JESUS CHRIST, THE SOLID ROCK, 1/5/2020

  CENTRAL THOUGHT: Building on Christ the solid rock guarantees eternal reward.   HYMN: MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS   TEXT: Matthew 16:13-18; 7:24- 27; 1 Peter 2:4-8 INTRODUCTION: Prophet Isaiah, one of the Old Testament prophets moved by the Spirit of God, revealed over 2000 years ago, God’s plan to lay in Zion a tested stone (solid dependable, reliable), a precious Cornerstone (invaluable) for a sure foundation, and anyone who believes or trusts in Him will never be dismayed. We also find that Apostle Paul while admonishing the Church at Corinth in 1 Corinthians 10:1-10, warned against the dangers and consequences of backsliding and unbelief. He reminded them of the Israelites who all ate spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink from the Spiritual Rock that followed them, which is Christ. God was not pleased with the great majority of them, and they were destroyed in the wilderness. They did not believe God nor did they trust in His salvation. God’s mind for His people has ever been for them to build their faith in Christ. He is the tried, tested, proved, solid dependable, reliable Rock and the only foundation laid by the Sovereign Lord Himself. “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). A building is only as solid as its foundation. The foundation of our lives is Jesus Christ; He is our base, our reason for existence. Everything we are and do, must fit into the pattern provided by Him. Are we building our lives on the only real and lasting foundation, or are we building on a faulty foundation such as wealth, security, success, or fame? Our faith hope and life must be built on Christ the Solid Rock, and His finished work on the cross of Calvary; not on any other principle or anything else.   LESSON OBJECTIVES:  The objectives of this study are: 1.) To know that Jesus Christ is the Solid Rock and sure foundation. 2.) To know how to build upon Christ. 3.) To know that building on any other foundation is futile. 4.) HYMN: THERE’S A LAND THAT IS FAIRER THAN DAY   TEXT: 2 Samuel 12: 15-23; Philippians 1:21-23; 1 Corinthians 15:42-44   INTRODUCTION:  “…for what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeared for a little time, and then vanished away”, James 4:14. The physical life of man is brief. However, death is a universal experience for all of mankind. There’s no individual, whether rich or poor, wise or foolish, great or small that has power to resist in the day of death. Psalm 89:48 says, “What man is he that lived and shall not see death? Shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave?” The appointment with death is compulsory for both the believer in Christ and the non-believers in Him. The Lord Jesus conquered death for the believers and defeated Satan that had enslaved mankind in the fear of death. To the believer death is gain, triumphant, and to be greatly desired. The believer in Christ does not fear death, Psalm 23:4, but has hope in his death, Proverbs 14:32. Whether alive or dead physically, the believer belongs to the Lord, and lives eternally with the Lord. Unfortunately, when the unbeliever dies he/she is lost forever in hell, because his/her inner man is dead in sin and forever separated from God. Sorrow is the portion of the unbeliever after death but the fullness of redemption is the portion of the righteous.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To appropriate how the Bible highlights the finality of death. 2. To see the contrast between the death of the believer-in- Christ and an unbeliever. 3. To appreciate that the believer belongs to the LORD whether alive or dead physically. BIBLE TRUTH 1. HOW DOES SCRIPTURE HIGHLIGHT THE FINALITY OF DEATH? The physical life of man is said to be like a vanishing vapor. “That appeared for a little time, and then vanished away”, James 4:14. Life is brief. Also physical death, which is compared to “sleep in the dust of the earth”, Job 7:21; Daniel 12;2, is a compulsory experience for all living things, Ecclesiastes 3:19. It is “ the house appointed for all living”, Job 30:23. No man, whether rich, poor, wise, foolish, brutish, etc., has power to resist in the day of death, Psalm 49:10, 89:48;Ecclesiastes 8:8. Categorically, it is stated in Hebrews 9:27 that “it is appointed (fixed or decided) for (all) men once to die…” (amplified translation). This appointment is compulsory for both believers in Christ and unbelievers. The LORD GOD foretold of this in Genesis 3:19 with the phrase, “till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” “Thus, man dies immediately the spirit and soul are removed and separated from the body and returned to the giver and maker, Ecclesiastes 12:7; James 2;26. The body then goes back to dust. It was after the Lord Jesus had commended (entrusted for safekeeping) His spirit into the hands of the Father that He gave up the ghost or died, Luke 23:46.   