Empowered for Success by the Holy Spirit (Part 1), July 1st-July 7th 2018

Central Thought: The Holy Spirit enables the believer to succeed.  Hymn: Spirit Divine! Attend our prayers.   Text: Like 12:15, 1 Samuel 10:6-7, 10-11, Ezekiel 36:26-27, Joel 2:28-29   To be successful is “to be” and “do” what God designed us for, daily and in accordance with His word or statues. “For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” Ephesians 2:10. The span of success for the believer is all encompassing, in every area of life, In 3 John 2 (NIV), the purpose of God for the believer is succinctly captured: “I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you even as your soul is getting on well”. This is further made clearer “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” 2 Corinthians 9:8. It is clear that God is delighted in enabling us to be successful in every area of life and therefore bring glory to Him. He is not glorified when we are failures! In this study we will be examining how the Holy Spirit provides enablement for the believer to succeed.   Lesson Objectives: To understand how God’s definition of success differs with that of the world. To understand the characteristics of the Holy Spirit. To highlight some pivotal roles of the Holy Spirit in biblical history.   Question 1.) What is the difference between success as defined by the world and God’s perspective? It is important that the believer deliberately refuses to be “molded” into the mindset of the world concerning success (Romans 12:1-3). The world defines success purely in material terms. Were Abraham. Joseph, and David successful? Going by the worlds standards, they had immense wealth and occupied prominent positions, so they were! But were Jeremiah, John the Baptist or Apostle John, who died on the island of Patmos successful too? It is unlikely that the world would see these men as successful or role models. Jeremiah was a prophet, had very little of a settled life and left no mansions. John the Baptist was a prophet too, dressed in animal skin, ate locusts and honey and was beheaded and John the beloved lived the last days of his life in isolation and possible lack. But they were very successful men in God’s eyes, achieving the purposes that God called them to! So, definitions of success based on purely material terms are unbiblical. The Lord stated clearly “… Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Like 12:15. In Matthew 6:33, the Lord enjoins us to make the pursuit of righteousness and the establishment of His kingdom, our priority in life and all else including wealth, position, which all men seek after, will be ours too. To become increasingly successful in life is to continually grow into God’s revealed purpose for our lives and ministry thereby pleasing the Father and glorifying his name wherever we are and go.   Question 2.) Central Thought: Jesus Christ is out true mentor and role model. Hymn: All to Jesus I surrender Text: Matthew 14:22-32, Hebrews 12:1-2   In the first part of the study, we examined four important qualities of Jesus Christ our Lord in His sojourn on earth. These qualities were Love, Humility, Sinlessness, and Discipline. These qualities were part of the manifestation of His loyalty and faithfulness to God. There are other qualities of interest which Christ had as a lifestyle, and which we need to possess as His followers. These are the qualities of Meekness, Compassion, being prayerful and given to service. In following the footsteps of Christ, we need to under study every character of His life as a complete package and thereafter think of how we can faithfully emulate them. Our faith is intended to permeate every aspect of our conduct and relationships in a wholesome and not selective manner. The qualities of Meekness, Compassion, being prayerful and service oriented are deep personal attributes usually developed under the compelling influence of the Holy Spirit. It is the goal of this second part of the study to carefully x-ray how Christ exhibited these qualities and how best we can develop them in us.   Lesson Objectives: The objective of this study are as follows: To explain the meaning of meekness, compassion, being prayerful and being service-oriented. Discuss how Christ demonstrated these qualities; and Discuss how we can follow the footsteps of Christ in demonstrating these qualities.   Question 1.A.) Explain the term meekness and discuss how Jesus demonstrated meekness in His earthly ministry. Matthew 11:29 Generally speaking meekness is the attribute which endows one with the ability to endure injury and disadvantage from others with patience and without resentment. It is the attribute of non-violence that partners a gentle spirit. Jesus demonstrated meekness when He made a persuasive invitation to weary souls (Matthew 11:28-29), and by His God-ordained non-violent disposition (Matthew 12:20). Furthermore He was not an advocate of resentment for others or resort to self-help (Matthew 26:51-53). Also, He accorded value and decency to children in His ministry (Mark 10:13-16) and was not disposed to outright condemnation of a woman caught in adultery (John 8:3-11).   