The Overcomer’s Faith, 12/31/17-1/6/18

Central Thought: The believer should have the disposition of loyalty, fidelity and a winning attitude in line with God’s word.   Text: 1 John 5:4-5, Mark 9:23, Hebrews 11:24-26     Faithful men of God of scriptural times displayed some rare depth of conviction in their relationship with God. They spoke words and carried out actions that were potent and deeply inspired. Great results were obtained and outstanding victories were won to the glory of God. The display of trust and manifestation of supernatural confidence is directly hinged on the level of fellowship and communion developed already. These persons had come to a stage where they clearly understood the will and promptings of God. Their words were not as in emotional outbursts, neither were they known for prowess in oratory. Their words of faith were aptly released from a deep reservoir of spiritual experiences with God. They spoke as they believed and it was so. They projected God and not self. It is important that every believer develop and exercise unshakeable faith in God. This is to be cultivated through fellowship, nurtured with right mentality of resilience, persistence and the winning attitude in line with the word of the overcomer’s faith. This study will explain how present day believers can develop and manifest the overcomers’ faith in our day to day activities. Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this study are as follows: To explain the meaning of the concept overcomers’ faith. To identify the source of the overcomers’ faith and how we can develop such faith. To list the main hindrances to exercising the overcomers’ faith. To state the benefits of having the overcomers’ faith.   Question 1.) Explain the phrase “Overcomers Faith”. To overcome means to surmount, subdue or prevail over an obstacle. It is to overwhelm, and win outrightly. Faith is an attitude that has to do with level of conviction and trust in a situation, an obligation that has bearing on loyalty and confidence. Overcomers’ faith refers to a mentality of strong conviction, complete trust and confidence in God’s willingness and ability to perform His promise. It is the display of resilient and persistent character of mind based on the word of God, so as to prevail over challenges. It involves the expression of positive words and matching them with corresponding action in a manner anticipatory of imminent victory.   Question 2.) Give scriptural examples of persons who demonstrated overcomers’ faith. There are several instances of pious men who displayed the overcomers’ faith at some point of their lives. Some of them are: Abraham (Genesis 22:7-8) When he told his young son Isaac that the Lord will provide a ram for Himself, and it soon came to pass. Isaac (Genesis 26:19-22) When he sowed much under drought in the land of the Philistines, and was not discouraged by natural and man-made obstables, and he eventually harvested a hundred fold that year. Moses (Exodus 14:13-14) When he told the frightened Israelites that “The Egyptians you see today, you shall see them no more”, and it came to pass in less than twenty four hours. The Birth of Jesus, 12/24/17-12/30/17

  Central Thought: Celebrating the Lordship of Jesus Christ   Hymn: Joy to the world, the Lord is come   Text: Luke 2:1-20   The birth of Jesus Christ is the essence of the Christmas celebration. Ironically, many people celebrate Christmas without recourse to the significance of the celebration. In other words, many celebrate the birth of whom they do not know. Worse still is that they are not even willing to consider the purpose of the celebration or how it affects their personal life, even when someone tells them. To some, Christmas is just an annual Christian festival, an opportunity to wine and dine. This study will help us look beyond the glamour of the season and get hold of the essence of the birth of Jesus Christ.   Lesson Objectives: The study aims at helping us- Understand God’s ability to fulfill all His promises. Understand Christ’s humble nature. Understand the purpose of Christ’s birth. Learn what is expected of Christians at the season of the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.   Question 1a.) What do we learn about God as the decree of Caesar Augustus helped to fulfill his prediction concerning Christ? Luke 2:1-5, Micah 5:2   The decree of Caesar Augustus went out by the will of God in order to fulfill His plan to bring His son into the world. In the garden of Eden. God made a promise that the seed of the woman would bruise the head of the serpent and this was accomplished In the birth of Jesus Christ. In Micah 5:2, the prophet predicted that the Messiah (Jesus Christ) would come from Bethlehem in the city of David. At the time of the decree, Mary whom God ordained to give birth to Jesus Christ was living outside Bethlehem with Joseph her espoused husband, and she was already pregnant of the child. Caesar’s decree directed everyone to go back to his home town for registration. Mary and Joseph had to return to Bethlehem, their home town where Christ was born. Question 1b.) “There was no room for them in the inn”. What does this teach us? Luke 2:7b   When all the citizens of Bethlehem returned, accommodations reserved for them were fully occupied and Mary and Joseph could not be accommodated. At the time for the birth of Mary’s child, there was no room for them in the inn to stay. Eventually the child was born in a manger because “There was no room in the Inn”. This teaches us that God’s purposes and plans must always be accomplished with or without human provision. God is all sufficient. There is no limitation with Him. He is able to do whatever He says He will do. We should therefore learn to believe and trust Him to accomplish those things He has promised us. He is trust worthy and faithful to see us through all our challenges.   Question 2) Discuss the significance of Christ’s birth in humble surroundings. Christ was born in a manger- a stall for feeding cattle. The prophesy in Isaiah 42:1-3 described the Messiah as one who “shall not cry not lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. Joseph and Mary: The favored of God, 12/17/17-12/24/17

