Upholding Christian values in this changing world (Part 1) 4/2/17- 4/8/17

Central thought: Believers must maintain the Christian values in our changing world Hymn: Onward Christian Soldiers Marching as to war Text: 2 Timothy 3:14-17, Jude 3-4, 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, 13-15, Galatians 1:6-9   Introduction: Upholding means the act by which something is sustained or maintained. To uphold is to hold up, to lift on high, to elevate, it also means to keep erect, to support, and to sustain among others. Upholding Christian values therefore means to sustain, keep erect/straight, the values of Christianity as laid down in scriptures. Christian values refer to the guiding principles derived from the teachings of Christ and as taught in scriptures. The values taught in scripture are always opposite to worldly values.   Lesson objectives: To understand the meaning of upholding Christian values in a changing world To identify the threats to upholding Christian values To state ways the individual and the church can uphold Christian values To appreciate the benefits of upholding the Christian values in a changing world   Question 1.a) What do you understand by “Christian Values”? “Christian values” are based on the principle of godliness laid down by scriptures. It means, “Esteeming highly or holding strongly as important the principles laid down in scripture by Christ”. This involves living out the word in our everyday life. These values are taught throughout the Bible. They are most important to the Christian race, and are opposite of worldly values. While worldly values include amassing wealth, power, pleasure, revenge, fame, status, etc., Christian values teach humility instead of pride, forgiveness instead of revenge, self-control instead of self-indulgence, love instead of hate etc. The Christian values as taught in scriptures are the foundational basis for the Christian faith and most beneficial to the believers who pattern their lives after them. It is not avoiding evil like a set of moral laws. Christian values are based on God and the work of Jesus Christ. The word of God is a clear guide for Christians to know what Christian values are. The word of God is the basis for Christian values and the believer must treasure the word and study it to be approved. The most important Christian value is for the believer to value God more than anything else and obey His word. Core Christian values include: repentance from dead works, to live by faith, live by grace, exercise love (to render to people more than they deserve), to give hope to the dying world, to ensure justice and peace as well as self-control and selfless service to God and humanity.   Question 1.b) What does it mean to uphold Christian values in a changing world? To uphold Christian value means sustaining the laid down principles taught in scripture. In spite of the contrary value system of the world and the contradictions aimed at watering down the standard laid down in the scripture, to uphold Christian value involves holding tenaciously to biblical truths. The most important Christian value is for a Christian to value God more than anything, anybody or any idea. We have to worship only God and love him with all our heart, soul and might (Luke 10:27). Christian values are based on spiritual things against material things; and though spiritual in nature, the evidence of these values come through deeds and actions....

Job the Upright Part 2, 3/26/17-4/1/17

Central Thought: Those who endure the test of faith will experience God’s great reward. Hymn: O God, our help in ages past Text: Job 1:13-22, 2:1-3    Introduction: The misery of Job Is hinged on the ideology of the devil: that no man serves God without personal material gain, and that man would curse and hate his maker (God) in the absence of materialism. However this theory of satan depicts the mystery that surrounds human existence and a call for the need to trust God in all situations. Mankind simply does not have in-depth knowledge in explaining why things happen the way they do. It is possible for man to rise above limitations by resolute faith in God because God does know why everything happens and will cause all to work together for good for those who love Him. It is also good to learn the profound truth that despite what happened to Job, his integrity and uprightness was intact, telling us Christians of today that when we have nothing left, God is enough, Let’s not push aside this ordeal of Job with the wave of the hand because the opening statement (in Job 1:1) depicts that this is a historical fact and not a myth (Dakes).   Lesson Objectives: To identify things taken away from Job by satan To examine how Job responded on each occasion he received news of losses. To ascertain that satan is an author/propagator of problems amongst men. To emphasize the fact that God is our deliverer from every adverse situation   Question 1.a) Enumerate things satan took away from Job and what he used on each occasion to strike. Job 1:13-19 At this time, God had given limited permission to satan to test Job, Satan struck four times in quick succession which were: The yoke of Oxen and assess, each numbering five hundred (Job 1:3). On this occasion they were taken away by the Sabeans (Job 1:15) killing those tending them, while only one escaped to tell the story. On the second occasion, the servants and seven thousand sheep were consumed. The weapons used was the fire of God, fallen from heaven and burnt all sheep and those caring for them and only one escaped. On the third occasion, the camels numbering three thousand (Job 1:17) were carried away. The instrument used was the Chaldeans who slew the servants with the edge of the sword. On the 4th occasion the sons and daughters who were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house were all killed. The agent identified was a great wind from the wilderness which struck the four corners of the house killing all occupants except one. In all the four occasions one servant escaped to tell the bad news, so as to inform Job of the happening. This is always the trick of the devil in his effort to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10).   Question 1.b) Examine Job’s response to these disasters that befell him and draw lessons. Job 1:20-22 Firstly, Job arose, rent his mantle showing a sign of sorrow and went further to shave his hair as a sign of mourning (Leviticus 21:5) and fell down upon the ground and worshipped. Job the Upright- Part 1, 3/19/17-3/25/17

