Tenets of the Christian Faith, Part 1   Central Thought: The articles of the Christian faith are simple, scriptural and for all times.   Hymn: My Hope is Built on Nothing Less. Text: 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Jude 3-4; Psalm 119:1-8 The Christian faith is essentially on God’s relationship with humanity, and it is as old as creation. Man is his existence has passed through several stages of relationship with God.  From his sinless state of innocence, through the fall to the era of the law and the dispensation of grace, there are eternal truths that has always been cardinal about God, His creations and His relationship with man.  Every generation that walked successfully with God knew them and held them very dearly. Today there is a clarion call on the church to preserve and uphold these treasured truths in the face of massive satanic error and propaganda against them. The propaganda is aimed at deceiving and destroying the human race. The Christian articles of faith are simple and apply to all ages. The word of God is the solid base upon which such articles are built, being immutable and eternal. In the first of this two-part study we shall examine some of these principles, the way they are presented in the scriptures under the title, ‘Tenets of the Christian Faith’. What does it mean to be a Christian? 2 Corinthians 5:17 A Christian is someone who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ, and whose life is based on the Bible as a sacred Scripture. It is beyond the name you bear, or the family background of an individual or the general religious inclination of a geographical area or community.  Christianity is actually on the personal encounter with Jesus Christ, creating a consciousness that ushers in conversion, inner peace and true fellowship with God.  Of necessity, he becomes an active member of the church of God, the Body of Christ! Explain the term ‘Tenets of the Christian Faith’. A tenet is a principle, belief or doctrine generally held to be true, and accepted by members of an organization. The tenets of the Christian faith refers to the body of truths accepted and upheld by scriptural patriarchs, apostles and church fathers about God, His creations and His relationships with them, including mankind.  It is the Christian belief system whose articles, processes and provisions are bible-based, and by them a believer in Christ is properly instructed and guided in his daily quest to live a life that is pleasing and acceptable unto God. Discuss the tenets of the Christian faith as it relates to God, Jesus Christ and mankind. A. On God: The Christian faith teaches that God is the unique Supreme Being. He is eternal, immortal, omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient.  His throne is in heaven and His presence fills the entire creation.  Idols and images are not of God and they are not agents of God.  He created everything for His divine pleasure. B. On Jesus Christ: John 1:1-3, 1 Corinthians 15:3-5 The Christian faith professes the deity of Jesus Christ. Breaking New Grounds, Part 2     Central Though: The Lord will give us the desires of our heart as we delight in Him.   Hymn: My Faith Looks up to Thee Text:  Genesis 26:1-25     A reflection on Psalm 1 expounds the blue-print for success to every believer in Christ Jesus.  There is need to trust God for ideas to do what has not been done before, or what has been done but in a different and better way; this applies in business, academics, career, church, and other areas of endeavor The Lord Jesus enjoins each believer to occupy till He comes.     Lesson Objectives: Highlight the lessons to be learned from the life of Isaac. State the hindrances to breaking new grounds. Identify possible areas we can break new grounds and know the benefits of breaking new grounds.     Highlight the various lessons we can derive from the man Isaac in the text. Genesis 26:6, 12, 22, 25 There are a lot of lessons we can derive from Isaac’s life.  The following are some of them. Isaac listened and obeyed divine instruction: verse 2 and 6.  God disrupted his journey plans and instead of going down to Egypt, he stayed in Gerar following God’s instructions. Many times, we are too busy to hear what God is saying to us.  Some other times, we have an already made up mind set, and would want God to rubber-stamp or sanction our decisions, whether they are in His will or not.  As Christians, our minds must be free to yield to the Lord, whether God’s decision pleases us or not, whether it is convenient or not.  