Central Thought: God’s favor is upon those whose hearts are stayed on Him. Hymn: I’ve a message from the Lord.  TEXT: Matthew 1:8-25, Luke 1:26-45   The story of the lives of Joseph and Mary reveals to us that God decides to favor those who are willing to submit fully to His will and ready to obey and carry out divine instruction even when such an instruction would bring pain or dissatisfaction to them. On his part, Joseph was ready to obey and do the will of God even when he knew this would cause him to experience some pain. Mary, a virgin was a humble young lady who kept herself from defilement and became a chosen vessel by God to accomplish His eternal plan of salvation of man. Mary willingly submitted herself to the will of God. We shall be considering the character of this couple who were chosen and favored by God to be the earthly parents of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Lesson Objectives: To identify where Joseph was living before the birth of Christ and the circumstances that led to him to move to Bethlehem. To identify the qualities in the lives of Joseph and Mary worth emulating.  To examine the lessons learnt from the encounter of Mary with the angel.  To explain the angel’s reference to Elizabeth and Mary’s visit to Elizabeth in the city of Judah. To comment on the relationship between faith and the fulfilment of God’s promise.   Question 1a.) Where was Joseph living before the birth of Christ? Luke 2:1-4 Before the birth of Christ, Joseph was living in the city of Nazareth in Galilee. He went from Judea to Bethlehem; the city of David because he was of the house and lineage of David.   Question 1.b) Explain the circumstances that forced Joseph to move to Bethlehem. Joseph had to move to Bethlehem because there was a decree from Caesar Augustus that all should be taxed. All the people were to be taxed in their own home cities. Therefore, Joseph had to go from Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David. The circumstance that made Joseph to move to Bethlehem was also to fulfill the scriptures as prophesied in the Old Testament, Micah 5:2 “But thou, Bethlehem Ephrata, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall come forth unto me that is to be the ruler of Israel; whose goings forth have been of old, from everlasting”. The fulfilment of this was the birth of Christ.   Question 2a.) Identify some qualities in the life of Joseph that are worth emulating. Matthew 1:18-25, Deuteronomy 22:22-27, Luke 2:41, 51-52 There were many qualities in the life of Joseph, which we can emulate. He lived by the biblical injunction as recorded in Hebrews 13:4 “Marriage is honorable in all and the bed undefiled…” He did not have carnal knowledge of Mary before they were formally married. In fact, even after God instructed Joseph to take Mary, he did not have any sexual relationship with her till she had given birth to Christ. He exhibited self-control.He was also a just man.   Hymn: “Take my life and Let it be” Central Thought: Submission at all levels, is an evidence of the depth of our understanding of God.   Text:1 Peter 2:13- 25 , 3:1-7   The Lord Jesus submitted to the authority of God the Father, while physically here on earth. He had course to pay tax to human government and submitted Himself to the point of death; to the death on the cross even against His will and convenience (if it please You let this cup pass me , not my will but let Your will be done). Jesus by His conduct laid example for us to follow (1 Peter 2:21). Jesus stands out in history much more than the greatest leader the world has ever known, by His submission and became highly exalted. Let us therefore examine this study with humble hearts and readiness of mind to obey God’s word. Lesson Objectives: At the end of this study, we trust God to enable us to attain the following: To know what submission is and who we are to submit to. To know the starting point in our submission to God and how we are to submit to Him. To understand how we are to submit to: Political leadership Masters Church Authority   Question 1a) What is submission? The word submit means to yield or surrender (oneself) to the will or authority of another or others. Submission therefore means to let down, to lower, to put down or place under. It also means to yield or give way to another. It is counting less of yourself, not insisting on ones right, to bring oneself under the authority of another. Submission has nothing to do with inferiority. Submission does not mean domination and does not mean agreeing on everything. It may include giving up ones right ie. Letting down what an individual has decided, bringing it under the decision of another. It is not the same as timidity which is lack of courage or confidence. Submission is a deliberate decision, and no one is inherently born with this attribute. Submission is not easy; it takes an understanding of scriptures and the knowledge of God to submit. Submission could be abused or taken for granted. Biblical submission is recognition of our dependence on God, and must be total. Apostle Peter admonished believers to submit themselves to governing authority, and to kings. Biblical submission is a command from God.   Question 1b) Who are those we are to submit to? The scripture is clear on those we are to submit to. 1 Peter 2:13, 14 says “submit yourselves to every ordinance of man (human institution) for the Lord’s sake, whether it be to the king as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by Him for the punishment of evil doers, and for the praise of them that do well”. We are therefore mandated to submit ourselves to constituted authority. The Christian should be an example in abiding by the laws of the land and not be a deviant, breaking laws (no matter how simple they may appear to be). Submission to constituted authority should be a natural thing to the believer. These authorities are not terrors to those that obey rules/laws. We are to submit within the limits...
