The Comfort of God’s Presence, 11/26/17- 12/2/17

Central Thought: God’s presence in the believers life guarantees victory. Hymn: ” I need Thee every hour”. Exodus 33:1-16, Psalms 91   The Chambers Dictionary 2th century defines the word Comfort as: to relieve from pain or distress; to strengthen; to sooth; whatever gives ease or enjoyment. The same Dictionary defined Presence as: Being in a place in question, readily found or existing in the thing in question. The comfort of God’s presence in the context of this study therefore is; the strength we have from God, the relief we get by God’s existence in us when we go through life’s huddles, battles, and challenges. This is the encouragement the believer gets from God even when no one understands what he/she is going through. The same presence was what the children of Israel carried on their way from Egypt to Canaan, being evidenced in the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day- Exodus 13:21: water flowing from the rock as in Exodus 17:1-7, Quail and Manna from Heaven as in Exodus 16. In contemporary time, there are testimonies of people who have experienced God in His power as the Israelites did. It’s God’s intentions that we all should carry His presence. The Lord’s presence in a nation, community, church and individual’s life is very vital for victory, security/safety and excellence. In times like this we need to experience the blessedness of God’s presence.   Lesson Objectives:  To understand how we can experience God’s presence and maintain same.  To understand what it means to be conscious of His presence.  To know the hindrances to His presence.  To appreciate the benefits of His presence.    Question 1.) How can we experience God’s presence and maintain it?  The knowledge that God is everywhere as stated in Psalm 139: 1-13 is of no benefit until it is appreciated by man. An individual, church, and society needs the presence of God. This presence is God Himself dwelling in man. All must desire this. The following are steps that must be taken to experience and maintain God’s presence. a.) Be born again: John 3:1-7 A man cannot know God until he repents, forsake his sins and gives his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the foundation of man’s relationship with God. b) Be filled with the Holy Spirit: God indwells man by the Holy Spirit. The believer must therefore ask God for His baptism. He is the Comforter. John 14:16-17. c.) Obedience to God and His word: John 14:15-18, James 1:22 God’s presence is guaranteed continually when we live in obedience to Him. d.) Be righteous before God. Psalms 140:13, 1-5 God cannot dwell in an unholy temple. His eyes are too pure to behold sin. Stand in the righteousness in Christ Jesus. e.) Consistent study of God’s word. 1 Peter 2:2 The believer must make conscious effort to study God’s word. It’s the word that God will use to comfort when the need arises. f.) Maintain a prayerful life. 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Luke 18:1 The believer must consistently stay in God’s presence in prayer. The Fruitful Faith, 11/19/17-11/26/17

Central thought: Fruitfulness is the evidence of true faith. Hymn: My Faith looks up to Thee Text: Mark 7:24-37, 9:14-32 The importance of faith in the life of a believer cannot be over emphasized. Faith by which we receive something from God is so important that it should be applied in everything that a believer does. It is written that the just shall live by faith. God is faithful and that is why He honors the faith of His children. During the first sacrifices made in the Bible, there was a manifestation of faith on the part of Abel and God honored the faith of His servant. Many great men of God like Abraham who showed a high degree of serving God with faith were greatly honored by God. The Bible says that it is impossible to please God without faith. It is not sufficient for one to confess faith but that this faith produce fruits that will attract others to the faith. If a man’s faith in Christ is not producing fruit, that faith must be re-examined. Lesson Objectives:  To know the meaning of faith. To identify some examples of faith that produced fruits in the Scriptures.  To learn that only faith in Christ Jesus can produce fruit.  To know the importance of the word of God in producing faith. To know that we receive blessings according to our faith.  