We must be open to take and follow God’s directives obediently.  We have no record of Isaac disobeying; rather he refrained from going down into Egypt in absolute obedience. In obeying the Lord, we must come to a level, where we surrender our will totally to God, both in little and great things.  These include our Christian walk, business, career and everything that concern us. Isaac lied with regards to his relationship with Rebekah. It was however doubt/lack of faith in God’s ability to save and preserve his life that Isaac had to lie as seen in verse 7.  We must know that God is able to save and keep that which is committed into His hands, 2 Timothy 1:12.  Moreover, when the ways of a man please the Lord, He makes his enemies to be at peace with him, Proverbs 16:7; this was the case with Isaac.  We must endeavor to let our ways please the Lord, and the Lord will take care of our enemies. In verse 8, Isaac was seen sporting with Rebekah his wife.  Amplified version and some others put it as, “…saw Isaac caressing Rebekah his wife”.  It is safe to conclude that Isaac played his part as a husband by meeting his wife’s emotional needs.  Christian husbands should not be too spiritual not to meet the emotional needs of their wives, vice versa.  This is the cause of most marriage failures in the church today.  Christian couples should take pride in each other, everywhere and every time. Breaking New Grounds, Part 1   Central Though: The believer is to display skill or power by the Grace of God.   Hymn: Rock of Ages, cleft for me. Text:  Genesis 26:1-25     Our desire for advancement and breaking new grounds in our personal, family and business lives is proper and legitimate.  This is God’s will not only for believers but for the entire human race.  This is contrary to the belief of some Christians that the call to serve the Lord, which makes them conscious of heaven, excludes the Christian from the world and its activities. John 17:11-16 says we are in the world, but not of the world, but not of the world.  Though we live in this world, we do not pttern our life style after the manner of this world like the unbelievers. Hence, the child of God must strive not only to grow spiritually but also for mastery in all endeavors by godly means.  While in this world, we must excel in our secular jobs as this brings honor to God.  The call to Christianity therefore, is not a call to timidity or mediocrity as some people think, but to display eminent skill or power by the grace of God. God has given us the blue-print for success in His word.  In this study, we shall be using the life of Isaac to discuss how we can break new grounds spiritually and materially.     Lesson Objectives: The meaning of the phrase, ‘breaking new grounds’. Identify the challenges Isaac encountered in Gerar. Appreciate the place of persistence in breaking new grounds.     What do you understand by the phrase, ‘breaking new grounds’? Genesis 26:1-25 Breaking new grounds connotes doing something new, something that has not been done before or doing what has already been done in a new way.  It is achieving what looks ordinarily impossible or difficult.  It entails succeeding where others have failed, become a high flyer in life.  It may also mean removing the barriers of progress and making advances in life.  It might start small, but do not despise the days of small things, Zechariah 4:10; for though the beginning be small, the latter end shall greatly increase, Job 8:7. In the above text, Isaac was a stranger in Gerar but he sowed in the time of famine following God’s instruction and reaped a hundred-fold (verses 12-14).  In the context of our discussion, Isaac broke new grounds and did not experience famine.  He sowed and with God’s favor, he reaped a hundred-fold. As Christians, we must be seen doing something, i.e. engaged in a profitable business or venture.  For God will only bless the work of your hands (Deuteronomy 28:12, 30:9), but where there is no labor there is nothing for God to act on and bless.  We must look beyond the prevailing circumstances, hindrance and limitation, to do something for god to bless   What was the prevailing challenge Isaac faced? Genesis 26:1-2 The prevailing condition where Isaac lived was famine and he went into Gerar in the land of the Philistines.  It appears that the famine also extended to Gerar and Isaac intended to Gerar and Isaac intended to go to Egypt but God instructed him to remain in Gerar.  It was not the first time...

