Empowered to shine for the Lord Jesus Christ, 8/13/17-8/19/17

  Central Thought: God has empowered His children to do exploits.   Hymn: I’ve a message from the Lord Text: Matthew 5:13-16, Mark 16:17, Acts 1:8, John 8:12, 15:16, Luke 10:19-20   Introduction: It is God’s will that as children of God we should be shining examples in every place and at all times. For that to be made possible, we as children need to be empowered by God. To be empowered means to be given authority or enabled. God has empowered every God fearing and born again child who comes to Him to shine for Him.   Lesson Objectives: To state the prerequisites for empowerment and how one can be empowered. To describe the scope of this empowerment as recorded in the Scriptures. To explain how the empowered one can shine for Jesus. To examine how some individuals in the Scriptures shined for Jesus Christ in their days. To identify the rewards when the empowered shines for Jesus Christ.   Question 1.A.) What is the prerequisite for empowerment? John 1:9-13, 3:3, 16, 8:12 The first prerequisite for empowerment is for one to receive Jesus as one’s Lord, Savior and Master. “But as many as received Him; to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12); the implication of this is that such a person must be born again. As soon as he or she has received Christ and is genuinely born again, and is ready to follow Jesus, who is the light of the world, he/she will no longer walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.   Question 1.B.) How can one be empowered? Joshua 1:8, Psalm 119:130, John 8:12, Acts 1:8 One of the ways one can get empowered is by studying, meditating and acting on the Word of God. “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do all that is written therein; for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shall have good success” (Joshua 1:8). In addition to this, one needs the Holy Spirit to be empowered “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witness unto me both in Jerusalem, and all in Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the world” (Acts 1:8). One must also endeavor to follow Christ who is the light of the world.   Question 2.) From the following scriptures describe the scope of empowerment. Mark 16:17, 18, Luke 10:19, Acts 1:8 We observe from the scriptures that the scope of empowerment is wide and muti-dimensional. Christ said in Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover”. The Holy Ghost was given for enablement to be a true witness to all and sundry in our immediate environment and to the uttermost parts of the earth.   Question 3.) Contentment, 8/6/17-8/13/17

Central Thought: Every believer should be grateful to God for their present status in life and trust God for a better future.   Text:Matthew 6:25, Philippians 4:12-13, 1 Kings 21:1-24   Hymn: “Take my life and let it be”   We live in an age when many people are interested in making quick and more money without necessarily working hard for it. Many people have the desire and rush to be rich by all means. It is sad to note that some Christians today are being carried away by this “get rich quick” syndrome, because in the larger society and in the church those who have “made it” are highly honored. Many Christians measure their level of spirituality with how affluent they are and so are willing to do anything to acquire material things just because they want to be like others. But the Bible tells us that a man’s life does not consist of the abundance of what he has (Luke 12:15). There is no need to be covetous or greedy. God has promised to supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). This study is aimed at inculcating in us the right value to life and teach us to be content with what God has given us at any point in time.   Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this lesson are: To understand the meaning of the word contentment and appreciate areas in which people demonstrate discontent. To understand what the Christian attitude should be in acquiring material possessions. To identify the things that make some people to lack contentment and the dangers of not being contented. To understand if contentment contradicts the principles of aspiring for higher heights.   Question 1.) What do you understand by the word contentment? Matthew 6:25, Philippians 4:12-13 The word contentment means a state of being happy and satisfied. It is accepting the state of one’s life and being grateful or happy with it. For the natural man, contentment represents self-actualization, i.e. the satisfaction of reaching one’s full potential; also it sands for a sense of security provided by what he has achieved. For the believer, Christ is the secret of his contentment. In Luke 12:15, the Lord Jesus admonished believers to be content with what they have. Apostle Paul lived a contented life and is a good example for us to follow. He suffered and sometimes went without the comforts of life. In Philippians 4:11-13, he declared “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need”. The believer’s trust should be absolutely on God, being satisfied with his/her condition regardless of the circumstances. On the contrary, some believers just like unbelievers, worry similarly over the issues of life. The believer in-spite of his situation, must be satisfied and secured with what he has, what he is and where he is going.   Question 2.) Identify those things that promote lack of contentment. The Family Empowered to do Exploits, 7/30/17-8/5/17

