REBUILDING THE BROKEN WALLS, MAY 5Th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT Let every man take heed how he builds. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid which is Jesus Christ.   TEXT: Nehemiah 2; 4:1-9   INTRODUCTION The word “RE” means again in a different way i.e. doing something again. While “building” is to erect, to construct a structure e.g. house, bridge, fence, etc. The word building connotes the art or process of erecting structures; it also involves increasing and strengthening a structure. The word broken mean something that is Infirm, crushed, thrown into disorder, altered in direction, shattered in health, Spirit, estate or position, while wall is an erection of brick, stone or security to enclose a space, its fortification, defense, security, barriers and protection. In the context of this topic-rebuilding the broken walls would mean restoring the foundational values, which over the years have been eroded or lost, due to our shift in emphasis. The resultant effect of having a broken wall is too grave for anyone to toy with. This topic applies appropriately to this era of Christendom as the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is imminent.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To examine Nehemiah’s reaction to the news concerning Jerusalem. To highlight “broken walls” in Christendom today and how we should react to them. To discuss the strategies used by the enemies to hinder the rebuilding of broken walls. To identify the strategies, we can put up to rebuild the broken walls. Discuss the blessings in rebuilding the broken walls.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT WAS NEHEMIAH’S REACTION TO THE NEWS CONCERNING JERUSALEM? (Nehemiah 1:2-7) The Jews, as prophesied, were in captivity and while there, most of them had assured Babylonia as their home, and were contented ass slaves and servants. While in captivity Nehemiah found himself in the palace, i.e. close to the authority. Despite the comfort that the Palace offered, he had a yearning and compassion for his home and was not in any way derail or overtaken by the comfort of the Palace. To show his overwhelming passion, he asked after the state of his beloved city Jerusalem when the opportunity showed up. When Nehemiah Learnt that his people were in great affliction and the walls of Jerusalem were in ruins, he mourned and rose to the challenge. In his reaction, he wept, mourned, fasted and prayed; he reminded God that he was a covenant-keeping God. He prayed for God’s mercies and was persistent in his prayers (twice- day and night). He also confessed not only his personal sins, but that of his nation. His deep sorrow for his wasted land was hidden. He knew the right request to make and was not self-centered, but was for the fulfilment of God’s purpose. He later got the King’s authority to go to Jerusalem to rebuild the broken walls and he restored the people spiritually. It must be noted that Nehemiah knew God as his God, based on personal encounter (Neh. 1: 8c). Another thing that could be learnt from the experience of Nehemiah is that, he kept and meditated on what God had put in his heart: (Neh. 1:12). TEXT: Colossians 1:20, Colossians 2:15, Romans 6:6   INTRODUCTION Crucifixion on across was a gruesome way of killing criminals and slaves, Device by the Romans. It entailed a slow and painful death watched by all who cared. It was a shameful way of dying men to serve as a deterrent to other criminals and usually left a stigma on the family of the crucified. It was on one of such crosses that the Lord Jesus died and over the centuries, the cross has emerged as a symbol of Christianity;  not loyalty or affluence, frugality or poverty.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To see how Christ death on the cross Reconciled men to God. Understand how Christ’s death on the cross affected the devil’s power over man. To understand what it means for the ” old self” to be crucified.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. HOW DID CHRIST RECONCILE MEN TO GOD BY THE CROSS? The Scriptures clearly teach that all men have sinned and the wages of sin is death: eternal separation from God. On the cross, our sins were put on Him and He experience spiritual death when God forsook Him hence He cried “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me?” He tasted death for everyone (Hebrews 2:9) i.e. He died physically. He cried”… into Thy hands I commend my Spirit” and gave up the ghost (Luke 23: 46). When He paid the price for sin, peace was established between God and man and numerous blessings have followed this: our sins are forgiven when we repent and accept His finish work on the cross; we become God’s children and our names are written in the book of life. We become free and have continues access to God as long as we keep from sin and are encouraged to “approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” Hebrew 4:16 (NIV). All these have been made possible because of the cross of Jesus.   Q2. HOW DID CHRIT’S DEATH ON THE CROSS AFFECT THE DEVIL? In Luke 1: 67-75, Zechariah spoke about the implications of Christ’s coming under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Among others it included “salvation from our enemies and from the hand of those who hate us… to enable us to serve Him without fear in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days”. The devil holds the world in bondage through this year of death. The fear of lack, failure, physical death, disease etc., makes people get involved in all kinds of the evil to avert their fears. Much of present-day religious activities is driven by fear. The fear of witches drives many from one breakthrough seminar to the next anointing service or deliverance program but the Scripture declare, “Since the children had flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death–that is the devil and free those who all their lives where held in slavery by the fear of death” (Hebrew 2: 14-15). CENTRAL THOUGHT The resurrection of Christ is the basis for the glorious hope of the saints.   TEXT: MATT. 28:1-10; 1COR. 15:1-20.   INTRODUCTION Christ’s death, burial and resurrection are so significant in Christian faith that the gospel will not be complete without them. ‘But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen… Our proclaiming is in vain… we are found false witnesses of God… your faith is in vain, ye are yet in in your sins and we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead and become the first fruits of them that slept’1Cor. 15:13-20. The evidence of this truth is the empty tomb, the witnesses of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit who is still bearing witness to all who believe the scriptures that God cannot lie. This study shall focus on the significance of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus and the evidence to prove them.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To consider the significance of the death and burial of Jesus Christ To appreciate the evidence that Christ is risen To understand the benefits of Christ’s resurrection to the believer To highlight God’s expectation from the believer at this Easter.