The Manifestation of God’s Power – Part 1, Signs and Wonders, May 10, 2015

The Manifestation of God’s Power – Part 1, Signs and Wonders Central Thought:  God’s will is that believers in Him will manifest His power to bring glory to His Name. Text:  Acts 3:1-16; Mark 16:15-18; Luke 10:19   God has always been interested in man’s welfare.  Hence at the conclusion of creation, He handed over the entire ecreation to man and delegated to him authority (power) over creation, commanding him to have dominion over the earth and to subdue and replenish it, Genesis 1:26-28. When man sinned and lost that authority, GOD put in place an arrangement whereby the lost authority will be restored to man.  Through the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of the LORD JESUS, man’s redemption was accomplished.  Anyone therefore who believes in the LORD JESUS experiences salvation from sin and its consequences and they are restored into fellowship with GOD who delegates His authority (power) to him again as His representative on earth. GOD’s plan therefore is to manifest His power through the believer in many ways for the erring world to see and repent.  GOD’S power can be manifested by the believer through signs and wonders.  His power can also be manifested in the expression of love and unity by believers towards each other.  GOD’s power can also be expressed or manifested by the believer in holy living. This first part of this series of lessons on “Manifestation of GOD’s power” (drawn from Acts chapters 3 to 5) focuses on manifesting His power in signs, wonders and miracles.   What do you understand by power in this context and who is to manifest it? Power as used in the context of this lesson refers to supernatural power, that is the power that comes from GOD.  We read in Matthew 10:1, “And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.”  Also it is recorded in Luke 10:19, “Behold I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”  Mark 16:17-18 declares expressly, “And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.”  The LORD JESUS while on earth demonstrated GOD’s power for all to see, He healed the sick, cast out devils, raised the dead, fed the hungry, opened the eyes of the blind, the ears of the deaf, etc.  He also empowered His followers to exercise the same power and authority from GOD as revealed in the Scriptures above.  Thus GOD has delegated to the believer power, authority, and dominion over nature.  By that power, the believer can change the course of nature and by that God-given authority, ha can bring out supernatural intervention in the affairs of men.  This has always been God’s desire for His children. A Closer Walk with God, May 3, 2015

A Closer Walk with God    Central Thought:  God’s desire is that we walk closely with Him.   Text:  Genesis 3:3-8, 5:24; John 13:21-26   Perhaps one of the greatest privileges anyone can have is to walk with God.  Men and women of God across generations, past and present; that made genuine marks in the work of God always had this testimony that they WALKED with Him.  It involves a relationship with God the Father – as was Adam and Enoch, Genesis 3:8-11, 5:24; The Lord Jesus, as with John the apostle, John 13:23; and FELLOWSHIP with the Holy Spirit, 2 Corinthians 13:14 and Philippians 2:1.  A closer walk with God therefore entails a deeper realm and dimension of this relationship with the Godhead (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). Today the need for the call to a closer walk with God has become increasingly imperative.  This is because the increasing rate at which Christians see to be vulnerable to the same “plague” their unbelieving counterpart are subjected has become worrisome.  The covenant of blood, “. . . and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. . .” Exodus 12:13, that captures the provision for our total protection sees not to be in force for very any individual Christians and congregations.  Resorting to half truths and all other unwholesome methods to secure relief and later brand them as miracles are ephemeral – they will not last.  We must return back to God. Therefore this study seeks to help us return to the pathway of closely walking with God on a sustainable basis.   What does the phrase “A closer walk with God” mean? The phrase immediately suggests that there is a GAP between where we are currently and where we ought to be in matters of godliness.  For example: (a) a Christians that claims to be born again and is still living actively in sin has a clear gap to fill; (b) a Christian that has been saved and refuses to go for water baptism by immersion has an obvious issue with God; (c) after water baptism, a Christian that refuses to seek the baptism in the Holy Ghost has a very dangerous gap to fill; (d) the “tongue talking” Christian that is not evangelizing is not wise and unproductive; and (e) the “tongue talking” Christian that cannot demonstrate both the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit is empty spiritually and carnal.  The phrase also suggests that after identifying ones true position, relative to where we ought to be, that we go to God in very sincere cry of ardent desire to return back to Him, Philippians 3:13-14.   How do we sustain/maintain a “closer” walk with God? You cannot be close to someone you do not know. -The first step is having a very personal knowledge of God through the born again experience enshrined in the salvation plan of God.  This involves being decisive in putting away old life, living a new one in Christ, that has the genuine fruit of sustained holiness and practical commitment to the propagation of God’s interest on earth.  That admits you into the family of God, Colossians 1:12-14; –Fellowship with God.  While this can be as dramatic as the physical interactive presence of god, which was...