Text: Luke 19:13-19, 10:17-20, 9:1   Hymn: Take my life and let it be   Introduction: As a follow up to the parable of the noble man in Luke 19:13-27, when Jesus was departing this earth for heaven, He instructed His disciples to go into the world to propagate the gospel of salvation to mankind. As believers, we are expected to begin the gospel propagation from our homes, and spread it throughout the whole earth. This exploit is what God has empowered us to do.   Lesson Objectives: To know the family that is empowered. To know the convincing traits that can be seen in a family that is empowered. To enumerate ways God empowers families to do His business on earth. To know the dangers of disobedience and rewards of obedience to occupy till Christ comes.   Question 1.) Whose family is empowered? Acts 16:30-33 This is the family that is called out of the world to project the image and glory of God through Christ Jesus. This family is where the father, mother and children/ward have entered into covenant relationship with God through the finished work of Christ on the Cross of Calvary in genuine repentance, forgiveness of sins and acceptance of Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior. They are prepared to do what the word of God says and not to follow the worldly system. They are consistent in their belief and ready to serve the Lord until the end.   Question 2. Discuss some of the convincing traits that can be seen in a family that is empowered? A family that is empowered is that family that has a convincing trait of Godliness in personal relationship with Christ and with one another. It starts with the “key players” (ie. Father and Mother). Living in adherence to God’s standard. God testified that “Abraham would command his children and household to keep the way of the Lord” ( Genesis 18:19). Joshua boasted that “as for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15c). A home where the father (who is saddled with the responsibility of the priest, pastor, coordinator etc.) will like Joshua boast of his determination and commitment to serve God with his household should be able to submit totally to God’s command so as to be able to present his family to God on the last day. The mother submits to her husband in all things according to God’s will and the children/ward do likewise as Timothy.   Question 3. Enumerate ways God empowers families to do his business on earth, considering the following: The Gift of Salvation: The gift of salvation is the only accessible means of being a member of the family of God before we can be empowered to do exploits. Every member of this family must come to the point of experiencing the NEW BIRTH in order to obtain the adoption of a son/daughter in God’s family. Salvation is free, but not negotiable. It is a must for everybody. (John 3:3-7). No matter the position one occupies in the church, it cannot guarantee salvation. The Gift of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the seal of adoption. Central thought: The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous man availeth. Hymn: What a friend we have in Jesus Text: 2 Kings 19:10-20, 35-36, 20:1-6, 2 Chronicles 20:1-30 There are many situations we face in life as believers which may seem very difficult and unpleasant, and the believer may become discouraged and feel like giving up.  But prayer offers the believer the strength to perservere until the expected change comes. Job knew this so well that he rightly said “all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change comes”Job 14:14b. The Scriptures are replete with cases of people who when faced with very difficult situations prayed fervently to God and their stories changed for good. God brought about a turnaround. Therefore, it is imperative for every believer who desires a positive change in life, a successful and fruitful life in Christ, to be fervent in prayer. It is only through prayer that this change can come and be sustained.   Lesson Objectives: To explain the meaning of prayer. To Discuss how believers should pray. To highlight some ingredients to effective prayer. To discuss some practical situations from scripture of exploits done through prayers.   Question 1.) What does prayer mean? 1 Samuel 1:15-16, Luke 11:1-4 Prayer can rightly be said to be the means through which the believer communicates to God our Heavenly father. For this communication to be effective there must be a standing or existing relationship between the two parties. It therefore follows that it is only those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and personal Saviour that are qualified to partake in this relationship. Prayer is essentially a two-way communication. As we commune with our Heavenly Father in the place of prayer, pouring out our hearts to Him., He in turn responds by ministering to us through the Holy Spirit. Thus prayer provides the avenue through which we can come into God’s presence and enjoy fellowship with Him. Jesus said “Verily, Verily, I say unto you whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it you” John 16:23. The death, resurrection and ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ has given us access to the throne of grace.   Question 2.) How should believers pray? Matthew 6:5-15, John 14:13, Hebrews 11:6 In His sermon on the mount, Jesus taught on how the believers should pray. First of all, the one praying must acknowledge God as Father. The implication of this is that such a person must have accepted Jesus as Lord and personal Saviour. In acknowledging God as our Father, we must come to Him in worship and adoration before we begin to make our petitions known to Him. In addition, we must not harbor any unforgiveness while praying. We are to present our requests to God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Also, we must ask in faith believing that God is able to accomplish that which we ask of Him.   Question 3.) What are some of the ingredients to effective prayer? Central thought: Safety is of the Lord, and deliverance is His reward.  Hymn: Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah Text: Psalm 91:1-6   Introduction: Since the fall of man in the garden of Eden, the human race has been gripped by fear and insecurity. This resulted from the sin of Adam and Eve. Nations of the world are all facing the problem of insecurity both internally and externally. The fear of the unknown has driven man to seek help for security from sources that cannot provide true security and freedom from danger. Nations have gone into alliance with other nations so that they could assist them to defend their territorial integrity. Communities have formed vigilante groups to guard communities as a result of fear of armed robbery, kidnapping etc. Individuals have engaged the services of night guards and guard dogs, but in spite of all these, there is still no guarantee for protection from dangers. In this study, we shall be looking at God’s provisions for our freedom from fear and danger.   Lesson Objectives: This study aims at helping the believer to: Understand what Divine protection is. Know man’s effort towards protecting himself. Know some of the dangers God can protect us from. Understand what is meant by “the secret place of the Most High” Understand how we can break the grip of fear in our lives Know what God has put in place to ensure our protection   Question 1.a) What do you understand by “Divine Protection”?    The word “divine” stands for something that belongs to, or produced by God; in other words an identity of God. “Protection” means to keep something or someone safe from attack, harm or injury. It also means to defend. When we talk about “Divine Protection”, we are inferring the protection that comes from or provided by God.   Question 1.b) Identify some of the dangers the Lord can protect us from. We are surrounded by so many dangers, but God has promised to protect or deliver us from them all. We can identify some of them as follows The snares of the fowler and noisesome pestilence (Psalm 91:3) Evil or any form of plague (Psalm 91:10) Sicknesses and diseases (Exodus 15:26) Harm or any form of hurt (Mark 16:18) Flames of fire and the calamity of drowning in the waters (Isaiah 43:2) The hands of our enemies (Psalm 41:2) Powers of the wild beasts (Daniel 6:27) There is no danger the Lord cannot protect us from, even when we are not aware of them. He already made provision for our protection. It is His mercy and grace that keep us, not because of who we are or what we have done. If God will open our eyes to see the many dangers that we come across in our daily walk with Him, we will not fail but continue to give Him praises all day long.   Question 2.a) Highlight some measures that man always locally put in place to ensure protection. Man in his ignorance of God’s provision thought that he could secure his own protection and freedom by himself. He therefore set idols which he call gods for his protection. In addition.
