  CENTRAL THOUGHT All forms of unholy living will attract God’s judgement.     TEXT:  2 Timothy 3:2   INTRODUCTION A closer look at the events in our society today will reveal how the devil is mounting pressure on people to lower moral standards and holy living so as to distance them from God. The worrisome aspect of the growth of sinful living is that Satan’s deception is not restricted to the unbelieving larger society alone.  Some churches and their leaders are getting increasingly infested by this “end time bug” of “it doesn’t matter” mentality, which condones and compromises unholy, sinful, lifestyles.  It is indeed increasingly becoming difficult to distinguish some Christians from unbelievers as a result of similarities in their lifestyles. The aim of Satan in this regard is very clear.  He knows fully well that this time (reign), is running out and that the second coming of Christ is closer than ever.  Satan would therefore want to keep people from meeting God’s standards through unholy living, and for believers, he would work relentlessly to de-emphasize the place and importance of holiness. However, holiness remains and all-time standard that God demands of his children as a condition for pleasing Him and for gaining access to His kingdom, 1 Peter 1:15-16.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand the meaning of holy and unholy. To know practical situations that promote unholy living. To know the consequences of unholy living. BIBLE TRUTH WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE TERMS “UNHOLY AND HOLY LIVING”? “Holy living” is a wholesome life-style (in words and deeds) that conforms with God’s standard of decency, moderation, and devoid of any form of corruption, defilement or ungodliness.  It is a lifestyle that shuns sin, conforming with God’s nature and character of holiness. Holy living consists of whatever thoughts, words or deeds that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of good report, virtuous and praise worthy, Philippians 4:8.  It follows from the above that a life of holiness is a life lived in love as it also has all the attributes of love, 1 Corinthians 13:4. One therefore wonders about the folly of some Christians who regard holy living as a preserve of some particular church denominations only.  Holiness demanding as it may seem, remains both an old time (Leviticus 11:44), and present-day standard (1 Peter 1:16), that commands universal acceptance and practice for the Christian faith.  It is an unwavering requirement for pleasing God and “making” heaven.  Without holiness, it is impossible to see God, Hebrews 12:14. “Unholy living” on the other hand, remains thoughts, words and conducts that are carnal, sinful and unacceptable to God.  There is no middle course between holy and unholy living, as God does not only regard the direct and indirect sinful deeds and words as unholy but equally condemns the encouragement, appreciation, condonement and approval of people who practice them. The standards for holiness can be obtained from no other source – (be they persons, church denominations or culture) other than God’s word.   CENTRAL THOUGHT May it not be that someone else does what the Lord has assigned for you because of your failure and wickedness.   TEXT: Matthew 21: 33-44, Romans 9:3-5, 25-33     READING TEXT:  Matthew 21: 33-44     INTRODUCTION: Parables, which were common – place stories, provided our Lord Jesus Christ an effective vehicle of communicating the deep truths of the kingdom of God.  This particular one of the Householder and husbandmen was no exception.  It reveals God’s eternal plan of salvation for mankind, namely that through Israel the Gospel of Christ be made known to the world.  With their reflection of the Messiah, the gentiles – a people who were not regarded as one – have, by faith, become children of Abraham and instruments for the propagation of the Gospel.  This parable could be of more significance to our generation than it was to the audience (scribes, Pharisees, commoners, etc.) that received it from the Lord.  Israel got carries away with her rich religious heritage, thinking it could substitute for the Messiah.  That same deception has overtaken some of us today.  We think the kingdom of God is our exclusive right because of either our position in church or our financial contribution to the church, or some other worldly standard, and fail to bring forth the fruits of true repentance.  We can be certain that the fate of these wicked husbandmen will be ours if we fail to repent.  Though the program of God for the human race is carried out by men and women who are yielded to Him, it is not subject to any man neither can it be held to ransom by any single individual.  Whenever we erroneously think we have become indispensable in the vineyard of the Lord, then the Lord raises someone from obscurity to further His plan.  Elijah was taught this humbling truth when he thought he was the only one left who had not bowed down to Baal, not knowing that the Lord had reserved 7,000 faithful individuals, 1 Kings 19:9-18.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know those represented by the householder and husbandmen. To know the purpose of the parable. To know how to properly take care of that commitment to us. To know the consequences of rejecting the Messiah.       BIBLE TRUTH   WHO ARE THE HOUSEHOLDER AND HUSBANDMEN? A householder is one who owns a property which he either takes charge of or leases to others for a period of time and for an agreed return.  The returns can be in the form of cash (monetary returns), crop harvest, or in kind.  In this parable being considered, the house holder is a land owner who planted a vineyard, walled it round, dug a wine press, and built a watchtower in it and rented the vineyard to some farmers, and went away to another country. Husbandmen, are in general, stewards to whom are entrusting some responsibilities by a householder.  They usually enter into an agreement with the householder, and the agreement specifies their obligations in terms of what, how and when returns are to be made.  In this parable, the husbandmen are farmers who rented the vineyard, and promised to send a part of the harvest to the householder.  Two...

