THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE, JUNE 9th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT Godly foundation guarantees the sanctity of marriage.   TEXT: Genesis 2:21-25; Ephesians 5:21-33   INTRODUCTION Marriage was instituted by God in the Garden of Eden where God placed the first man He made- Adam.  God also provided a “help meet” for Adam, Genesis 2:18, whom Adam called woman, “the bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh”.  The man and woman were called husband and wife. God originally intended that marriage should be an estate of sanctity (saintliness, godliness, holiness).  Hence marriage is described as Holy matrimony. This study focuses on some factors that have polluted the marriage institution, and attempt to offer possible solutions.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand what obedience is. Know what King Saul was asked to do, whether he obeyed God and the lessons for King Saul’s experience. Mention some specific areas that God demands obedience from man. Identify other authorities we are to obey and discuss how we are to demonstrate obedience to them. Know the consequences of disobedience, and appreciate the benefits of obedience.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT FOUNDATION CAN WE LAY FOR THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE? Marriage is a union of a man and a woman who live together throughout their life time having all things in common, being in one accord in every area of their lives.  The individuals should realize that it is a creation of God; therefore no other foundation can guarantee its sanctity except the Word of God.  In other words, sanctity of marriage can only be sustained through the fear of God that emanate from the knowledge of His word, and deliberate determination to obey the same.  Psalm 127: 1 says, “Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders in wasted”.  A Christian should not marry an unbeliever.  God’s desire is that marriage should be honorable in all things, Hebrews 13:4.  Giving honor to a marriage will require the utmost in Christian conviction and only a monogamous type of marriage is more likely to provide the atmosphere for the exhibition of the honor God expects in marriage. Sanctity in marriage should be Bible based. In grateful acknowledgement of all that God has done for us, Christians must consecrate themselves to God, so as to live a life of holiness in the fear of God, even in marriage. Individuals in a marriage relationship must live honestly and commit themselves to honoring and glorifying God in their marriage.   Q2. DISCUSS HOW THE FOLLOWING FACTORS HAVE ADVERSELY AFFECTED MARRIAGE. Economic Problems: It is now a common phenomenon for husband and wife to leave home in the morning and come back at night, in the name of trying to make ends meet.  Children in such a family are normally left either to themselves or in the hands of house helps, who may not care so much about the children’s welfare.  Economic pressures can adversely affect marriage if not properly handled. Improper Child Upbringing, Proverbs 22:6: Improper child upbringing has had its toll on marriage.  Children who become deviant constitute problems to their families and society.  Children who would make positive contributions to the stability of a marriage need to be taught the word of God and guided to obey the instructions therein.  When this is properly done, such children bring joy and peace to the family. CENTRAL THOUGHT Our obedience to God should be motivated by love, reverential fear and faith.   TEXT: 1 Samuel 15:1-23   INTRODUCTION The word obedient means dutifully complying with the commands, orders, or instructions of one in authority. Obedience is the act or practice of being obedient. Everyone is pleased when he/she gives instructions and they are timely carried out properly. Every parent desires that their children comply with this directives and such compliance is acknowledged appreciated, and sometimes attracts reward, which acts of disobedience are discountenanced and most times attract punishment. When parents instruct children on what to do, they are not happy  when they only obey a portion of the commands. Parents expect their children to obey all that we tell them. So also, God Almighty, whose image and likeness we are, demands absolute obedience from us. Our obedience to God should not be a forced one but should be  spontaneously offered. For every obedience, God is pleased and we are rewarded; and there is also a deep feeling satisfaction in the inner man that we have pleased God despite all odds. It is in our best interest to obey God. God wants us keep his commands , while reminding us that obeying His commands is reasonable and beneficial at all times. Obedience involves not mere knowledge, but the practical demonstration of our submission to God and other authorities. It should proceed from the heart  (Romans 6:17). There is no substitute for obedience. God does not owe us any explanation or reason for everything He asks us to do. You do not need to understand the command before you obey. Obedience to God teaches us that you will never understand some of His commands until you obey them first. Obedience unlocks understanding. Apostle Peter emphasized our obligation to obey God rather than men (Acts 4:19), 5:29). This study will emphasize the importance of obedience and consequences of disobedience.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand what obedience is. To be obedient is to dutifully comply with commands, orders, or instructions of one in authority while obedience is the act or practice of being obedient. Scripturally, obedience means total submission to God’s authority and command. Our obedience to God should be not be forced but should be willingly and spontaneously offered. The above scriptures are on servants’ obedience to their master and the attendant blessedness for obedience. We are servants and God is our Master, we are to obey Him, whether it is convenient or not. Obedience is also based on knowledge because you can only obey instructions you know that are given to you. CENTRAL THOUGHT We become more like the Lord Jesus if we follow His lifestyle.   TEXT: Matthew 6:5-8; John 4:31-34; 1Peter 2:19-25.   INTROCUCTION It is very imperative for us as the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ to follow in His steps. Through His lifestyle and teachings, the Lord Jesus Christ set for us a standard of life which if strictly adhered to, we shall live victoriously here on earth. It should be our greatest desire therefore to follow in his steps on a daily basis no matter the situation we find ourselves. He should be our role model and example. We are admonished in the scriptures to look into Jesus ‘the Author and the finisher of our faith’ (Hebrews 12:2). Because Chris is God, He left for us a perfect example to follow. As we follow in His steps, we are able to fulfill God’s mandate for our lives. By doing so, we will be able to shine as light in this dark world of sin.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To discuss what it means to “follow in His steps” To understand the implications of following in His steps. To outline some of his footsteps/ way of life that we are commanded to follow.