The Woman, Jezebel, July 17th, 2016

The Woman, Jezebel     Central Thought: Righteousness exalts a Nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.   Hymn: “Amazing Grace” Text: 1 Kings 19:1-3, 21:1-26     Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, Kind of Zidonians, 1 Kings 16:31; she was the wife of King Ahab and was a wicked Queen. She did not fear God and she destroyed the prophets of God, 1 Kings 18:4-13.  She was an outspoken woman at a time when females had little status and rights.  She was a foreigner and an idol worshiper, and meddled with the political affairs of the nation of Israel.  Her story is an account of the first time king of Israel who married a heathen woman.  In our days, the spirit that was at work in Jezebel is still much at work.  In this study, we shall be looking at some of her attributes and how to deal with the spirit that was at work in Jezebel.     Lesson Objectives: To know who Jezebel was in the Bible, and what were her attributes. To understand her influence and learn lessons from being unequally yoked. To understand how the spirit that was at work in Jezebel manifests in our time and how it can be dealt with. To see how Jezebel’s life ended. Lessons from the life of Jezebel.   Who was Jezebel in the Bible? 1 Kings 16:31, 18-19 As seen in our introduction, Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, King of Sidonians. Unlike Ruth who chose to serve the God of the people she got married to, by surrendering her gods for the God of Israel, Jezebel remained an idolater serving Baal and influencing Israel to do so.  She was a very wicked Queen that did not FEAR God but worshiped idols.  She had 400 prophets of groves, which ate at her table at 450 prophets of Baal.  In 1 Kings 21:5-16, Jezebel is seen as an oppressor, a dictator, having no value for men’s life.  In a bid to make her husband, King Ahab, happy, she master-minded the execution of an innocent and helpless man, Naboth.  She exacted authority that did not belong to her, sharing the throne of the king by abusing the office.  She slayed the prophets of God, thereby forcing Prophet Elijah into self-exile, 2 King 9:7, and she was at her death, called a cursed woman, 2 Kings 9:34. Unlike her husband, Ahab, who humbled himself in fast and sackcloth upon hearing God’s verdict, there is no record of her penitence and repentance. In 1 Kings 21:5-13, Jezebel seem to be a caring wife who could understand her husband’s countenance/mood, that he had not eaten and actually comforted him, but in mischief. She had the option of encouraging her husband to accept Naboth’s refusal in good faith, but rather she conceived and hatched the plot to execute Naboth.  She was an evil advisor.   What does the text teach us about being unequally yoked together with unbelievers? 1 Kings 21:25; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 The above scriptures are clear on this, as Apostle Paul was emphatic on it. Solomon, the Wisest Man, July 10th, 2016

  Solomon, the Wisest Man     Central Thought: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.   Hymn: “Christian, Seek Not Yet Repose” Text: John 19:1-18, 20:7-9; 1 Corinthians 15:3-5     Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived. His father was Kind David; he was the third king of Israel.  God gave him an unsurpassable wisdom.  His name, Solomon, means God’s peace, He was really loved by god from childhood, 2 Samuel 12:24-25.  When God gave him opportunity to make a request of anything he needed at the beginning of his reign as king, he requested for Wisdom and a discerning heart.  God was pleased with him and granted his request alongside great riches and power.  He rose to fame with his first judgment in a dispute between two women who claimed to be mothers of one child, and the building of the first temple in Jerusalem. Solomon was renowned for his God given wisdom, writings and wealth. He maintained most peaceful relationships with his neighbors in his forty years reign as king of Israel.  He was credited with writing Ecclesiastics, Proverbs, and the Song of Songs (Song of Solomon).  His undoing was his lust for women and the pride of life.  He married so many foreign women from pagan nations of whom the Lord had instructed the children of Israel not to marry their women nor give their daughters in marriage to their men.  These strange women turned Solomon’s heart from following the Lord.  In this study, we shall consider the rise and fall of this wisest man that ever lived.     Lesson Objectives: To understand what Solomon did that attracted response. To note the challenges posed to us by Solomon’s life. To understand how Solomon utilized his God-given wisdom. To identify what led to Solomon’s fall and guard against it.   1A. What did Solomon do that attracted God’s attention and what was God’s response? 1 Kings 3:3-5 When the kingdom of Israel was firmly established in the hand of Solomon as promised by god, he whole heartedly loved God and continued in the footsteps of his father David. In appreciation to God for establishing him as king over Israel, he went to Gibeon to offer sacrifice to God.  He offered a thousand burnt offerings unto God; for which God was pleased and in response, God appeared to him and give him opportunity to ask for whatever he wanted God to do for him.   1B. Analyze Solomon’s request and God’s reply to it, noting the condition attached. Being a young man, Solomon considered himself un-equipped to rule as King over Israel, a people he considered as great and too numerous to number. So He asked God for a discerning heart to be able to distinguish between right and wrong.  God considered Solomon’s request, unselfish but a demonstration of integrity of heart and God promised to give him what he asked for and much more, including wealth, honor and long life, if only he would continue to walk in the ways of the Lord and obey all His statutes and commands as his father David did.  God fulfilled His promise and Solomon became the wisest, wealthiest and most honorable king in Israel’s history.  He was glad and offered burnt offering and...

