BELIEVING GOD FOR DIVINE PROTECTION, March 3rd, 2019

  CENTRAL THOUGHT The great and mighty God guarantees protection for all who put their trust in him.   TEXT: Psalm 91   INTRODUCTION The fact that man generally lives under fear today cannot be denied.  There is the fear and anxiety over what to eat and where to lay one’s head.  There is a hidden or real fear of attack by thieves, robbers and assassins.  In addition, some live under the fear of a possible marriage collapse etc.  Man is therefore engulfed in a feeling of insecurity and so needs protection. Hence the quest for protection by man drives him into all sorts of practices including divination; membership of prayer houses, secret societies and social clubs; recitation of certain phrases/incantations etc.  Unfortunately, human experience shows that real protection is not found in any of these practices. God is the only One who guarantees full protection to any man who depends on Him. The LORD is more than able to do this because His is the Almighty, Omniscient and Omnipresent God. The word of God declares “for the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on the behalf of them whose heart is perfect towards Him.”, 2 Chronicles 16:9.  Rather than running here and there looking for protection where there is none, man should return to the true source of protection and in faith begin to appropriate and enjoy Divine protection.     LESSON OBJECTIVESThe objectives of this study are: To know what divine protection is. To identify some situations in which protection is needed. To appreciate that God has the ability to protect His people. To understand that God’s protection covers every area of our lives. To examine how to appropriate the promise of divine protection.       BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT IS DIVINE PROTECTION? To protect as defined in the dictionary means to keep somebody/something safe from harm, injury, attack, etc.  It also implies defending somebody or something. The issue of protection is viewed seriously by individuals, institutions and governments.  This explains why individuals build houses and “wall” themselves in with high fences; institutions pay security agents to defend their staff and properties and governments budget huge sums for security.  In addition, some individuals, institutions and governments employ unorthodox means to ensure adequate protection.   The irony in all these is that personal and general human experience shows that none of these give adequate protection.  The only true source of protection remains God and Him alone.  Divine protection therefore entails the action(s) of God in defending and protecting His children (believers) from all attacks of the enemy (the devil) whether such attacks are physical, spiritual or otherwise.  Devine protection also includes prevention of proposed attacks by the enemy while it is even on the enemy’s drawing board or planning table.  While such thoughts/plans are being conceived by the enemy, God sees them and immediately thwarts the plans thus ensuring that His child is adequately protected.  Therefore, the realm of God’s protection is not only in the physical but also in the spiritual.   Q2.   Central Thought: God’s unlimited resources are for His children today.   TEXT: 1Kings 17:1-16; 19:5-8   INTRODUCTION: A miracle could simply be defined as a supernatural act, intervention of God to the course of nature. Miracles do not follow natural laws and tendency rather they operate at much higher levels. Therefore, a miraculous provision meets the various needs of his people. Miracles are not magical Acts. Whereas magical acts are tricks of the enemy with the intent to confound the heart of depraved men, miracles are acts of God designed to assist men beyond the limits of the human resources and abilities. Miracle always happens for a purpose. To take an individual Beyond his human limitations so that the name of the Lord is glorified. Miracles are never designed to bring to Limelight the vehicle by which the Miracles come but to direct the hearts of men and women to the Lord- the very source of all miracles. Some individuals claim miracles are over because the circumstances that gave rise to miraculous events in biblical days are non-existent today. To infer that Miracles cannot take place today is to deny the limitation of man and acknowledge that man does not have need for God today. We must acknowledge the finiteness of every human being an all human inventions institution, and the finitude of God whose resources are Unlimited. As we begin to break down the boundaries we have set for God as we enter into the realm of knowing God’s Unlimited provisions.   LESSON OBJECTIVESThe objectives of this study are: To understand how God miraculously said Elijah throughout the period of droughts in Israel. To challenge us to depend on God for our daily sustenance. To understand what it takes to receive from God.     BIBLE TRUTH Q1. DISCUSS HOW ELIJAH WAS MIRACULOUSLY BY RAVENS? (1KINGS.17:2-6) Immediately after prophet Elijah had declared that the heavens would no longer give rain in Israel, God asked him to move to Cherith brook. In this isolated place he will be fed by ravens which God had commanded to supply food to him two times a day after which he would drink water from the brook. A raven by nature is a kind of bird, big in size, is always scared of the presence of man and popularly known to be the carriers of bad omen. That God decided to use ravens to feed Elijah was therefore significant and a miracle. Though some Bible scholars have tried to equate ravens with “Arabian merchant” on the ground that they have the same consonants in the Hebrew word. This cannot be correct as both words even in Hebrew language were never used interchangeably throughout the scripture. They mean two different things. It is only man’s way of rationalizing these supernatural events. The question has always been asked of who was baking the cake and frying the meat the ravens made available to Elijah. Without doubt, God was the source. He is the same God who provided manna for the Israelites to eat in the wilderness for forty years. (Exo. 16: 14-21; Num. 11: 7-9). CENTRAL THOUGHT Following God’s direction brings His plans and purpose to fulfillment in one’s life.     