Christ our Lord, December 23rd, 2018

Central Thought: Every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord to the glory of God the Father.   Hymn: “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name” Text: Ephesians 1:20-23; Philippians 2:9-11     We understand from Scriptures that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Word that was made flesh; who was with God in the beginning and by whom all things were made, John 1:1-3 and 14. The Lordship of Christ therefore denotes His authority, ownership of the universe, sovereignty and rulership over all creation.  He is described in the Scripture as the LORD of all flesh.  Thus, all creation is subject to Him.  However, the Lord seeks a personal relationship with every human being – a relationship acknowledging Him in thought, word and deed as SAVIOR, LORD and MASTER.  Every human being is encouraged to enter into this relationship.  We must enthrone Him as LORD, for that is what indeed He is.  We must not only know Christ as Savior, we must also know Him as Lord and Master.  As someone has rightly said, Christ must not only be present in our lives, He must also be prominent and He must not only be prominent, He must also be pre-eminent.  As members of His body, we must acknowledge that we belong to and are responsible to Christ our Lord, Savior and Master.     Lesson Objectives: To know who Christ is. To acknowledge the Lordship of Christ over all things and in all situations. To exhort believers to a life of holiness and absolute surrender and obedience to Christ. To encourage believers to acknowledge Christ as Lord and Master in their daily living.   Discuss the Lordship of Christ over creation. Christ is Lord over all creation: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made.  And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father), full of grace and truth”, John 1:3 and 14.  These scriptures reveal to us that the Lord Jesus Christ was active in creation.  He is part of the everlasting Holy Trinity.  The Bible further tells us that by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether they be throne, or dominions or principalities or power: all things were created by Him and for Him.  He is before all things and by Him all things consist, Colossians 1:16-17.  Thus, we find that the entire universe is His creation and therefore subject to Him.  He exercises full authority and rulership over all creation.  The seas, winds, storms, etc. are all subject to Him, Luke 8:22-25.  All human governments and authorities are ordained by Him and subject to Him and the king’s heart is in His hands, Romans 13:1; Proverbs 21:1.  He is indeed Lord over the entire universe. Christ is Lord over all principalities and power: All principalities, power and the rulers of the darkness of this world are subject to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Use of the Tongue, December 16th, 2018

  Central Thought: Wholesome use of the tongue is a measure of spiritual maturity.   Hymn: “Take My Life and Let It BE” Text: James 3:1-13; Psalm 34:12-13     The tongue is a very important part of the body, situated in the mouth. It is a very small fleshy muscular organ that facilitates speech among other things.  When properly used, it brings blessings to the speaker and the hearer but when used wrongly, it can result in death, destruction, bitter envying and strife, clamor and wars, etc. However, it is important to note that what comes out of a man depends on what he harbors in his heart because the Bible says, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”, Luke 6:45. If the heart of an individual is filled with the word of God, the Holy spirit will undue him with godly wisdom that will enable him to control his tongue and “speak with grace”; have “sound speech that cannot be condemned”, Colossians 4:6; Titus 2:8.  “If a man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able to bridle his whole body”, James 3:2.  Wrong use of the tongue can cause a lot of problems to an individual in the home, neighborhood, and community and even in a local church. The Bible says: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof”, Proverbs 18:21. For this reason, every believer is encouraged to make wholesome use of the tongue so as to have graceful speech seasoned with salt, Colossians 4:6; in order to avoid bitterness, clamor and in-fighting in a local church, James 4:1:2; Ephesians 4:31.     Lesson Objectives: To know what the tongue is. To appreciate what the Bible teaches concerning the use of the tongue. To know how to exercise control over the tongue. To know the consequences of wrong use of the tongue. To appreciate the benefits of proper use of the tongue.   What is the tongue? The tongue is that fleshy muscular organ in the mouth that can be used for tasting, licking, swallowing and speaking. Although the tongue is a small member of the body, it can cause an enormous irreparable damage.  If not properly used, it is full of wickedness, which can poison every other member of the body. In James 3:5-6, the Holy Bible describes the tongue as a little member of the body, which makes great boasts. It is also described as “a fire”, “a world of iniquity” that can defile the whole body, and set on fire the course of nature and “it is set on fire of hell”, James 3:6.  This implies that though the tongue is a little member of the body, it can destroy the life of an individual, cause bitterness among brethren, wars and fighting among nations, or even cause confusion and strife in a local church if not carefully guarded. However, the tongue can only say what is in the heart. It mirrors the heart.  When the heart is richly endowed with the word of God and Spirit-filled, the wisdom from above will help the believer to tame his or her tongue and have “sound speech that cannot be condemned.”  Every believer is therefore encouraged...