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE WORD “STEPS”? According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, ‘step’ can be said to mean among others, “to lift and put one’s foot, in order to walk in the directions or the place specified”. It could also mean to put one’s foot on the foot print of another who had earlier walked through that spot. In this context however, the word ‘steps’ means following and living our lives patterned after the life of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at all times, in all areas, circumstances and situations. This implies that as followers of Christ we must be ready to pass through even difficult situations just as Christ did during His life here on earth. However, we have this confidence  that just as Christ was victorious in it all; we shall also come out victoriously if we walk in His steps. “Nay in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37).   Q2. DISCUSS WHAT I MEANS TO ‘FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS’ AND THE IMPLICATION OF THAT INSTRUCTION (Matthew 17:5; Luke 9:23). To ‘follow in His steps’ means to emulate and pattern our lives as believers in conformity with the lifestyle of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ. As we follow in His steps , we will be fulfilling the Lord’s expectation and will make us victorious and successful in all areas of life. The implication of that instruction is that the Lord Jesus Christ will testify about us just as the Father testified about him in Mathew 17:5 “ This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” Paul realized this fact when he wrote to the Colossians, “That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful unto every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10). CENTRAL THOUGHT Those that are really the blessed are those that live and walk in obedience to the word of God.   TEXT: Psalm 1   INTRODUCTION Everybody wants God’s blessing in all aspects of life. The lord God who created all things is capable of meeting everyone’s heart desire, whether spiritual or material needs. However, tremendous blessings always result from living in accordance with the word of God. When we live by the word, the word becomes what it says. Those who diligently obey God’s word are healthy, fruit-bearing trees with strong roots. God promises to watch over them. (Jer.17:7-8). God’s word in the believer will achieve His purposes for that believer. We will share in His promise and blessing as contained in His word if we obey and live by them.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To explain what it means to be blessed. To state what anyone who’s desirous of God’s blessings should abstain from. To discover the state of man who is blessed of God.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE BLESSED? PS.32:1; 40:4; 106:3; 112:1; 119:1-2. People often times think that blessing only means abundant supply of material things by God. It is far more than that, looking at the above scriptures. Ps. 32:1 states that “blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered”. God settled the issue of sin by sending His only begotten son (Jesus Christ) to come and die for our sin. It was the death of Christ that brought forgiveness and pardon of man’s sin. Therefore, any individual that is born again should count himself blessed. Ps 40:4 also states “Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies”. Today people because of fear of the unknown put their trust in the flesh rather than God. Such people are unwise because they can never enjoy the blessings that lie in trusting God. But a Christian who puts his trust in God is blessed. (Jer.17:7-8). The reason is that our God is the trustworthy God. With Him there is no disappointment. The people of the world are not reliable, but God remains our rock that can never fail. In addition, Ps. 106:3 reveals that “Blessed are those who keep justice and he who does righteousness at all times”. Those who do not pervert judgement and those who live righteously are blessed. We live in the society where it seems justice no longer counts, people tell lies to have their way. A child of God must always desire to live right and do what is right. Also, a man is blessed when he fears the Lord(Ps.112:1). The fear of God delivers one from evil. Any child of God who lives in sin has no fear of God and deprives himself of the blessing of God. Ps.119:1-2 says- “Blessed are the undefiled in the way…” The “undefiled” are those that are living uprightly. They are careful in whatever they do in order not to soil their hands or stain their garments. Joseph (Gen 39) was a typical example. His master’s wife tried to lure him to sin but he resisted the temptation. This earned him God’s approval.   Q2....

CENTRAL THOUGHT Believers as vessels of honor should serve diligently.   TEXT: 2Timothy 2:19-26   INTRODUCTION Our God is a holy God and cannot look on iniquity (Habakkuk 1:13). Many may be willing to offer services to God but only those who are cleansed in his site it will be used by Him. God’s standard remains the same. Even if we decide to set a standard far below God’s expectation, He will never lower His standard. If we must serve him acceptably therefore, we must present our bodies as a living sacrifice Holy and acceptable onto Him, which is our reasonable service (Roman  12:1). We must possess our “vessels” in holiness and righteousness unto Him. To be a vessel onto honor means to be free from sin and anything that contaminates, to be consecrated to the service of God and walk worthy of Him until all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, an increasing in the knowledge of God (Colossians 1: 10). Necessity is laid on us by God to purge ourselves from every form of filthiness so that we can be honorable vessels He can make use of, to reach forth to the world. In this lesson, we shall be examining what it means to be honorable vessels and how we can become vessels onto honor meant for the Master’s use.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To explaining the statement that the foundation of God standeth sure. To know how one can become an honorable vessel. To identify various vessels that are found in the house of God. To identify things, one needs to purge one’s self of. To identify the character and responsibilities of a true minister as a vessel unto honor.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. EXPLAIN THE STATEMENT: “THE FOUNDATION OF GOD STANDETH SURE” (2Timothy 2:19) This statement has been made to reassure believers that’s some false teachers might attempt to introduce heresies and errors into the church in a bid to deceive and subvert the hearers, yet this cannot change our God or make his promise of no effect. Some false teachers distort the truth, some dilute it, and some simply delete it by saying it no longer applies. But no matter how many people follow liars, God’s truth never changes, is never shaken, and will never fade. God’s foundation stands firm. The foundation of God’s word stands sure. This implies that the doctrine of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ cannot be shaken, it stands firm and has stood test of time. His purposes can never be thwarted or defeated. His standard remains the same through the ages. In addition, the Lord knows those who are his and he is able to keep them. He is able to save them to the uttermost that come on to God by Him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them (Hebrew 7: 25).   Q2. HOW CAN ONE BECOME AN HONORABLE VESSEL? God’s demand and desire is that every believer should be an honorable vessel. It is only in this condition that we can qualify for the Master’s use.
