filled with a cloud”, 2 Chron. 5:13. During worship, the things of this world go strangely seem immaterial, rather the divine character and presence of God come into limelight. CENTRAL THOUGHT Fellowship with God is matured by spending time with Him. HYMN: OH, FOR A CLOSER WALK WITH GOD TEXT: Gen. 19:27; Luke 6:12-13, 11:1-4, Psalm 63:1-6 INTRODUCTION God wants to speak to us about the plan He has for our lives. His plan is a good one, but we are in danger of missing it if we don’t learn how to listen to and obey God’s voice. If we want to be led into victory by the Spirit of God, then we have to be willing to change our lifestyle as God speaks to us. The first change we may encounter is the need to create an atmosphere that is conductive to hearing from God. By this, we mean the environment, or predominant mood that surrounds us. Atmosphere is created by attitudes, and certain attitudes enhance or hinder our relationship with God. To enjoy the fulness of God’s presence we must consistently maintain an atmosphere conductive to seeking Him, honoring Him and being faithful and obedient to Him. Christians over the years have learned that certain disciplines and practices help them keep the spiritual channels open and keep the heart tuned toward God. These disciplines can’t save you; they can’t even make you a holy person. But they can heighten your desire, awareness and love of God by stripping down the barriers that you put up within yourself and some that others put up for you. Hence, the need for “Quiet Time” in the life of a believer. When practiced faithfully and regularly, as a habit or regular pattern in your life, it brings you back to God and opens you up to God.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To define quiet time. 2. To mention the purpose of quiet time. 3. To state the requirements of a meaningful quite time. 4. To highlight the benefits of quiet time. BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT IS QUIET TIME? Quiet time is a Christians’ ‘best time’ he or she set out in a day to fellowship with God. It is a spiritual discipline when practiced faithfully or regularly; it enhances a Christian’s relationship with God. It is a devotional practice that is traceable to the Lord Jesus Christ, as found in the New Testament, Luke 6:12, 11:1. Quiet time is a time when you are at your best to hear from God and also speak to God. This special time can become the anchor points of your life, a time when you ‘drive a stake’ as a landmark and go on from there. Your daily quiet time is more effective as you pray into day to day reality some of the things the Lord speaks to your heart in protracted times of prayers. The quiet time in turn is the foundation for ‘praying without ceasing’, going through the day in communion with God. Q2. DISCUSS THE PURPOSE OF QUIET TIME UNDER THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS: A. It is a very important aspect of every Christian’s life. Without prayer, the believer cannot live a successful Christian life here on earth. There are limitless opportunities open to a prayerful Christian. Prayer is what connects the believer to the Almighty God. Through prayer, we commune with God in order to deepen our intimacy and relationship with Him. Prayer is of utmost importance to our spiritual existence just as breathing is necessary to our physical existence. As prayerful Christians, we are assured of victorious Christian lives and power for effective Christian service. Our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, who is our perfect example, knew the importance of prayer. He started and ended with prayers. Therefore, as His followers, we must follow in His steps, 1 Peter 2:21b.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1.) To identify who is a prayerful Christian. 2.) To explain why a Christian should live a prayerful life. 3.) To know how we are to pray. 4.) To explain how a Christian can be effective in prayer.   BIBLE TRUTH Question 1) WHO IS A PRAYERFUL CHRISTIAN? A prayerful Christian is one who has made prayer a way of life, or a consistent spiritual habit, one who takes out time to seek God’s face on issues, situations or circumstances, trusting Him for a desired outcome. A prayerful Christian lives in obedience to Christ’s injunction that men ought always to pray and not faint, Luke 18:1. In this regard, Apostle Paul has enjoined us to pray without ceasing, 1 Thess. 5:17. The prayerful Christian therefore must be instant in prayer and persevere, never giving up no matter the odds. Question 2) WHY SHOULD A CHRISTIAN LIVE A PRAYERFUL LIFE? As was earlier mentioned in the introductory part of this study, prayer is said to be a means of communing and having a close relationship with God, our Father. Every child who loves his father, would always long to be with him and enjoy his company. A child of God should always long to commune with his heavenly Father. Prayer keeps alive the relationship between the Christian and God. Some of the reasons why a Christian should be prayerful are as follows: A. It is a Command (Luke 18:1; Col 4:2; 1 Thess. 5:17) The Christian has been commanded in the Scriptures to continue in prayer at all times. The Lord Jesus Christ gave the parable in Luke 18:1 to the effect that men ought always to pray and not to faint. Paul also commanded the Colossians in Col. 4:2 to continue in prayer and watch in the same with thanksgiving. He admonished the Thessalonians in 1 Thess. 5:17 to pray without ceasing. It is therefore imperative that every believer who wants to live a successful and obedient life unto God be prayerful at all times. B. He is a Watchman (Isa. 62:6-7; Jer. 1:10; Ezek. 3:17; Hab. 2:1) As watchmen, believers are expected to be prayerful. They must never hold their peace, they must continue in prayer.
