THE DANGER OF SHIFTING BLAMES, March 15th, 2020

CENTRAL THOUGHT The individual is fully responsible for his actions and decisions. HYMN: NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE   Text: 1 Samuel 15:1-35 Introduction: The consequences of our actions and decisions confront us on a daily basis. Sometimes, we prefer to wait for some other persons to point out to us our failures before we either admit them or pass them to some other persons. It takes the man of character to identify his failures and errors and seek God’s forgiveness. It takes greater courage to admit one’s error when they are pointed out to him. Saul was an individual who failed on these two aspects. When he spared Agag, the king of the Amalekites, and the best of the spoil of the battle, in utter disregard of the command of the Lord, he could not see his plight as one living in disobedience. Worse still when confronted with his error, he passed the blame to the people whom he governed. He simply lacked the character to be accountable for his actions. Other examples of persons who showed this trait were Adam, Eve, and Cain. They shifted responsibility for their actions to some other persons. In the case of Adam, he blamed God for being gracious in giving him a wife (Gen. 3:12). David was an exception to this trait. When his sins of adultery and murder were pointed out to him, he took full responsibility for his actions and sought God’s forgiveness. No wonder, Psalm 51 remains an epitome of a heart that is broken and contrite before the Lord. This character of being accountable was also demonstrated by Apostle Peter who sought forgiveness from the Lord after denying Him three consecutive times. Many, especially in leadership positions, think that it is a sign of weakness to admit one’s errors; it is a mark of great strength of character- one that clearly indicates a deep experiential knowledge of the grace of God. WHAT LESSONS CAN WE DRAW FROM GOD’S COMMAND TO SAUL? The Lord’s command to Saul is found in 1 Sam. 15:3 “Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle, and sheep, camels and donkeys”. Before the Lord gave Saul this command, He reminded him that the assignment accompanying the command was the outcome of power and authority that had been divinely bestowed on him as king of Israel. That sounds quite familiar to those who have had a walk with the Lord. When Samuel reminded Saul that it was the Lord God Almighty who anointed him to be king over Israel, it was intended to get Saul to have a proper perspective of the situation of things. However, this study was not designed to merely add to our stock of knowledge, but to bring about an attitudinal and behavioral change in us. As we address the issue of favoritism in our midst, we would not only be pleasing God but also healing the wounds and hurts in our homes, offices, churches and in the community.   CENTRAL THOUGHT Partiality among God’s people hinders fellowship. HYMN: JESUS WANTS ME FOR A SUNBEAM     Text: James 2:1-13, Matt. 20:20-23 INTRODUCTION Today’s topic focuses on an aspect of the human character that holds great potential for disunity, disintegration, and destruction in individuals, homes, and organizations. Since Christians have been called to live in love and unity, it becomes necessary to examine the subject of favoritism and the various forms in which it may manifest in the church and individual lives. By doing so, one might be able to use the word of God to do a fair assessment of oneself with a view to making adjustment if need be. In James 1:23, the Bible has been compared to a mirror by which we can examine our lives as individual Christians or bodies. As humans, we are apt to have preferences in our daily interactions with people. Much as this is not objectionable however, Christians must be careful not to allow such preferences put them at variance with God’s established standards. This is because God with whom we have to do, makes His rain and sun fall and shine respectively upon both the righteous and the unrighteous. He does not show respect of persons.     LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To understand what favoritism means 2. To examine some manifestations of favoritism 3. To examine the consequences of favoritism 4. To identify why people show favoritism. 