Interceding for the Nation   Central Though: God will answer and heal our land if we faithfully intercede for our country.   Hymn: What a Friend we have in Jesus Text Daniel 9:1-27     To intercede means to act as a peace maker between persons, groups or nations.  In the context of this study, to intercede refers to the act of making earnest pleas to God on behalf of the nation.  It includes realizing that the nation has fallen short of God’s standard or expectation and asking God to have mercy. It should be said that only people who know God and belong to Him are qualified to intercede. The examples of people recorded in the Bible who interceded show that they are those who know God and appreciate the value of intercession or prayer to God on behalf of the people.  People of God like Moses (Numbers 14:11-20), Ezra (Ezra 9:1), Esther (Esther 4:12-17), Daniel (Daniel 9), and others were notable intercessors in their days.  Jesus Christ interceded for the Church (John 17) and His ministry of intercession continues for ever (Hebrews 7:25). It is only pertinent to say that a major duty of every child of God is to intercede for the nation.  The purpose and importance of intercession are clearly spelled out in 2 Chronicles 7:13-14.  God will surely intervene in any unpleasant situation in our nation if Christians will intercede faithfully.  National calamity, catastrophe, epidemics and even war can be averted when the children of God pray to God in faith and with earnestness.  In interceding for the nation, we are in essence praying for all sorts and conditions of people in our land.     Lesson Objectives: To explain the meaning of intercession. To appreciate the importance of interceding for the nation. To identify the qualifications of an intercessor. To identify the hindrances to effective intercession and how to overcome them. To develop a consistent life of intercession.     What do you understand by intercession? Intercession means pleading the case of someone before another with the intent of obtaining favor making peace.  In the context of our study, intercession would mean making a plea to God on behalf of a person, group or nation.  Anyone who pleads on behalf of another is interceding for that other person.  In 1 Timothy 2:12, intercession is mentioned as one of the ways of talking to God on behalf of all men.  A priest is a type of intercessor since he pleads for the people before God.  Jesus Christ who is our great high priest is the greatest intercessor both while He was on earth and even now, ‘since He always lives to make intercession for those who draw near to God through Him’, Hebrews 7:35.  In his time, Daniel interceded for the people of God with regard to what God had said to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nation of Israel.  We too can be intercessors in our time concerning the issues that plague man in our world.   Why is it important to intercede for the nation? 2 Chronicles 7:14; Proverbs 14:34; 1 Timothy 2:1-4 Praying or interceding for the nation can bring about God’s forgiveness, healing and peace to the people.  Intercession can cause righteousness to reign in the land.  This will make...

Pastor Appreciation Central Thought:  The Importance of Appreciating our Pastors   Text: Ephesians 4:11-12, Jeremiah 3:15, Hebrews 13:17   The Lord has put in our midst mighty men and women of God who will pastor us, teach us, rebuke us, guide us and lead, Ephesians 4:11. It is very important to appreciate these men and women of God because they were hand-picked by God Himself. These Pastors are filled by the Holy Spirit and are equipped vessels of God. We must keep in mind, a man or woman Pastor has been chosen by God Himself for the purpose of preaching, teaching and leading God’s sheep. For this reason we must appreciate them because of the One who chose them. God’s chosen are to be held up in high regards because those vessels have a very important role to play in Christ’s plan for our lives. These Pastors also have to live a life that is totally sold out to Christ because it is from Christ that they receive their power. These Pastors have dedicated lives geared to serve the Lord, Titus 1:6-9. A Pastor must be a servant who has unquestionable integrity and is above reproach, the husband of one wife. They must be stewards of God, blameless, not self-willed or arrogant. Not quick tempered or drunkards. They must be loving, devout, temperate, and must make sure he or she is teaching the word of God correctly. The words they preach should stimulate us, encourage us, and at times discipline us. A true Pastor will also pray and fast for the benefit of the sheep. Pastors should always reflect Christ because it is Christ who strengthens them. Pastor’s give much of their time and efforts to their congregation, family members, etc. Pastors in many ways are our spiritual parents who will love, guide and discipline us, Hebrews 12:11.  1. Why is it important to appreciate of Pastors? It is very important that we give appreciation to our Pastors because they are responsible for us like parents are to their children. We must always recognize the role that they play, was given to them from Christ. Pastors teach and preach instructions from God to help us get through our daily lives. The Lord made them stewards over us. Because we are children of God and fear the Lord, we should also in reverence, fear our Pastors, Psalm 89:7, Proverbs 9:10, Psalm 34:11. Just like a parent is responsible for their children, so is the Pastor to its sheep. This is not an easy task and commands a large amount of discipline and sacrifice, Philippians 2:3-4. To be a Pastor takes much discipline which at times is painful but later yields fruits of righteousness. Pastors spend much of their days studying, praying and fasting. Which at times takes away from the things that they enjoy such as their families and friends. A Pastor must constantly stay in the word of God so that they are not teaching a false message. They must live what they preach, 1 Corinthians 9:27. This may sound like an easy task but it is not. A Pastor puts the needs and wants of others in front of his own.