Central Thought: True worship leads to righteous living and righteous living enriches congregational worship.   Hymn: “Oh Worship the King” Text: Isaiah 6:1-5; John 4:19-34; 2 Chronicles 5:1-14     God Almighty, the Creator of the universe and everything therein and His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who redeemed mankind from death, destruction, deserve our praise, thanks, honor, adoration and worship. We can do nothing without Him because He is our source. After creating the heavens and the earth, God created man in His image and likeness to live in comfort and enjoy His creation and reciprocate by serving and worshiping Him all the days of his life. When man sinned and became separated from God, He sent His only begotten Son to redeem him from death and destruction, so that he (man) can continue to live in comfort and enjoyment.  For these reasons every living soul ought to serve and worship the Almighty God for His goodness, loving kindness and mercy.  True worship arises from a heart that is fully or totally yielded unto God, which begins with the acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Savior and is reflected in total obedience to the will of the Almighty. As believers we must acknowledge that we are privileged to be partakers of God’s divine grace, as made available in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In response to His divine grace, we must approach Him reverently, in faith and humility, yielding our Spirit, Soul and body unto Him without any reservation.  The believer must also live in constant consciousness of the constant presence of the Almighty.  This will enable him or her to faithfully live for Him and not soil his or her life with sin. Conclusively, it is not enough to worship but there is also need for the believer to stand in awe of Him, recognizing that in spite of His glory and majesty, He condescended to fellowship with His creatures.     Lesson Objectives: To explain the meaning of worship. To identify who to worship. To know how to worship. To understand what is meant by making a joyful noise unto the Lord. To know the hindrances to worship.   What is worship? In Great Illustrated Dictionary, ‘worship’ is defined as the reverent love and allegiance accorded a deity; ardent devotion; adoration. The Christians worship the Almighty God who made the heavens and earth, and everything therein. Through God we live, move and have our being.  By God, our redemption was made possible through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son who told us not to fear since He holds the keys of hell and death.  Hence with gladness we solicit for God’s divine presence through worship as He is our comforter, defender, provider, healer, etc.  Also, God promised that He would be with us always even till the end of the world. In worship, we make a joyful noise unto the Lord with singing, praises and thanksgiving, proclaiming His good and mighty works. As revealed in the “Lord prayer” in Matthew 6:9-10, we hallow God’s name through worship as done in heaven.  The angels and the twenty four elders do not rest day and night in heaven, glorifying, honoring and thanking God, Revelation 4:9-11.  Worship is total surrender to God of our...

Central Thought: Take heed, and beware of covetousness.   Hymn: “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Else” Text: 1 Kings 21:1-16; Luke 12:13-15; 2 Timothy 3:1-2     This present world system is class conscious. Everyone is driven by various desires, to get the most of the world either legitimately or illegitimately.  While this is the spirit of the age, 2 Timothy 3:1-3, the Christian is warned against covetousness, and is expected to live their life daily faithfully trusting the Lord.  The sin of covetousness has permeated every facet of our society, government/offices, business/professions and religious circles.  The Scriptures are replete with people who fell for this and the dare consequences that befell them.  Hence every believer should strive to resist and overcome the spirit of covetousness.     Lesson Objectives: To explain the word “covetousness”. To identify the things people covet. To give example of characters in the Bible who were covetous and how they ended. To identify the consequences of living a covetous life Discuss how the present day believer can overcome the spirit of covetousness.   What is covetousness? The word “covetousness” is form the verb “to covet” and the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary explains it to mean “to want something very much, especially something that belongs to someone else”. Thus, covetousness means having a strong desire for the things that other people have.  In the Scriptures, this attitude of the heart is labelled as sin. It is the tenth commandment in the Mosaic Law, Exodus 20:17.  It is a display of evil heart desires, Psalm 10:3.   