THE PARABLE OF JESUS CHRIST – THE WORKERS IN THE VINEYARD, NOVEMBER 10th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The promise of eternal life is for all believers of all ages.   TEXT: Matthew 20:1-16   INTRODUCTION The word parable comes from the Greek “parabole” meaning a placing beside.  It is therefore the pacing of one subject by another as an illustration of spiritual things by familiar earthly objects or incidents that brings the stories nearer their audience. Our Lord Jesus Christ who is the greatest teacher this world has ever known, often spoke to the people in parables in the Gospel, Matthew 13:10-13.  He made use of them to “veil” the truth from those who were not willing to acknowledge the truth, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4.  Those who really desired to know would not rest till they have found out the meaning, Isaiah 6:9-10. The parable of the workers in the vineyard was prompted by Peter’s question on the reward for those of them who had forsaken all and followed Christ.  The parable shows us that God in His sovereignty is debtor to no man, and that many who being last, may, with God’s blessings and grace outstrip those who were first called in knowledge, grace and spiritual usefulness.  This calls for humanity and reverential fear lest we should ourselves be found hypocrites at last.  God will continue to engage laborers till the very close of the age but the gift of eternal life is to all no matter the time one comes into the fold.     LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know what this parable implies. To know that the Lord keeps covenants. To know that God rewards His laborers. To appreciate vital lessons from the parable.     BIBLE TRUTH   WHY WAS THIS PARABLE GIVEN BY JESUS? Parables are stories involving physical objects or circumstances used by Jesus to teach the hidden truths about God and His ways.  This parable of the workers in the vineyard, shows how believers are called and engaged in the Lord’s work of the kingdom.  From the parable, it is clear that there is a reward for all workers who endure to the end no matter the time of engagement.  People could be opportune to start in the ministry at an early age, others could serve longer while others could be called almost at the end of their life time or age.  It is clear that the end result will be eternal life in Jesus Christ. Christ is not interested in the death of a sinner.  This is the basis of engaging laborers even up to the eleventh hour when he found them idle.  Christ, the righteous judge will reward every believer in line with His word, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved, and thy house”, Acts 16:31. No one may be given over either because of age for being too deep in sin, for Jesus could still pick him up at the eleventh hour.  Any positive responses to the call “come follow Me” will be rewarded.   COMMENT ON WHETHER OR NOT THE PARABLE SUGGESTS EQUAL REWARDS FOR ALL CHRISTIANS. 1 CORINTHIANS 3:8-15, REVELATION 22:12 From what is revealed, all laborers did what was expected of them.  Here, it is not a matter of quantity or quality.  The reward is the same for same quality of work.  We...

CENTRAL THOUGHT Obedience to the word of God brings fruitfulness to the believer in all aspects of life.   TEXT:  Matthew 13:3-9, 18-23   INTRODUCTION Parables are simple stories familiar to the audience designed to illustrate issues or situations in order to teach some wisdom, moral or spiritual truth, pass instruction or rebuke and effect correction appropriately.  Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, was fond of parables in expressing spiritual truths while on earth. The plan and purpose of God in sending His only begotten Son into the world was and is to provide eternal salvation for all.  Hence, the Gospel message is given to all mankind.  It is therefore that the word of God should have a positive effect on every individual, this should manifest itself in fruit-bearing.  However, the effect of the word of God in the lives of the hearers depends greatly on how prepared their hearts have been to receive the word of God and how committed they are to what they have heard. In the parable of the sower, the Lord used the effect of the different types of soil on the seed sown to illustrate the response given by the different categories of hearers to the word of God.  Just like the seed is sown freely and the ground (soil) on which it falls determines the extent of the growth and development of the germinated seed, so the word of God is sown freely into people’s lives but the individual determines his/her own response to the word of God and thus the profitability of the word in their life. It is important to emphasize that it is the personal application and appropriation of God’s word by an individual that brings the results or blessings intended by the word.  A noncompliance with the word of God results in an unfruitful life.  Every hearer of God’s word is, therefore, encouraged to allow the received word have a place in their life for fruitfulness.     LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know the meaning of parables. To know the different categories of hearers of God’s word. To identify what could prevent people from being doers of the word of God. To know the dangers of not paying adequate attention to the word of God.   BIBLE TRUTH WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF PARABLES IN CHRIST’S MINISTRY? In His earthly ministry, our Lord Jesus Christ, was fond of parables to express spiritual truth to His audience.  Through these parables, He used what His audience was familiar with to drive home spiritual truth concerning issues or situations.  On one of these occasions, His disciples requested to know why He was fond of parables in teaching His audience.  He responded saying, “because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given”, Matthew 13:11.  It was in order to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah that says, “By hearing, ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive”, Matthew 13:14.