5. To suggest ways of dealing with favoritism   Bible Truth: Q1. WHAT IS FAVORITISM? Favoritism is the act of being partial or biased towards a person or group. It is a display of special treatment accorded an individual or group usually at the expense of others. It implies treating one person different from another based on bias. Favoritism can also be defined as an unequal or unfair treatment of people. Although derived from the word favor, it is however used in the negative sense when one shows preferential treatment to an individual usually at the expense of others. Such preferential treatment is given on the basis of factors like the persons age, birth, tribe, family, sex, church, financial status, authority, political affiliations etc. It is described in some scriptural presentation as “respect of persons” (Deut. 1:17, 1 Peter 1:17) as being partial (Mal. 2:9, James 2:4) and partiality (1 Tim. 5:17, James 3:17). As Christians we need to understand that favoritism is not part of God’s character whom the Bible says judges or treats people according to their works or doings (Acts 10:34-35, Eph. 6:8-9, 1 Peter 1:17). We also need to realize that being impartial is an attribute of God (James 3:17) and needs to be cultivated.   Q2. ARE THERE EXAMPLES OF FAVORITISM IN THE BIBLE? In Gen 37:1-4, Jacob showed preferential treatment to Joseph above his other children. For Joseph, Jacob made a coat of many colors which incurred the envy of his brethren. James 2:1-3 gives a vivid account of how in the church, the rich are treated specially while the poor were despised. Similarly Acts 6:1 tells us how selective attention was paid to the native Jewish widows above the Grecian widows in the serving of food (i.e. the church welfare scheme). CENTRAL THOUGHT Angels are messengers of God sent to minister to the needs of the Saints.     HYMN: THE KING OF GLORY, HE IS GOD ALONE Text: Genesis 19:1-13, Exodus 33:1-2, Acts 12:6-11   Introduction: The word “Angel” means “messenger”. Angels are heavenly spirit beings of a higher nature than flesh and blood beings. They are not limited by time, space and physical barriers like closed doors, walls, and other material objects. There is no record to show exactly when the angels appeared in heaven but they were with God at creation to worship Him for things, created (Psalm 148:1-5). That does not imply however that they were not created. They were created by God for specific duties (Eze. 28:14-15). Generally, they are messengers of God to do His purposes on earth. Despite the fact that they have divine nature and are made a little more superior than mankind (Psalm 8:4-5), they are not to be worshipped. (Revelation 22:8-9). God certainly doesn’t want us to worship angels but He does want us to be aware of them, that they are living, active spirit beings work for Him in the unfolding of His mighty eternal plan. Specifically, they are in the service of God for men. Right form the first time the angelic ministry was revealed in the scriptures (Genesis 16:7-12), they have been seen to perform various duties on earth such as bringing down messages from God to man, acting as protectors and deliverers giving guidance and encouragement. These duties are found both in the Old and New Testaments. It is interesting to know that God has not withdrawn the angelic ministry from today’s church. They are to keep on ministering to those who will inherit salvation (Heb. 1:14). About the last function of angels to the saints on earth will be in heralding the coming of the Lord at rapture (1 Thess. 4:16). LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know who angels are To know the relevance of angels to the Christian To know the function of angels To know what the attitude of Saints to angels should be   Q1. WHAT ARE ANGELS? Angels are heavenly hosts who stand before God and carry out His will. They are also ministering spirits to those who are heirs of salvation. Angels are of a different but higher order than man (Ps. 8:5). They are without flesh and bones but spirit beings and not disembodied spirits, as they have bodies though not physical as humans. However, they have power to appear as physical beings when the need arises. They are not subject to death. Their number, therefore neither increases by procreation or by additional creation nor does it decrease by death or annihilation. Angels are free from frailties and oppression which are the bane of humans. Hunger, thirst, weariness and decay known to all men are unknown to angels. There are two classes of angels- the good and the bad. The good are those of the entire created host of them who remain loyal to God while the bad are those that went with Lucifer at his rebellion.   CENTRAL THOUGHT Remembering God’s wonders of old gives us fresh courage to face each new day. HYMN: O LORD, MY GOD, WHEN I IN AWESOME WONDER Text: Psalm 77:1-20, Exodus 14:22   Introduction: Remembering is to bring back to the mind through an act of memory, to become aware of or think again, to recall to the mind with effect or determination to retain in the mind: keep carefully in memory and to keep in mind as worthy of affection, reward or recognition. To remember therefore is to recall, recite or reproduce past experience. You therefore cannot remember what you have not known. It is what you have acquired through the senses that is seen, heard, felt, tasted and smelt that is memorable. Hence, we must have studied the word of God