Question 1.B.) Discuss how we can follow the steps of Christ in the area of meekness. 2 Timothy 2:24-25, Galatians 6:1 To be like Christ, the child of God must not strive or be engaged in physical combat with the opposition. His power lies in the word of God and not in force of arm. He is to be gentle and coordinated, and not bound to respond to every provocation. In relating with those who fall short of grace we must not imply superiority but put on a gently attitude of compassion and empathy. Today, many believers are snared by the downfall of a fellow believer when they join to suspect, condemn, and happily broadcast the error of the other. Galatians 6:1, 1 Corinthians 10:12.   Question 2.A) Explain the term “Compassion”, and discuss some instances of the demonstration of compassion by Jesus. Compassion is the attitude of having a sympathetic consciousness of the distress of another, with a desire to contribute towards the alleviation of such distress. In His Steps (Part 1), 6/17/18-6/23/18

Central thought: Christ is our true mentor and role model. Hymn: “All to Jesus I Surrender”. Text: 1 Peter 2:17-25   As believers in Christ, it is expected that we look up to Him as our perfect example. We are to reflect His character in every aspect of our lives. He provided a clear standard for the believer through His teachings and personal lifestyle. In His relationship with God the Father and in His dealings with humanity He manifested some outstanding qualities. Our understanding of the dimensions of these qualities will put us in very good stead to practice them to the glory of God. It is not enough to pay lip service to them, it is rather very important that we progressively reflect these characters as we march on in faith. In His walk on earth Jesus Christ proved His loyalty and faithfulness to God by showing the attributes of love, humility, sinlessness, meekness, compassion, praying, discipline and service. In this two-part study, we shall be looking at each of the attributes listed above with a view to understanding how best we can manifest them in our own lives. Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this study are as follows. To explain the meaning of the concepts: Love, Humility, Sinlessness and Discipline. To discuss how Christ manifested these qualities To discuss how we can follow the footsteps of Christ to manifest them.   Question 1.A.) Explain the term love and discuss how Jesus demonstrated love for others. In the context of the scriptures, love is the God-inspired affection, warm enthusiasm and commitment towards another person that results in benevolent attitude towards that person. Jesus Christ demonstrated His love for God the Father by being obedient to His will and not seeking personal fulfillment outside the Father. He also honored God in all His conduct and demonstrated full commitment to the Fathers business. (John 6:38, 14:31, and 17:4). To the church (Ephesians 5:2, 25) Jesus demonstrated love by sacrificing and laying down His life for us sending the Holy Spirit to empower the church and providing answers to petitions and prayers made in His name (John 14:16, 15:13). He is also doing everything possible to make the church presentable, without spot or wrinkle. Jesus demonstrated His love for sinners by showing compassion for their state, praying for them and inviting them to the light of God. To His enemies (Luke 23:34), Jesus understood their ignorance and prayed the Father to forgive them. Jesus also demonstrated love towards children (Mark 10:13-16) by giving them attention, carried them in His arms and blessed them. In all, the love demonstrated by Jesus was Godly, unconditional, sacrificial and total.   Question 1.B) Discuss how we are to follow the footsteps of Christ in the area of love. In following the footsteps of Christ, we must have genuine love for God, for Christ, for the church, for the brethren, for children and for the opposers of the faith. This must be the agape kind of love which should be demonstrated unconditionally, sacrificially, totally so that we might obtain eternal life. Isaac The Covenant Child Central Thought: God keeps His covenant with His people.   Text: Genesis 22:1-18, 25:19-21, 26:1-6   Isaac was the son of Abraham and Sarah.  He was born when his father was one hundred years old and the mother ninety years.  He was a covenant child which God promised Abraham.  Ishmael had already been born to Abraham at this time and he was almost giving up hope, thinking that it was no longer possible for him and his wife Sara to have children.  Abraham was pleading with God on behalf of Ishmael, Genesis 17:15-18.  “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed: and thou shall call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant and with his seed after him”, Genesis 17:9.  