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1 DISCUSS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DEATH AND BURIAL OF JESUS CHRIST. Adam and Eve (the first man and woman) transgressed God’s instruction which led to sin in the sight of God and brought disobedience into the world that everyone born of a woman were born into sin, as a result of this sin, mankind became sinners and alienated from God with the consequence of eternal death. Before passing judgement on them, God in His infinite mercy made provision that the ‘seed of the woman will bruise the head of the serpent” Gen. 3:5. The Virgin Birth, ministry, suffering, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ were prophesied by most for the prophets in the Old Testament before He finally came and fulfilled the will of God to reconcile man to God. The Lord Jesus Christ bore our sin in His own body on the tree, that: a. We, being dead to sin, should live unto righteousness. b. By His death, the power of sin is destroyed in our lives, that is why we can repent and live holy lives. c. CENTRAL THOUGHT The peace with God through Christ’s suffering.   Text: Matthew 27:27-54   INTODUCTION The word Passion as used Galatians 5:24 can be defined as strong feeling, intense desire or enthusiasm towards something.  It is also referred to as affection and lust of the flesh.  Paul in his letter said “those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh and its passion and desires”.  However, when Passion is used in relation to Jesus Christ, it refers to his suffering and death, in which case it is prefixed by the word “The”, The Passion (of Jesus Christ).  In the Christian world, this period is referred to as the “The Passion Week”. It starts from “Palm Sunday” when Jesus triumphantly entered into Jerusalem as a king, through to “Good Friday”, when he was crucified.  In our study, we shall examine some of the agonies and pains experienced by our Lord Jesus during “The Passion Week”.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To Critically examine Christ suffering. To understand why He needed to go through all the sufferings. To understand how we are to reciprocate the sacrifice of Christ for us. To examine Christ seven last statements on the cross. To identify some of the miraculous events that accompanied the death of Christ.   BIBLE TRUTH   Q1. Read and briefly comment on the following pains suffered by our Lord Jesus Christ. False witness against Him.  Matthew 26:59-61 Two witnesses who claim to testify against Christ came forward and said, “This man said I am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days”.  This was false.  Jesus said, “Destroy this templeand in three days I will raise it up”.  However, He never referred to the infrastructural Temple of God; rather He was referring to His Body, His death and resurrection, which the so-called witnesses failed to understand.  In ignorance, they testified falsely against Christ.  This must have really caused Jesus a great deal of pain. Smitten and spat on.  Mark 14:65, 15:19: John 18:22 It was a public humiliation of an innocent man.  There was no basis for such treatment, but for His obedience to the command of His Father.  He neither complained nor reacted in any form. Given gall and vinegar.  John 19:28-29: Matthew 27:34, 48 It is unimaginable to think of offering bitter or sour liquid to a man hungry and thirsty of water.  What a mockery! Hands and feet pierced. John 19:37; 20:25-27 Jesus was nailed to the cross alive.  This was physical injury with great pain.  The excruciating pain is better imagined than experienced. Mocked while dying.  Matthew 27:39-40 While in great pain and distress, deserted by His disciples, needing encouragement and comfort.  Even His kinsmen mocked Him. His side was pierced. John 19:34 The only way the soldiers who crucified Him thought right to ascertain whether He was still alive while hanging on the cross, was to pierce His side with a spear.  What an act of merciless cruelty! Flogged with a whip.  Matthew 27:26 Jesus was flogged, not with just an ordinary whip, but one with thorns which made visible marks of injury all over His body. He was stripped and worn a crown of thorns.  Matthew 27:28-29 The soldiers forced the “crown” on His head that pierced His head and blood gushed out while stripped, while they shouted...

CENTRAL THOUGHT The Lord expects believers to be united.   TEXT: Psalm 133: 1-3, John 17:21-23, Ephesians 4:1-6.   INTRODUCTION The Lord Jesus Christ prayed for the unity of his disciples as we have read in John 17. The unity that Jesus prayed for was not organizational unity but spiritual unity based on believing in Him. Amos 3:3 asked; can two walk together except  they be agreed? This question is so pertinent for us to understand the importance of brethren walking in unity. If we have known and experienced the love of the Father and the fellowship of Christ, we ought to obey the injunction of our Lord that we love one another as He has loved us. It is only by loving one another that we can be united as the body of Christ, each of us carry out our functions to complement each other. What Jesus has in mind was not ordinary fellowship but one that endeavors to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. It is spiritual unity of heart, purpose, mind, and will in those who are fully devoted to Him.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand the meaning of unity. To comprehend how to work together in unity. To discuss the cause of disunity. To know the benefits of unity.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY THE WORD UNITY? Unity is the state of being undivided, unbroken or oneness. Unity may also refer to an institution that brings different people together under one roof. In the context of our study, unity is the state of oneness, agreement in the body of Christ, in which all believers are members. We all must know that the Lord Jesus expects us to be united, that is why He took time to pray in John 17, that believers may be one even as He and the Father are one (verse 20). This means that all believers are to be like-minded, striving to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The death of Jesus Christ brought together different people, differs in culture and upbringing, into one body. Paul by the Holy Spirit describe to church as a human body with different parts but all working together in unity to accomplish the same goal.   Q2. HOW DO WE WALK IN UNITY? Eph 4:1-6; 1 Cor Unity is a great virtue, when present in any group of people, for it strengthens them. The Bible instructs that we walk in unity. In Ephesians 4: 1-2, we are enjoined to walk in unity by manifesting the following: Lowliness: The dictionary defines lowliness as low rank, humble. The humble mind does easily walk in agreement with others. He does not necessarily insist on his own. He seeks those things that will enhance the realization of the common goal of the body. Meekness: This is defined as submissiveness. A heart that is submissive can always, at all times live in agreement and oneness with other people. He is prepared to take up any responsibility given to him. He is not argumentative nor disobeys authorities.