What are the things people covet? From Exodus 20:17, it is clear that virtually every earthly resources has the propensity to be coveted by man, hence, man is warned against it. They include neighbor’s houses, wives, domestic servants and animals, their land, etc., Deuteronomy 5:21.  In our modern work, things like cars, clothes, position, electronics, and businesses can be coveted.  However natural admiration of something good, if not allowed to agitate the heart, does not translate to covetousness.  The sin of covetousness is evident when someone deliberately decides to dispossess another person of his rightful belonging without his/her consent, 1 Kings 21:17-19.   Why is a covetous spirit on the rise today? 2 Timothy 3:1-2 The upsurge in the operation of the spirit of covetousness is consistent with end-time prophecy. Satan is fighting his last battle to lead man to hell even, through the subtle sin of covetousness.  The spirit of greed sets in when one loses heavenly focus.  Some believers today are not living with eternity in view.  Thus, to get the most of life, they go into inordinate accumulation of wealth, Philippians 3:17-20.  The change in societal value in our world today tends to promote a covetous spirt among men.  Success in life is not measured by the amount of riches that people have, irrespective of how the wealth was made.  The statement of the Lord Jesus remains an incontrovertible truth, “for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of things which he possesses”, Luke 12:15b.   Using the following examples, discuss the consequences of covetousness. -Lot and his wife: In Genesis13:10-13, it was covetousness that made Lot to choose the well-watered plain of Jordan first before his uncle, Abraham, who was far older. Central Thought: Tithe is commanded by God for Himself, and is holy to the Lord.     Hymn: “Sowing In the Morning” Text: Malachi 3:8-12; Proverbs 3:9-10       Tithing is a law that began during the time of Moses, Leviticus 27:30-34; Deuteronomy 14:22. The Levites, as commanded by God, used some of the tithes because they could not possess land of their own, Numbers 18:20-21.  However, during Malachi’s day the people were not paying tithes, so the Levites went to work to earn a living, thereby neglecting their God-given responsibilities of caring for the temple, Nehemiah 13:10-12, and for the service of worship. Tithe is reserved by God, for Himself, it is holy unto God, Leviticus 27:30. Tithe is an expression of God’s sovereignty over man, Deuteronomy 8:18.  Everything we have is form God; so when we refuse to return to Him a part of what He has given, we rob Him.  Do you selfishly keep 100% of what God gives, or do you return at least 10% towards helping to advance God’s kingdom?  It is important therefore that we do not ignore God’s command to give tithe of our income to His temple, as the people of Malachi’s day did and were cursed.  Recall that Abraham gave to Melchizedek, “the priest of the Most High God” tithes of all, Genesis 14:18-20.     Lesson Objectives: To define tithe. To examine the purpose of tithing. To know the consequences of not paying Tithes. To appreciate the blessings in tithing.       What is the Biblical history of tithing? -Tithing before the Law. Tithing was practiced 430 years before the Law of Moses: In Genesis 14:20, Abraham gave Melchizedech, king of Salem “tithes of all”. Also in Genesis 28:22, Jacob promised to give God the tenth if He spared his life and returned him safely to his father’s house. -Tithing under the Law. Tithing was commanded under the law, as we read in Leviticus 27:30, “tithe of the land, whether of the seed or of the fruit of the trees…”. In 2 Chronicles 31:4-6, Hezekiah and the children of Israel paid tithe.  Also we read in Nehemiah 13:10-12 that Nehemiah restored tithing as one of his steps towards revival in the land.  In Malachi 3:10 the people were commanded to “bring all the tithes…” -Tithing in the New Testament. In the New Testament, references were made to the act of tithing in the Old Testament: and it was commanded, Hebrews 7:1-10; Luke 11:42.  The Lord Jesus Christ, while teaching on the kingdom of Heaven, did not condemn tithing in His rebuke of the Scribes and Pharisees for omitting “weightier matters of the law”, Matthew 23:23.  Apostle Paul also taught that God ordained support of ministers in the Kingdom work, 1 Corinthians 9:7-14; Galatians 6:6; Hebrews 7:5.     What are the purposes of tithing? Under the Law of Moses we gain insight to some of the purposes of tithing. From Numbers 18:21-24-26; Nehemiah 10:37, 12:44; Deuteronomy 14:27-29, we understand that because of the work which the Levites (the Priesthood) do, the tithe is their inheritance.  Also through tithing there will be “meat” in God’s house, Malachi 3:10, bringing support to the work of God in general.  Furthermore, tithing honors God, Proverbs 3:9-10.  Thus, from the tithes, God...
