Praising the Lord, Part 2 – July 29, 2017

Central Thought: Praises to God bring down His blessings.   Text: Psalm 100, 150:1-6   Introduction: To praise is to say or write good things about someone.  It is to express thanks, love or respect for God.  Praise commends, glorifies, exalts, celebrates, laud, worships or magnifies, especially by the attrition of perfections.  God has awesome attributes which impact the lives of men on earth.  He is the creator of man, who sent man into the world to emancipate and bear fruits.  He watches over man and influences his life in diverse ways such as in protection, provision, promotion, preservation and salvation.  He gives grace to those who please Him and these are those who honor Him with praises, Psalm 50:23.  For man to get the best from God, he must praise Him, as a way of appreciating Him for His goodness.  Even then, God has shown that He created man for His own glory, Isaiah 43:7.  We should not forget that God is in everything that affects us to ensure that it ends in our good, Romans 8:28.  Man is obligated, therefore, to habitually praise God.  It is no surprise that David requested God to open his lips so that he could praise Him more and more, Psalm 51:15.  Praising God should be expressive and demonstrable, which should easily evolve from how much God means to us.   Lesson Objectives: To know how we should praise God To emphasize when to praise the Lord. To examine instances from Scriptures of the Power of praises.   Bible Truth: 1. How should we praise God? Psalm 103:1-5 We should praise God expressively, honestly, faithfully and wholly. We must consider His personality and special works for us, which automatically draws soulful praise to Him.  That was what Moses did for the victory at the Red sea and so was prompted to sign that “there is no god like the LORD GOD”, Exodus 15:11.  It was so with Hannah such that, among others, she volunteered, “There is none holy like the LORD, there is none besides Him, and there is no rock like our God”, 1 Samuel 2:2.  When we are gripped in such euphoric state, we let go of all things, including our problems, and then give quality praises to God.  Indeed, if you prize your God highly; if you hold Him in high admiration, you can properly praise Him.  We can do this praise in the following ways: -Soulfully, Psalm 103:1: Praise should be activated form the spirit of the inner being of the individual. -Wholeheartedly, Psalm 9:1: Praise should be done completely; sincerely; enthusiastically, and with determination.  It should not be done doubtfully or in uncertainty. -Gladly, 2 Chronicles 29:30:  Praises should be done with Joy and gladness so that it can arouse the interest of the One being praised. -Thankfully, Psalm 147:7: Praises should be given to God with thanksgiving.  We must show gratitude by reflecting on the very purpose of the praise – the work that God did. -With Musical Instruments, Psalm 150:3-5:  We should accompany our praises with musical instruments; even our palms, to make it joyful. To know where we can praise God.   Bible Truth: Why should we praise God? Praise is delightful and shows appreciation and approval.  It is motivational and impresses for further favorable action.  For instance, “when a man’s ways pleases the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him”, Proverbs 16:7.  Again, in the pleasure of God, He has bequeathed His Kingdom to His faithful ones, Luke 12:32.  Because Jesus Christ always did what was pleasing to God, so could confess that the Father ever stood by Him, John 8:29.  We should expect God to be motivated to do good to us if we please Him through praise.  Specifically, we praise God for the following reasons: -He Created and Established Us, Psalm 148:5-6:  Without Him we would not be alive nor would we be what we are today. -For His Attributes:  His majesty and glory, Exodus 15:11 -His Omniscience, Isaiah 46:10:  He declared the end from the beginning; and Ephesians 1:4, He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world. -His Exclusiveness, Isaiah 45:5-7:  He is unique.  There is no one like Him, nor can any act like Him.  He thus cannot give His glory to any other or His praise to graven images, Isaiah 42:8.  No one can restrain God. -For His Goodness and Love, Psalm 107:15-16:  He satisfies man with His love. -For His faithfulness, 1 Chronicles 16:15-17:  He is faithful to His covenant.  When He promises, He perfects it, 1 Thessalonians 5:24.  He does not lie nor does He change His mind on any issue, Numbers 23:19. -For His Mighty Works, Deuteronomy 8:10; Luke 19:37:  His works means favor and goodness to man. -For His Pleasure in His People, Psalm 149:4:  He delights in His people such that it gives Him...