Central Thought:Those who endure the test of Faith will experience god’s great reward. Hymn: O God, our help in ages past   Text: Job 1:1-12   Introduction: Job was a man who lived in the land of Uz, located South of Edom and west of Arabia (Dake’s Bible). Job was portrayed as a wealthy man, having a sizeable household of a wife, ten children and many servants. He was perfect and blameless. He was upright in all his ways, loved God and eschewed evil. Yet, God allowed Satan to destroy all that he had including his children, his flocks of sheep, camel, oxen and donkeys. As if that was not enough Satan afflicted him physically with ill health. In all these, Job refused to give up on God, even when his wife told him to curse God and die. His friends tried to persuade him to believe that he was suffering as a result of his sins, and all he needed to do was to confess his sins and repent, so God may have mercy on him and deliver him. Job did not understand what was happening to him, and God did not explain to him, in spite of all his questions. In all these, Job did not place his hope on his experience, wisdom or friends, rather he focused on God. May God through this study, teach us to trust Him in all situations.   Lesson Objectives: At the end of this study, we should be able to: Know what it means to be perfect, upright, one that fears God and eschews evil, as Job was described. Understand the extent of Job’s wealth and how he was rated among the men of the East. Understand how strict Job was in his religious beliefs and practices and the challenge it poses to Christian parents Expose some of the operations of the devil Reassure the righteous of God’s protection   Question 1.a) How as Job described in Job 1:1? Job was described as a man who lived in the land of Uz, who lived a perfect and upright life; he feared God and stayed away from evil. He was a man of integrity. It could also be said that Job walked in close fellowship with God.   Question 1.b) Explain what it means to be perfect, upright, one that fears God and eschews evil. To be perfect means to be excellent, complete, the best of its kind, very good, ideal having everything that is necessary. Upright stands for straight forward, strictly honest or honorable, in accordance with God’s expectation or will. One that fears God and eschews evil refers to someone who loves God so much that he would not like to offend Him in any way and so stays away from anything that offends God. These were the attributes of Job, which explains the seriousness of his relationship with his Holy God.   Question 2. a.) Identify what constituted the riches of Job. Job was blessed of God that he had ten children, 7000 sheep, 3000 camels, 500 teams of oxen and 500 female donkeys. Spreading the message of the Kingdom, 3/12/17-3/18/17

  Central Thought: The spreading of the gospel message is a task for all believers Hymn: Sowing in the morning sowing seeds of kindness Text: Mark 16:15-18, Matthew 24:14, Acts 1:8, 2:22-40   Introduction: The Lord Jesus came into the world to pay the price of salvation by dying on the cross at Calvary. Only Him alone was qualified to undertake this because Romans 3:23 declares that “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God”. Because all mankind belongs to the fallen race of Adam, none was qualified to redeem man from sin. But concerning the Lord Jesus, John said: “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world”. He came to fulfill the prophesy in Isaiah 53:5a which says “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities”. He paid the price of sin in full and obtained for us the salvation of our souls. Having accomplished this divine agreement, He left the Church with one assignment: “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to all creatures”. This command of the Lord remains the core mandate of the Church in every generation. Whatever the Church does, it is not allowed to lose sight of this one thing. Before His ascension into Heaven, he told the Apostles to tarry in Jerusalem until they were endued with power (Luke 24:49b). They needed this to be effective witnesses of the gospel in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and unto the utmost part of the world (Acts 1:8). The baton has been handed to us His people in this generation. We must continue with the assignment until we faithfully hand it over to the next generation or end the work if the Lord of the harvest comes in our time.   Lesson Objectives: Remind us of the Great Commission Know what constitutes the gospel message and who is qualified to preach it Identify the various methods involved in spreading the Kingdom message Understand the dangers of not spreading the gospel See what example the Church at Antioch offers to our generation   Question 1.)  What is the great commission? In Mark 16:15-18 and Matthew 28:18-20, the Lord Jesus commanded His disciples and by extension the Church today, to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. This is the great Commission. As long as there are men and women, anywhere in the world who have not heard the gospel (the good news of mankind’s redemption), the task given to the church is yet to be completed. It is our duty to seek out these souls and reach them with the message before they are taken to a Christ-less grave and eternity. All who hear us may not believe the message but there is a chance some will hear and believe when they are convicted of God. The Spirit of God accomplishes this in their heart when they hear the message.   Question 2.) What constitutes the gospel message and who is qualified to preach it? The gospel message must be made explicit (clear) to enable men understand and believe it.  It must not be confused with doctrinal issues we may teach to those who have believed.