CENTRAL THOUGHT:  The promise of the LORD’s birth was made and fulfilled by God Himself. HYMN: OH, COME ALL YE FAITHFUL TEXT: Luke 2:1-20 INTRODUCTION:  The birth of the LORD Jesus Christ is generally celebrated all over the world. Most countries have set aside December 25th of every year as the day to commemorate His birth. In many countries (especially in the western world, that day is observed as a public holiday. Usually commemoration of the LORD’s birth christened Christmas is done by most people (and sometimes countries) with pomp and pageantry. Homes, streets, shops, etc. are decorated. In the business world, it is also a time of boom. More goods are brought into the market and sales increase. Because of the upsurge in business activities during the period, some critics say that the Christmas celebration has been or is being commercialized. Nevertheless, the fact of the LORD’s birth is a reality. It is fact of the holy scriptures and also a fact of human historical records and writings. The events surrounding His birth were also real. Therefore, while there is joy in celebrating the birth of the LORD, the significance or purpose of that birth must not be ignored. He was born, lived, died, rose again and is alive today and forevermore to deliver man from sin and its consequences. It is common for people generally to celebrate Christmas without pondering in their hearts the significance of the LORD’S birth. Hence the aim of this lesson is to emphasize what the birth of the LORD means to believers and to the entire world. LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: 1. To know that God Himself promised the birth of His Son. 2. To know that the LORD Jesus was born of a virgin. 3. To understand the significance of the virgin birth. 4. To know some of the events surrounding His birth. 5. To understand the purpose of His birth. 6. To know whether it is right or wrong to celebrate Christmas. 7. To know the “best” Christmas an individual can have and celebrate.   BIBLE TRUTH 1. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SCRIPTURAL REFERENCES ON THE BIRTH OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST? The first reference is the Holy scriptures to the birth of the LORD Jesus was in Genesis – the first book of the Bible. God declared in Genesis 3:15 while passing judgment on Satan after the fall of man: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise His heel.” Thus, at the beginning God made it known that someone whose birth will have nothing to do with man but only of the woman will come to earth to redeem man. This promise made in Genesis was repeatedly revealed in scriptures to prophets of God. In blessing his children, Jacob prophesied concerning Judah. “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a law giver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be”, Genesis 49;10. CENTRAL THOUGHT:  Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude to God for all His benefits.   TEXT: Psalm 103:1-6,  Thessalonians 5:18   INTRODUCTION Simply put, thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude or gratefulness to someone especially to God. People have always given and continue to give thanks to God for whom He is and will continue to be. The first thanksgiving recorded in scriptures was that of Cain and Abel but God rejected Cain’s. We are however, not told why God rejected Cain’s offering, but God who knows all secrets and saw something that displeased Him about Cain and his offering. He is not interested in our offerings alone, but in the totality of our being. He is interested in our motive or sincerity in whatever we do, even in thanksgiving. The scriptures enjoin us to give thanks always. However, most congregations have adopted the practice of setting aside one day or more in the year in which their members and in most cases even non-members are expected to thank God apart from the daily expression of thanksgiving to God by the individual. Like the Psalmist says, it is a good thing to thank the Lord, but the worrisome thing about thanksgiving is the way it is done among some today. LESSON OBJECTIVES 1. To appreciate thanksgiving. 1. To examine reasons why we should give thanks. 2. To highlight reasons why we can express our gratitude to God. 3. To understand what’s an acceptable thanksgiving. 4. To appreciate some benefits of thanksgiving.   BIBLE TRUTH 1. WHAT IS THANKSGIVING? Thanks is to express gratitude to God. Reader’s Digest Illustrated Dictionary defines ‘gratitude’ as an appreciative awareness and thankfulness, as for a kindness shown or gift received. Therefore, thanksgiving is the expression of an inward conscious gratitude to God for mercies received. It should be voluntarily expressed for it to be a thanksgiving indeed. Thanksgiving to God comes as a result to deliberate meditation on what God has done in the past. 2. WHY THANKSGIVING? 