God is the covenant keeping God, “what He had promised, He was able also to perform, Romans 4:21b.  We can be rest assured that God is too faithful to fail.  Whatever promise He makes to us as His children, He will surely bring to pass.  He is not a man that He should lie, neither the son of man that He will repent.  His word is Yea and Amen. In this study, we shall discuss the birth of Isaac, his growth and progress in life from childhood to adulthood.  We shall also highlight some lessons we can learn from the story of his life to see how we can apply them to our lives.   Lesson Objectives: 1. To discuss how Isaac’s birth marked the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham; 2. Highlight the lessons we can learn from the Scriptures concerning Isaac as a child. 3. Examine how Isaac handled the barrenness of his wife and the lessons we can derive from it. 4. Identify the secret of Isaac’s prosperity and the lessons that can be derived from it. 5. To identify some shortcomings in the life of Isaac as recorded in the Scriptures that we must avoid.   Bible Truths: 1. Discuss how Isaac’s birth marked the beginning of the fulfilment of God’s covenant with Abraham?  Genesis 18:9-15, 21:1-7, 17:9-27; Acts 3:13, 24-25; Romans 9:6-10 Isaac was the son of Abraham, who was born to him by Sarah his wife when Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah ninety years.  The birth of Isaac was the fulfilment of God’s promise to Abraham.  “…I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son”, Genesis 18:10. Therefore Isaac was a child of promise.  God had promised Abraham that Sarah his wife was going to give birth to a son and that the child should be named Isaac which means laughter.  God also told Abraham that He would establish a covenant with Isaac for an everlasting covenant.  Although God entered into this covenant with Abraham a long time before the period of the birth of Isaac, the covenant found its fulfilment at the birth of Isaac, Genesis 15:18.  God’s word will surely come to pass: no matter how long it takes, it will never fail.   2.  Read Genesis 22:6-10 and highlight the lessons we can learn from Isaac as a child.   Central Thought: Christianity is all about knowing Christ, living for him and making him known.   Hymn: I’ve a message from the Lord. Text: Ephesians 1:1-23   Christ is the author and finisher of the Christian faith. Christian life is all about Christ living His life through us. It is all about knowing Christ, living for him and making Him known. He is the reason we do what we do as Christians. Unfortunately, we live at a time when Christ is not given His rightful place in the Church. A closer look at the advertisements on our bill boards, handbills and posters including those on electronic media shows that little or nothing is said about our Lord Jesus Christ. Rather, emphasis and prominence is given to the head of missions, pastors in charge, speakers and denominations. The worst is that some of the messages from our pulpits say little or nothing about Christ. But we know that Biblical Christianity is not about any man or organization. Rather, it is all about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 5:39 “search the scriptures, for in them you think ye have eternal life and they are they which testify of me”. Both Old and New Testament is about life, ministry and mission of Christ. He is the beginning and ending of our Christian faith. This study will help us identify some of the benefits we have in Christ and how to make Him the center of our lives.   Lesson Objectives: To understand the phrase “Christ the reason”. To appreciate our inheritance in Christ Jesus; and To identify some factors that can enhance our living the life of Christ.   Question 1.) What do you understand by the phrase “Christ the Reason”. “Christ the reason” implies that our Lord Jesus Christ is the cause and purpose of all we do as Christians. Our actions and inactions are explained in Christ. The basic reason for Christianity is to crown Jesus as Lord. When we give our lives to Christ, our sins are forgiven. He becomes the Savior and Controller of our lives. He assumes the position of Lord, Master and Ruler of our lives. He now has dominion over our lives, decisions and ambitions. We are no longer in charge of our lives but Christ is. Paul could say “ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me” Christian living is not about us, but about Christ.   Question 2.) What made Paul to address the brethren at Ephesus as “The Saints and Faithful in Christ”. Ephesians 1:1 Paul’s letter was addressed to the saints at Ephesus, that is, to the Christians who were members of the body of Christ there. The notion that the word “saints” is for some extremely holy and chosen dead Christians has no place in scriptures. All faithful Christians are saints and all saints are Christians.
