THE CRUCIFIED LIFE, August 18th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The life of a Christian is a reflection of the degree of his yieldedness to Christ.   HYMN:  ALL TO JESUS I SURRENDER   TEXT: Romans 6:1-23, 1 Peter 4:1-2, Galatians 2:20   INTRODUCTION: The Word of God concludes that every man is a sinner. As a result, man is condemned to receive the wage for his sin. It does not matter how “righteously” man tries to live as he grows up, he is still expected to pay for the sin which was inherited by him from his adamic lineage. The wages of sin according to the scriptures is death (Romans 6:23). However, the provision made by God for the remission of sin is the shedding of blood. Man could not make this sacrifice because iniquity could not possibly pay for iniquity. God in His mercy, not willing that any should perish send His dear righteous Son Jesus to the earth to die for mankind. For as Paul says to the Romans, “But God commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). This death of Christ on the cross according to F.J. Dake, showed that there was no salvation by the law or any other means for that matter. Since by that death, we were really crucified with Him (being our death that was substituted), it follows that we now live his own life which was exchanged for ours. The life we now live in the flesh is one of faith in Christ who loved us and made it possible for us to live without condemnation. It is the resurrected life of Christ that we now possess. To the Christian, therefore, living the crucified life is a daily walk that reflects the character of Christ while depending on His Spirit for empowerment, guidance leadership and victory.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To explain the attributes characterized with the crucified life. To understand how the crucified life can be sustained. To know the rewards of living a crucified life.   Q1. WHAT IS MEANT BY THE CRUCIFIED LIFE? Literally, to crucify means to put to death. One that is dead is not subject to sensitivity or any other form of responsiveness. Similarly, to the Christian the crucified life is one which through the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit has lost its attraction for the things of this world. This is made possible through the appropriation of the vicarious death of our Lord Jesus Christ unto oneself. Just as the case of the dead, where there is no response to stimulus, so also in the crucified life the passion for sin is dead. In Romans 6:6, Paul declares that our old self was crucified with Christ in order to render our sinful nature powerless, and to break sins hold over our lives. In Galatians 2:20, Paul also use the word crucified, but notice that it is also in past tense, indicating that the work has already been done 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”.   CENTRAL THOUGHT Forgetting those things which are behind, let us advance for the things which are ahead.   HYMN:  STAND UP STAND UP FOR JESUS   TEXT: Philippians 3:1-21   INTRODUCTION The Christian life is a race. But many people today think that Christians are people who have achieved holiness, people that are beyond foulness. Indeed, children of God are beyond reproach in the sense that their sins are not only forgotten, yet they may err! The Christian is holy. He is clean and void of contamination. However, the Christian does not make a practice of sin (1 John 2:15-17; 3:2-10). While salvation is the work of the Holy Spirit at the time that the sinner accepts the Lord Jesus Christ, subsequent growth by the individual child of God is definitely not sudden. And like natural growth, one may have stunted growth or normal growth, depending on several factors. And particular experiences in the process of maturity differ. The child born to a family learns from how to breathe, to how to breastfeed, to how to drink other milk, solid foods and then eventually how to feed themselves. Finally, he learns how to fend for himself and for his family; a learning curve that should be normal for every child and it is applicable to the child of God also. During this leaning period, blunders are committed, not as right or by intention. And though these are sins, he does not intend to do them. Each time he looks back, he sees a few blunders mixed with some good as he grows. The good encourages him to try harder while the blunders discourage him. If he keeps brooding over the past he may not make progress in growth and maturity. It is a healthy piece of advice to learn to forget the past, especially if it does not encourage a better tomorrow. The Apostle Paul wrote that he learned that lesson, not only to put the bad past behind him, but to also avoid spending time celebrating the good past, losing valuable time for a better today. A bad past may be a sinful past or a sinful mistake. A good past may be a pleasant deed for the Lord in the past. What is definitely true is that we can always improve. The child of God is someone set on the tight road to perfection; he is not yet perfect, but he is moving unto perfection. No matter how much we mature in the Lord, there is a lot more room for “forward movement”. To press forward, for the Christian means to leave yesterday and strive for excellence today! It means thanking God for strength for yesterday and believing Him for an even finer tomorrow. It means to reach for greater achievements for the Lord on a daily basis. It does not matter whether yesterday was bright or dark; it is not related to how much recognition you got for yesterday’s exploits or how much “thanks” we received when the other good deed was done. What matters is for the Lord to receive more and more glory by my life every day; for the Kingdom of God to increase by me more and more every day! CENTRAL THOUGHT An individual is not greater than his thoughts.   HYMN:  TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE   TEXT: Proverbs 4:20-23, Romans 12:1-3     INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that many spiritual battles and intrigues occur at the thought level within the human mind. The devil also recognizes this, and does whatever he can to ensure that he gains the upper hand at this level. He realizes that when battles are won at the thought level, it will only be a matter of time for them to manifest in the physical. When the Devil told Eve, “Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden?” (Genesis 3:1), it was an assault on the mind of Eve. The wavering response of Eve brought about the next and final assault, “You shall not surely die.” (Genesis 3:4). To this final assault, Eve had no reply. Her thought processes had been overtaken by the devil, and the physical act of disobedience followed naturally. We need to avail ourselves of the divinely-arrayed weapons at our disposal to “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5). These weapons give us victory at the thought level. When the Devil comes to us telling us that we are non-achievers, we can respond confidently that, “We can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth us.” You may never know the power of your thought until you allow God’s word to renew your mind. Pessimism will give way to divinely-wrought optimism, and failure will give way to success. What you thought you could never do comes within reach. A good example is the write-ups of these lessons. It was because a number of individuals with virtually no training in written English thought that they could produce these lessons, it is then that these manuals became a reality. You can be all that God wants you to be if you allow His word to saturate your thoughts.     LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know how to guard your thoughts. To know how thoughts, originate. To know God’s thoughts towards believers. To know how to overcome at the thought realm. To know how to use our thoughts positively.     BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT IS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF THOUGHTS? Our thoughts are imaginations, intentions, and purposes that are conceived in our minds. Thoughts are considered as processes which take place within our minds and have profound influence on our general perception and outlook on life. Our thoughts play an important role in molding our person. “For as he in thinketh in his hear, so is he”. (Proverbs 23:7). It is because of the great influence that our thoughts have over our lives that we are undertaking this study on guarding our thoughts. When we allow the Holy Spirit to provide a filter that gets rid of negative thoughts and sucks in positive ones, then we will observe the positive results in our relationships, dispositions, and outlook to life. MARKS OF TRUE BELIEVERS, July 28th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The marks of true believers identify them before God and man.     TEXT: Mathew 7:13-23     INTRODUCTION A person who has a firm conviction in the reality of the finished work of salvation by the Lord Jesus Christ, who is born again, is a believer. And there are marks of genuine believer; conspicuous sings that show that he is a believer. The use of the qualifier, true, is to distinguish actual believers from “false brethren.” At creation, the Lord said that all living things should bear after their kinds (Genesis 1:24-26). This law is seen in nature even now. Animals bear their kind, trees bear fruit with seeds that produce the kind of tree that bore them. Man, also bears man. The Lord, in explaining the concept of the new birth to Nicodemus, said that flesh gives birth to flesh and spirit the spirit. This again shows the original law at creation. By this then, (John 3: 5-8), it is obvious that a child of God takes after God, just like a natural man after his father. A true believer is a child of God and bears the characters of his father. These are distinguishing features that make him known by his brothers and different from the unbelievers. These are like birthmarks and not necessarily matters to strive for. For instance, a child’s surname identifies him or her with a family; his physique is a mark of his decent. By these features the child is identifiable by his people as well as others. In this lesson, we shall be tracing the exact marks of true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ such as know feature, which distinguish children of God in the first place. At the instance of new birth, what marks the believer as God’s own? And in effect what is the fruit of the new birth?   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know who a true believer is. To show that true believers are distinguished from other human beings. To appreciate the cost of being a believer.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHO IS A TRUE BELIEVER? Jesus followers were not all believer. Today, in the different local churches and denominations spread all over the world, not all members are true believers. A church member is not necessarily a believer. Holding a post, or title does not make one a believer either, even if people think one is. In fact, being good does not make on a believer, even if better in works than some known believers. A believer is one who has received the Lord Jesus Christ and who has been given the power to be son of God (John 1:12). He is one who professes and exhibits absolute belief in, and owes total allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ. He is one who is zealous for and about the Lord so much so that the Spirit of the Lord has possession of him. He is the one that is led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14).   Q2. MAINTAINING SOUND DOCTRINE, July 21st, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The Christian that is out of tune with sound doctrine falls in tune with the doctrines of the devil.   HYMN: SING THEM OVER AGAIN TO ME.   TEXT: 1 Timothy 4:1-16   INTRODUCTION As we approach the close of age, there are already several manifestations which indicate a subtle but steady and deadly person of the truths of God’s word. It is to be expected however, because this phenomenon is clearly an issue of biblical prophecy. (1 Tim. 4: 1-3) The irony of this situation is that prophesies are supposed to be “signposts” of warning to believers against possible dangers ahead, but most either refuse to read the “signpost” or fail to reconcile them to the times they live in. Many reasons could be adduced for this development, but the Bible in 2 Tim. 4:3 says that the time will come when men will not put up with the sound of the doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. The question is, why would they suddenly become inclined to their own desires instead of God’s desire? It can only be inferred that just as nature does not allow vacuum, so the absence of the good makes possible the entrance of the bad, even in spiritual matters. Any wonder therefore why the word of God admonishes in Titus 2:1 thus, “You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine. 1 Tim. 4:16 further admonishes, “Watch your life and doctrine closely.  Persevere in them, because if you, you will save both yourself and hearers. This study discusses how to maintain sound doctrine to the saving of individual souls.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To know what constitutes sound doctrine. To know how sound doctrine could be adulterated. To understand how to maintain sound doctrine. To appreciate individual roles in maintaining sound doctrine. To know that there are consequences for not maintaining sound doctrine.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT IS SOUND DOCTRINE? If biblical doctrine remains a body of teachings or instructions or truth contained in the Bible, it follows that a sound doctrine must be one which is a true reflection of the intents and purposes of God who is the giver of the doctrine. Sound doctrine must be one which is unadulterated or uncorrupted. It must not be anything like it, but exactly it. In Matt. 7:17-20, Jesus taught that “every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit”. In similar vein, it is only a sound doctrine that has the capability of nurturing a sound Christian. By sound doctrine to the various categories of people in his church for the wholesome development of the entire congregation (Titus 2:1-10) Maintenance of uniformity, continuity and purity of the Christian faith can only be achieved when sound doctrine is strictly adhered to. In John 15:3 Christ says ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