Question 1.) What is faith? King James version of the Holy Bible explains faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. According to the Good news Bible, to have faith is to be sure of things we cannot see (Hebrews 11:1). According to Penny catechism, faith is a supernatural gift of God which makes us to believe without doubting what God has revealed to us. All the above definitions are correct and are saying the same thing in different ways. It is faith that makes us believe that God will do what He has promised for those who serve Him without doubts in their heart. It is faith that makes a Christian to begin to express gratitude to God as he feels the existence of what he prayed for and believes that God has given him that thing though he has not seen it physically. Faith is that force that brings what is in the spiritual to the physical. A measure of faith is given to every individual and for this reason no one can say that God cheated him by not giving him faith. As we are commanded to repent, so also we are commanded to have faith, (Mark 11:22, 16:14, Luke 17:6). Faith comes by hearing, reading and heartily accepting God’s word. (Romans 10:17). When we stand on the promises of God by faith, we move with God and move God into action, God can never fail. The promises of God are “Yea and Amen”, and every prophecy in God’s word will come to pass but only faith in the prophecies will yield fruits. For us to have the faith that produces fruit, we need to study the Bible daily so as to hear from God. We also need to hear the testimony of others as these can challenge to us to exercise our faith. Central thought: victory is the pre-determined lot of the believer in every challenge in life.     Hymn: Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!   Text: Romans 8:31-39, Ephesians 6:10-18, 2 Corinthians 10:2-6   The Christian life is full of challenges and conflicts coming in various ways, sources and degrees. The objective of every challenge is to cause a breach between God and His children. At conversion, a believer breaks ranks with satan, and pledges full allegiance to Jesus Christ. The devil is always offended by this, and he does all within his power to bring about a break in the fellowship with God. It is a thing of joy to note that victory has been obtained and made certain at the Cross. Jesus had to experience all the perils of human existence and came out without sin. He proceeded to the cross where He died to redeem mankind from the captivating chain of sin and satan. Man obtained reconciliation and acceptance in the presence of God, and he was restored to the original dominion. In this new state, man is not just to conquer, subdue and control, but has been admitted into a concluded victory. He is to rule by virtue of faith and obedience to the word of God. In this state the believer is higher than a conqueror. There may be challenges around but they become meat and stepping stones to higher glory. This study is therefore intended to inform the believer in Christ that he has been declared victorious before the battle.   Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this study are as follows: To explain what it means to be “more than conquerors”. To identify the forces we are contending against. To identify the weapons at the disposal of the believer. To state the role of Christ in our victory. To discuss why believers may sometimes experience defeat. To identify the benefits in being more than a conqueror.   Question 1.) Explain the phrase “More than Conquerors”. To conquer means to subjugate or acquire by force or strategy. It is to overcome obstacles or to bring down and destroy an existing power. A conqueror is someone who has conquered. In the literal sense, to be more than conquerors implies a situation where victory is always 100% guaranteed. There is no room for failure because of the superiority of force and strategy provided by Jesus Christ. Victory is a concluded matter for the believer. In the figurative sense, to be more than a conqueror means to live in obedience and total submission to God in the light of the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection. By His death He conquered death, and by resurrection He became more than all the conquerors of this world that have been bonded mankind since creation. He obtained a new name and a new status by His resurrection, and He co-opted us into that same privilege. To be more than conquerors, therefore is to submit to the virtues of faith and patience in the battles of life. We are more than conquerors because the benefits of our victory in Christ far exceed the rewards available to literal conquerors of the world. Central Thought: We were created to please God and do His will. Hymn: All to Jesus I surrender Text: Colossians 1:9-11, John 4:34, Hebrews 11:6   At conversion, a repentant sinner is forgiven and washed clean to begin a new life. His ambitions and aspirations are re-ordered as he contemplates on how to please God before anything else. We were created for His pleasure and the reason for our existence is to keep doing His will (Revelation 4:11). There must be real agreement between out professed faith and our practical life. This harmony is a manifestation of our willingness to please God. It involves the prayerful discharge of our duties. The Christian race is a call to the service of God, where the means and the methods are determined by God as revealed in His Word. Our lives must be primarily patterned to seek His pleasure. This is the only way our lives will count now and hereafter.   Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this study are as follows: To explain what it means to please the Lord. To discuss the place of faith, grace, and obedience in pleasing the Lord. To identify some Bible characters who pleased the Lord and others who did not. To enumerate attitudes and habits that will enable one to please God. To know the consequences of not pleasing God and the benefits of pleasing Him.   Question 1.) What does it mean to please God? To please God is to do things according to His will. It begins with being reconciled to God by believing in His son Jesus Christ and putting our faith in His finished work on calvary. It is to live according to the will and purpose of God, and to become an agent of God’s kingdom here on earth. Pleasing the Lord is to live a life that is governed by the word of God, the Spirit of God and the love of God which all together results in pleasing God. It is to do things that will delight God on a continuous and consistent manner. Pleasing God shows the core/pillar/pivot of our relationship with God because it is the primary reason for our existence.   Question 2.) Discuss the place of faith, grace, and obedience in pleasing the Lord. Ephesians 2:6-10, Hebrews 11:6, 13:20-21   Pleasing God is beyond mere compliance to a set of rules and regulations. It is more or less an exercise that has diving backing, provision and expectation. Faith is the attitude by which we are projected into relationship with the Father through the Son. By this we enter into communion with God, and become pleasing and acceptable to Him. Grace is the divine provision which qualifies us to approach God so that our sinful nature may receive mercy and forgiveness. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sins and brings us into the position of fellowship with God. Obedience is the practical manifestation of faith and it is required of every believer by God. Faith, grace and obedience are key elements in our resolve to please God. Obedience is the practical expression of faith, while faith is the positive attitude by which we tap into the grace of God.   Question 3.) Moses: The Lord’s Servant- Part 4, October 29th, 2017-November 5th, 2017

Central thought: God requires absolute obedience to His instructions. Hymn: “I am Thine, O Lord” TEXT: Numbers 20:1-3 In Moses, we see a man described as the meekest man on earth, who in the course of his walk with God, manifested his weak point at a time when God expected greater commitment from him. Moses was a not perfect man and God did not change who Moses was (i.e. a man slow of speech), He did not give Moses new abilities and strength. Rather, He took Moses’ characteristics and remolded them until they were suited to His purpose. God found in him, a man good enough to discuss with face to face. However that did not stop God from unfolding His anger when Moses faltered. So we should not take God for granted or feel that we have become too familiar with God that we can undermine His instructions. As we conclude our series of study on the life of Moses, a great servant of God, we shall focus on his strength and weakness demonstrated in the course of his walk with God.   Lesson objectives: This study aims at helping us- Identify the core quality of Moses and the costly mistake he made. Identify and examine the challenge/obstacle faced by the children of Israel in their journey to the promised land. To understand God’s expectation of anyone who works in His vineyard. To identify the lessons derivable from the error of Moses and Aaron.   Question 1.) Discuss Moses’ reaction to the following situations in the wilderness.  a.) When the Israelites faced obstacles. There were several occasions when the children of Israel were faced with obstacles in the wilderness. In Exodus 14: 10-14 they were faced with imminent destruction in the hand of the Egyptian army. Moses reacted to the situation by crying unto God and encouraging them not to be afraid but stand still, assuring them that the Egyptians they were seeing that day, they would see no more for ever- that God would fight for them and they would hold their peace. Exodus 15:22-25: They were confronted with lack of drinking water. It was so severe that they complained bitterly against Moses. Again Moses cried to the Lord for help and the Lord provided them with drinking water. Exodus 17:1-4. At Rephidim, as the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed towards the promised land, they were again faced with shortage of drinking water and as usual they complained and accused Moses of bringing them to die in the wilderness. On this occasion Moses reacted by accusing them of tempting God, he then in turn complained to God that the people were about to stone him. God told him what to do to provide water for the people. b.) When they sinned against God. Exodus 32:1-14, 30-33, Numbers 11:1-2, 14, 10-20. When Moses delayed in his journey to the mountain where he received the ten-commandments, the children of Israel made themselves a god of calf, built an altar and worshipped it and sinned against their God. In His anger, God said He would destroy the entire congregation and raise another generation through Moses.