The Fruitful Life, July 3rd, 2016

The Fruitful Life     Central Thought: A flourishing Christian life is dependent on abiding in Christ.   Hymn: “I am Thine, O Lord” Text: John 15:1-17     Our LORD JESUS CHRIST used everyday happenings and situations to illustrate very lofty spiritual truths. The agrarian society of Jesus’ day had very good knowledge of the vine and its branches, and the farming techniques usually adopted by the vine dresser to optimize the production capability of the vine. This illustration of the vine and the branches reveals the secret of fruitfulness in the life of a believer. It also indicates that the LORD detests unfruitfulness in the life of a believer.  It also indicates that the LORD detests unfruitfulness in the life of any believer.  Essentially our Lord makes us to realize that stagnation in any sphere or our endeavors runs contrary to His will.  It is not spirituality to remain at one level of development in our professional educational careers for many years, hiding under the cover that it is one’s cross. This illustration also makes us to realize that we just cannot live the Christian life without a deep and vibrant relationship with Christ. It will be no different from that of a fish attempting to live outside water.  Those who once were in Christ, and thought they had matured enough to live apart from Him know better now that it is just not possible.  Fruitfulness lies in keeping the vital link with Christ, strong and unbroken.     Lesson Objectives: To identify the vine, the branch, and the husbandman. To explain what fruitfulness means? To understand how to be fruitful. To appreciate what the Husbandman does to make the branch more fruitful. To know the consequences of being detached from the vine.   What is illustrated by the vine, branched and husbandman? Jesus, being the narrator in John 15:1 affirms that He is the true (real, genuine) vine. It is significant that Jesus uses the adjective “true” to describe the kind of vine that He represents.  He knew that his audience was aware that there are wild species of vines which produce bitter grape juice.  The true vine which produces sweet and refreshing fruit is the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus made it clear to His audience, comprising His disciples, that they are the branches. “I am the vine; you are the branches”, John 15:5a.  Every believer who has come into a saving relationship with Christ by faith in His finished work at Calvary is branch of the true vine.  Because no branch of a tree can exist on its own, so it is that the vital life of the believer is sustained only when he is in lively union with Christ. The husbandman, or the vine dresser, or the gardener, is our Father in Heaven. He uses the angels to tend the branches so that they can produce optimally.  The Father does not experience any lapse from the true vine, Jesus Christ, and so His primary focus is on the branches which have to be carefully nurtured so that they do not ever get to be unfruitful.   What does it mean to be fruitful? The Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ, October 30th, 2016

The Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ     Central Thought: Those who allow the Lord to reign in their lives now will reign with Him during the millennium.   Hymn: “There is a Land that is Fairer than Day” Text: Revelation 20:1-15     The word millennium is derived from two Latin words, ‘mille’ – meaning a thousand and ‘annus’ – meaning year. Millennium therefore means a thousand years and the millennial reign of the LORD Jesus Christ refers to the period of one thousand years when the LORD will reign physically over all the nations of the earth with His headquarters in Jerusalem. The millennial reign will be preceded by some vents revealed in the Scripture. These events include the rapture, the great tribulation, the judgement of the believers for rewards, the marriage super of the Lamb, etc. The hope of every Christian is to be with the LORD and to reign with Him in millennial splendor. When a Christian is going through trial, part of their sustaining joy emanates from the confidence in the promise of the LORD that He is coming back again to rule on the earth for a thousand years with His saints. However, to be able to reign with the Lord during the millennium, the Christian should have lived consistently for the Lord on the earth in righteousness and holiness.     Lesson Objectives: To explain the meaning of millennium and the millennial reign of Christ. To highlight some of the events that will precede the millennial reign of Christ. To know the purpose of the millennial reign of Christ. To understand what will characterize the millennium. To know that the saints will reign with Christ during the millennium.   What does the ‘millennium’ and the ‘millennial reign of Christ’ mean? The word millennium as earlier stated is derived from two Latin words: ‘mille’, meaning a thousand years, and ‘annus’ meaning year. Millennium therefore means a thousand years.  The millennial reign of Christ refers to the period of one thousand years when the LORD will physically rule and reign over the nations of the earth with His headquarters established in Jerusalem.  In Scripture this period is also variously referred to as the dispensation of the fullness of the times.  Ephesians 1:10; the day of the Lord, Isaiah 2:11, 19:21; Ezekiel 39:22.  The world age to come, Matthew 12:32, Mark 10:30.  The regeneration, Matthew 19:28.  The times of the restitution of all things, Acts 3:20-21, and the Kingdom of His Dear Son, Colossians 1:13; 2 Peter 1:11. The millennium will be between the Second Advent and the New Heaven and New Earth. The millennial reign will be literal and earthly, Isaiah 9:6-7; Daniel 2:44-45.  The reign will be a world-wide theocratic government.  All the raptured saints will join the LORD in this reign as they will return with the LORD at the Second Advent.   What are some of the events that will precede the millennial reign of Christ? The Marriage of the Lamb     Central Thought: Keeping our garments spotless before God guarantees our participation in the marriage feast of the Lamb.   Hymn: “When the Trumpet of the Lord Shall Sound” Text: Revelation 19:1-10; Matthew 25:1-13     The Church comprises a people who have been called out from the life of sin and the influence of the kingdom of darkness, into a life of righteousness and the kingdom of the Son of God. To restore the original plan of God for humanity which is that man should have unbroken fellowship with God, this marriage of the Lamb establishes this unbroken fellowship, since the church shall by the marriage be in an eternal union with Christ.  The marriage supper of the Lamb is thus, an event at which all believers of all ages, races, languages, and in all continents will be joined in marriage to Christ who is the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world. With the marriage of the Lamb at which only those whose garments (hearts) are washed by the blood of Jesus will be allowed to participate thereof. There is the need for believers who want to be a part of the marriage supper of the Lamb to ensure that their lives are kept pure and in a good state to receive the bridegroom.  Such preparations will include being vigilant in prayers, abstaining from anything which defiles, and actively serving the Lord in His vineyard. The marriage supper of the Lamb is the glorious hope which propels the believer in his walk with the Lord.     Lesson Objectives: To have an understanding of the marriage feast of the Lamb. To know those who are invited to the marriage feast. To know when this marriage feast will take place. To know those who qualify to be a part of the marriage feast. To understand what the marriage supper of the Lamb is intended to achieve. To emphasize the personal preparations required for the feast.   What is the marriage feast of the Lamb? Over many centuries of man’s existence on this earth, there are individuals who have distinguished themselves in their walk with God. They have lived godly lives, abstained from evil, and honored God by their lifestyle.  Up till this moment, there has never been an occasion of meeting by this multitude of faithful believers.  At the marriage feast of the Lamb, such a meeting shall take place.  At that feast, the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Israel, will fellowship with the Prophets, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Ezekiel and others, the first century saints, Peter, Paul, John and others, and with the saints of our contemporary times.  At this great feast, a union will take place between all saints and the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.  What a great union that will be?  It will be a union that will restore the original plan of God for humanity which is that there should be an unbroken fellowship between man and God.   Who are those that are invited to the marriage feast?