Text: Proverbs 3:5-7: John 14:26   INTRODUCTION God has a plan for every child of His.  Jeremiah 29:11 states, “For I know the thoughts that I think towards you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end”.  In order to fit into God’s plans for our lives, it is very important that we follow His directions. Following God’s direction involves believing and obeying His word, depending and trusting absolutely upon him, knowing that He will never lead us astray. The implication of following His direction is that we should be ready to accept His will in all situations knowing that His overall purpose is to make all things work together for our good.  His plans and purpose are the best for us.  The believer who willingly follows God’s direction enjoys His peace, joy, etc. as he daily waits upon Him to accomplish His purpose in his/her life.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: Making us understand what it means to follow God’s direction. Revealing to us some areas in which we need Divine direction. Teaching us the characteristics of Divine direction. Helping us know God’s provision for Divine direction Revealing to us the blessing of following God’s direction   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FOLLOW GODS DIRECTION? In life generally, there are some avenues for seeking direction especially in the matters that are physical and have no eternal value. For example, a stranger arriving a city may trace or find his way through the city by following the direction provided in the city map. Also, parents may be able to direct their children on issues based on their previous experiences. There are moments where human beings depend on their senses to provide direction. Yet there are some who resort to occult mediums for spiritual directions. However, because of the imperfections of man, relying on self for direction does fail and, in some situations, bring disastrous consequences. The Lord God Almighty clearly condemns any form of resort to occult mediums for directions (Deut. 18:9-14). God is the only One who can provide true and absolutely dependable direction through life. Following His directions means we are willing to pattern our lives after His own way. It implies that where there is a “conflict” between what we want or desire to do and what He says, desires or wants us to do, we are willing to submit to His own way. In following Gods direction, we should be willing to obey His word and make His will our own will.   Q2. WHAT ARE THE AREAS IN WHICH WE NEED GODS DIRECTION? Gods direction is needed in all directions of our life. There are many decisions we make over which we need Gods guidance. Believers need to make decisions as regards choice of career, life partner, where to live, the type of car to purchase, purchase of land, building projects etc. As simple as these matters appear, mistakes made in terms of wrong decisions may be disastrous. CENTRAL THOUGHT The believer who inquire from the Lord enjoys the benefit of being guided by God.   TEXT: 1 Samuel 23:1-12, 30:7-8; Numbers 27:1-7; Joshua 9:3-15   INTRODUCTION God has made provision for His children to be properly guided in making choices, decisions and taking necessary actions.  However, it is the believer who seeks such guidance that will enjoy the benefits of being guided by the Lord.  It is therefore needful for the children of God to always inquire from Him.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: Examining what hinders believers from inquiring from the Lord. Considering some examples of people who inquired from the Lord. Learning from the consequences of not inquiring from the Lord. Appropriating the benefits of inquiring from the Lord.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. What are some of the things that hinder us from inquiring from the Lord? Some of the things that hinder the believer from seeking GOD’s counsel (or inquiring from HIM) on specific matters include: Love of the world, John 2:15-17. When a believer has hidden love in his heart for the things of the world, the tendency will be for such a believer to do things to please and satisfy himself.  Such a mindset will hinder the believer from inquiring from GOD for fear that GOD may give him directions contrary to his personal ways, ideas or methods of achieving results. Greed and covetousness. Greed and covetousness are also a hindrance to our ability to inquire from the LORD or seek His counsel on the issues of life.  In some situations, even when such counsel is sought, the desire for gain may rob us of actualizing the benefits of such counsel.  This was the situation with Balaam, Numbers 22; Revelation 2:14. Selfishness, selfish interests & pride of life. In some situations, the desire to promote oneself hinders believers from inquiring from GOD as regards what to do when faced with life situations. The desire to be recognized above others makes people employ means that are not scriptural to achieve their set objectives.  Some believers while pursuing political offices which they perceive will bring them to the “limelight” ignore biblical principles provided they achieve their aim.  They do not bother to inquire from GOD or allow HIM work out HIS will in the matter.  They claim that they do not want to leave things to chance.  No wonder many in such situations have made shipwrecks of their faith and Christian commitment.  Clearly, they were propelled by the “pride of life”, 1 John 2:16. Sin. A believer who is inclined to ungodly habits or makes a practice of sin will certainly be hindered from inquiring from the LORD or seeking GOD’s counsel on life matters. Other. The class is free to mention and discuss some other factors that hinder believers from inquiring from the LORD. In concluding this section, it is needful to state that the only way to overcome these hindrances is for the believer to live a life of total surrender to the LORD JESUS CHRIST; recognizing that while enjoying the benefits of being a son to the FATHER through the LORD JESUS, he must also accept the responsibilities of being a slave to the MASTER.   Q2.