in some details to remember God’s wonders of old. “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth: but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:8). To have good success in this world full of evil, we must call to memory the great wonders of our God as this will give us the enduring faith to believe God for similar wonders in our lives. God wants us to remember His great works and be inspired, comforted an assured of His goodness. Our duty does not just end in remembering God’s wonders of old, we must teach it to our children, our children’s children and all others that come in contact with us. Gideon in, Judges 6:13, remembered the great miracles of God which their fathers taught or told them about.     LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To highlight some of the great wonders of God in the past. To appreciate why we should remember these great wonders of old. To understand the benefits of remembering God’s wonders of old. To examine the dangers of forgetting these great wonders.   Q1. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GREAT WONDERS OF GOD IN TIMES PAST? The great wonders of God of old are recorded in the Holy Bible. A few of them are: The Creation: Genesis 1:1-31, 2:1-25 Out of the state of formlessness, void-ness and darkness upon the face of the deep, God created all things. John 1:3 says “all things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made”. God’s ability to create something out of nothing still beats the imagination of science today, as all their theories about creation have one after another become obsolete. The works the hands of the Lord has made: the stars, wind, rain, valleys, mountains, lightening, thunder, oceans, the moon and the sun etc. all show the awesomeness of God. Noah’s Flood: Genesis 7 For rain to fall continuously till the waters covered the highest mountain peak can only be an act of God. CENTRAL THOUGHT God is concerned about the needs of those who trust and obey him. TEXT: Luke 12:22-31, 8:14, 21:34-36, 1 Peter 5:6-7 INTRODUCTION: Our heavenly father has great care and concern for every aspect of our lives, and has promised to provide all of our needs if we will but trust and obey Him. Life in general is attended with many cares. It was the desire of our Savior to get it across to His disciples and to us that God knows, understands, and is concerned with the legitimate cares of this life. There are not only legitimate cases, but also overburdening cares that we can become so heavily laden with that which will choke out the place that the word of God should have in our hearts and lives. When Jesus said “take no thought for your life”, He meant we should not allow it to be a heavy burden or to be anxious about it. He said this because He could have us to know that the Heavenly Father, the One who created us and brought us into this life really is dutiful in His concern for us to supply every need that we have. This message is surely a needed message now. If we look around we see people who are over burdened with cares and responsibilities of life. Their hearts and minds are so anxious and worried about their financial state that they have no place in them for spiritual blessings or interests in eternal values. They are literally taken up with the fleeting things of this life of vanity. The sad thing is that it will (if not corrected) render them unprepared for the Lord’s coming. What a privilege to humble ourselves under God’s hand of love, and know that we do not have to worry about anything, for God has promised to care for us and see to it that every need will be supplied in due season. LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are:  To know some of the cares of life To know how to handle cares  To know the consequences of being overburdened with cares  To know that God is concerned about our cares   Q1. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CARES OF LIFE? Luke 12:22 Human beings, are always concerned about the necessities of life. The spiritual man do mind the things of the Spirit while the carnal man do mind the things of the flesh. From Luke 12:22, Jesus who knows that man gets worried about life, mentions food, clothing, and welfare of the body. Food is a necessity of life. Without it, man cannot live. One has to labor in order to have enough to eat and to cater for one’s dependents or household. We cannot go about naked and one has to retire to a comfortable shelter after the days labor. The issue of taking care of dependents like children, parents, or brethren form other areas of concern for us. Often we feel that it is the much energy expended in worrying that yields the needed result. For our safety, the scripture says in Psalm 127:1 “Except the Lord keep the city, the watchmen watcheth but in vain”. It is not how much security we have put in place but the Lords doing. He...