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Psalm 100, 103:1-6; Luke 17:11-18 Psalm 100 tells us to remember God’s goodness and dependability, and then to worship with thanksgiving and praise. God is our creator, we did not create ourselves. Some people live as though they are the creator and center of their own little world. When we realize that God created us and gave us all we have, our lives will be an embodiment of gratitude to Him. God the Father allowed the Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins and by that we are saved today is enough to give thanks. Just close your eyes for a moment and ponder on the mercies of God, you will have reasons to appreciate His goodness and thank Him. 3. HOW SHOULD WE GIVE THANKS? Exodus 25:1-2; Leviticus 22:29; Revelation 7:10-12; 2 Corinthians 9:6-9; 1 Chronicles 29:6-9 Thanksgiving should be done willingly from the heart. Whatever we do for the worship and service of God, should be done freely, and pleasantly for God loves a cheerful giver, 2 Corinthians 9:7. In the old dispensation this was the standard and it cannot be less today. If people who were under the law willingly offered thanks to God we who are under grace should not do otherwise. SIGNS OF THE END TIMES – WITHOUT NATURAL AFFECTION, DECEMBER 8th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The absence of Natural Affection is indicative of a decaying society awaiting God’s judgement.   TEXT:  2 Timothy 3:1-3; Romans 12:9-12    INTRODUCTION One of the features of the end-time that is gaining prominence both in the world and amongst Christians is the issue of indifference to the plight of others. Simply put, the vice of “neighborliness” is far replacing the virtue of “neighborliness” as taught by the Lord Jesus Christ, Luke 10:29-37. The center point of the gospel is love…. “For God so loved the world (of sinners) that He gave his only begotten son…”, John 3:16. Concerns for mankind, demonstration of compassion and the provision of relief to those in distress characterized the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Since man is the only creature that God made after His very image and likeness, He expects that the activities of every Christian should revolve around the love of God expressed to man.  We therefore cannot love God if we hate the man (or our neighbor) that was created after His image and likeness, 1 John 4:21. End-time events show that most men and women are getting less concerned about the plight of their fellow human beings, be they Christians or unbelievers. Nothing is big, valuable, or precious enough to take the place of the godly affection for mankind. Natural affection may entail some sacrifice, pains or deprivations but such sacrifices for the man Christ came and died for, will not lose its reward!     LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand what “without Natural Affection” means. To know how this sign manifests today. To know the end of those fulfilling this sign. To appreciate the features of natural affection.   BIBLE TRUTH EXPLAIN WHAT IT MEANS TO BE “WITHOUT NATURAL AFFECTION”. An attribute of God is, kindness.  To be kind is to be sympathetic to the plight and conditions or our neighbors. Man was originally created after the likeness of God, Genesis 1:26.  It follows that since love is the nature of God, 1 John 4:8, this good attribute of God should naturally be shared by man who was created after His image and likeness. To be “naturally affectionate” is to be kind, considerate and practically concerned with the problems of others.  The story of the good Samaritan told by our Lord Jesus Christ, Luke 10:30-37, paints a good picture of a show of human kindness to one’s neighbor. This is expected to be the nature of the redeemed man. To be without natural affection is to be “blind” or to develop “thick skin” against the feelings of others.  “Lack of natural affection” is synonymous with wickedness.   Q2. DISCUSS SOCIETAL HABITS/ACTS THAT ARE CONSIDERED TO BE WITHOUT NATURAL AFFECTION. A. Occultism: Occultism is closely associated with wicked practices of its members against non-members. Members upon initiation are subjected to such dehumanizing experiences as in: drainage of their blood for ritualistic purposes. Members of different occultic organizations are found to engage in fatal ‘battles’ that sometimes lead to brutal murders and incapacitations. B. Murder/Assassination: The spate of murder and the activity of hired killers have grown at an alarming rate in recent times.  These killings are carried out with such brutality and over mundane issues as to falsely suggest that human lives...