Central Thought: Success in all of life’s endeavors depends on the Holy Spirit.   Text: Exodus 31:1-5; Galatians 5:22-25; John 14:16, 26; Romans 8:14-16, 26; Colossians 3:22-25: Ephesians 6:5-9   Introduction: There is a tendency among believers to think that the baptism of the Holy Spirit provides enablement only in terms of “spiritual matters” and that He has nothing to do with the routine issues of life. This is because of the prevalent stratification of our lives into spiritual aspects usually perceived as involving activities in church; Bible studies, prayer meetings, ministry etc.  In this erroneous thinking, life in school or work or in the community is classified as earthly, not spiritual.  The result of such thinking is that individuals strive to adhere to the norms and “culture” expected during the religious aspects of life and follow the prevalent traditional or professional culture in the environment as regards to life at home, school or work.  The Lord’s thinking is evident from Colossians3:23-25 where Paul, in addressing slaves with regards to daily duties to their earthly masters states “…And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance for you serve the Lord Christ.  But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done and there is no partiality.”  The Lord wans us to please Him in every area of life and the same enablement, the Holy Spirit, is available to help us do this.  We need Him in every are of life.  The Lord Jesus introduced the Holy Spirit as “another Counselor/Comforter”, who will be with us and in us.  In this study, we will examine how the Holy Spirit helps us to achieve success in life.     Lesson Objectives: To understand the place of the fruit of the Holy Spirit in everyday living. To understand the areas of life the leading of the Holy Spirit can be experienced. To understand how gifts of the Holy Spirit can help the believer in his chosen vocation or business. To understand how the Holy Spirit can help the believer in creating wealth.   How does the fruit of the Holy Spirit help us to succeed in daily living? Galatians5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.  Against such there is no law.” The fruit of the Spirit marks us out in the community, school or work place.  The Spirit produces these nine-fold character traits that are found in the nature of Christ, in the believer for excellence. -Love:  Love for our employers and fellow employees, clients or school mates will ensure that we wish and treat them well.  It will ensure that we are not self-centered but put the interest of others before ours.  It will enable us to go the extra mile where necessary.  We will devote ourselves to our jobs and be committed to the service for which we are paid.  There is no employer who would not love this and therefore reward it.  More importantly, the believer does his job heartily because he does it unto the Lord, not unto men and knows that he will receive a reward form Him, Colossians 3:23-25. -Faithfulness: Daniel 6:3-4.  The...

Central Thought: The Holy Spirit is God’s empowerment for successful ministry.   Text: Isaiah 11:2-5; Mark 16:15-18; Acts 1:8, 13:1-3; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11, 27:31: Ephesians 4:11-16: 1 Peter 4:10-11   Introduction: The purpose of the church on earth is twofold:  to get men saved and build them into the stature of Christ (Mark 16:15-18; Acts 1:8: Ephesians 4:11-13).  The specific roles that members of the body of Christ are called to perform relate to either or both of these functions.  For the role of bringing men into the fold, all believers are called to preach the gospel wherever they live or work, Acts 1:8.  Mobilization for this is one of the primary functions of the local church who must ensure that they do not fail the Lord in this area.  There are diverse gifts to specific people in the Church by the Holy Spirit.  These perform the leading roles in these specific areas.  They are the Apostles, Prophets, Evangelist, Pastors and Teachers “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the Ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”, Ephesians 4:11-12. In all of the aforementioned, the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role.  In this study, we examine this with a view to gaining insight that will make us individually successful in ministry, 1 Corinthians 12:27-31, 14:26; 1 Peter 4:10-11.   Lesson Objectives: To understand the role of the Holy Spirit in assigning believers to specific areas of service. To understand how the believer can know the area of service he is called to. To know how the Holy Spirit equips the believer for service. To understand what we must do to avail ourselves maximally of the help of the Holy Spirit.   What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the choice of area of service of the believer in Christ? It is the Holy Spirit that determines what role each believer plays in the body of Christ and equips him with the appropriate gifts for it. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 – “There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving but the same Lord is served.  There are different abilities to perform service but the same God gives ability to all for their particular service.  The Spirit’s presence is shown in each person for the good of all.” The Scriptures emphasize that every believer has a role or function assigned.  We must each prayerfully identify our roles and gifts and function in them.  Leaders of the local church are not at liberty to assign whoever they like to specific roles but with fear must seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance to understand the specific gifts the Holy Spirit has given to specific individuals and assign them to appropriate roles.  The experience of the local church leaders and Barnabas and Saul in Acts 13:1-3 is very instructive. “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them’. This was not the will or preference of men being expressed but that of the Lord of the harvest. Central Thought: The Holy Spirit enables the believer to succeed. Hymn: Spirit Divine! Attend our prayers.   Text: Isaiah 61:1-3; Mark1:7; Acts 1:8, 2:4, 10:38 Last week, it was stated that God purposed that the Holy Spirit, play a vital role in the life of the believer. This was prophesied in Joel 2:28-29 and came to pass in Acts 2:4. While the Lord Jesus as god in human flesh, during His sojourn on earth, emptied Himself of His divine powers He relied on the Holy Spirit for guidance and empowerment, Philippians 2:57. He did this as an example for us. He showed that a man relying on the Holy Spirit can please God. Before His crucifixion, He informed the disciples that when He is glorified, He would ask the Father to send them the Holy Spirit. “…And I will as the Father, and He will give you another Counselor (or Comforter) to be with you forever – the Spirit of Truth). The world cannot accept Him nor know Him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you… But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my mane, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”, John 14:16-17, 25-26.   Lesson Objectives: 1. To know the role of the Holy Spirit during the earthly life of Jesus. 2. To understand the baptism of the Holy Spirit and why we need Him today. 3. To understand how we can be baptized with the Holy Spirit and remain continually filled with Him.   1. What was the role of the Holy Spirit in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ from the follow scriptures: Isaiah 11:1-5, 61:1-3; Luke 1:35, 3:21-22, 4:1: Acts 1:1-2, 10:38 a. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit b. He was filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Holy Spirit. c. The infilling of the Holy Spirit empowered Him for life and ministry d. He relied completely on the Holy Spirit’s enablement for His ministry in terms of preaching, teaching and healing. e. The class should mention other details stated in Isaiah 11:1-5, 61:1-3. The life and ministry of Jesus typifies that of the believer. The Holy Spirit was poured out on the day of Pentecost to perform exactly the same roles He played in the life of Jesus.   2. Is the believer filled with the Holy Spirit the same moment he is born again? Acts 1:8, 2:4, 19:1-7; Ephesians 1:13-14 The believer is marked in Christ with a “seal”, which guarantees the believer’s inheritance until the redemption of those who are Christ’s from the world. This seal is a measure of the Holy spirit. His presence within us is to evidence that we belong to Jesus Christ. The baptism of the Holy Spirit, in contrast, is receiving the fullness of the Holy Spirit to empower us to be “witnesses” with our lives and service. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a definite experience that every born again Christina must experience to be fruitful. He is the strength for Christian life and ministry. July 2018, A month of prayer and fasting

Glory be to God, God has allowed us to enter into another year of July, month of prayer and fasting. This year’s theme is taken from Zechariah 4:7, “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain”. We speak to every mountain like situation in your life, “Thou shalt become a plain”. Every mountain of sickness, every tent of poverty, every bondage to sin. We take authority over every situation that appears to be bigger than God. We speak to those generational mountains that have kept your family in bondage. Our God is BIGGER than you O great mountain. During this month we pray that the Lord will reveal every mountain situation in your life. Many of us have lived in such situations for so long that it has become normal for us. Join us this month. Bring your anointing oil, bring your prayer requests, bring the pictures of your loved ones. If you cannot physically join us feel free to send us emails or messages with your prayer requests.