The Family that Prays Together          Central Thought:  The presence of God is guaranteed in a family that prays together.        Text: Joshua 24:15; Matthew 18:18-20; Genesis 18:19; Amos 3:3; James 5:16   One of the real challenges that we often find in our contemporary, busy lives is finding time to be together as a family.  It is especially difficult to find opportunities to pray together.  Our Father in Heaven wants us to have strong, loving families.  One of the great helps He has given us to achieve this is the family prayer. All of us, single or married, are eternally part of some family, someway, somewhere, somehow and much of our joy in life comes as we correctly recognize and properly develop those family relationships.  God has placed us in families, where we can learn to overcome selfishness, pride, sacrifice for others, and make happiness, helpfulness, humility and love the very essence of our character. We learn that friends and neighbors come and go but the family remains and as we learn this, we find that we are our brother’s keeper.  We need to thank God for the opportunity of family prayer.   What do you understand by the phrase, “The family that prays together”? This means a family that has a regular time to pray and study the Bible together.  In 1 Timothy 3:5 we read, “if anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?”  Managing your family is caring for each member, teaching them God’s way, leading them to grow in the Lord, and equipping them for adult life.  Prayer is important in achieving all of these.  A family with a heart of prayer for each other will have a heart of prayer for the world. Family members should have a time to share their joys and burdens together, Galatians 6:2   What is involved in praying together as a family? -Having a regular prayer altar:  A place of bible study and worship time: A family should have a regular time to pray and read the Bible together; this should be taken seriously and practiced routinely.  It helps in bringing up children in the way of the Lord. It is well to remember the great command that the Lord gave to Israel. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when you walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up”, Deuteronomy 6:4-7. Worship of the Lord is first of all vertical and then horizontal and begins in the home and takes in the whole family.  Where is your family altar?  Where is that place you meet with God daily as a family? -Setting a time for fasting and praying for a purpose.  Ezra 8:21-23; Joel 2:12:  Families may decide to fast and pray for a particular purpose, without hatred, enmity, jealousy, pride and unforgiveness among them. ...

The Believer’s Identity, Part 2   Central Thought:  How we live our lives as believers, depend greatly on our knowledge of who we are in Christ Jesus.   Text: 1 John 3:1-3; 1 Peter 2:5-12; Romans 8:17     Believer’s identity stems from Christ Jesus who has given us a glorious and exalted position in God.  Christ’s name stands for authority, identity, honor and character.  The Bible, God’s word, is full of declarations concerning believers in Christ which are expected to conform to some expected lifestyle, disposition, actions and conduct.  When these expectations are fulfilled, the Godhead is glorified.  For instance, the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch, Acts 11:26.  The brethren in Antioch were identified as Christ-like because they conformed to the lifestyle of the Lord Jesus Christ.  It was obvious that the people in Antioch observed the style of living among the believers n Christ, completely conforming or tallying with the lifestyle of Jesus Christ their Master and Mentor.  Therefore they were nicknamed “Christians”; that is Christ-like. The believer’s identities are declared by the Godhead in the Holy Scriptures.  Knowing God is a prerequisite for knowing who you are in this world and in the world to come.  Knowing God makes you obedient to His word and qualifies you to identify with His character which is your inheritance in the Lord Jesus Christ.  In this study, we shall examine a few of such identities which distinguish us from unbelievers.     Explain the meaning and discuss the implications of the following identities of the believers in Christ Jesus – Priest of God, Member of the Body of Christ, Bride of Christ, and Friend of God. – Priest of God – 1 Peter 2:5, 9: A Priest of God is the believer in Christ who offers praises and spiritual sacrifices to God, and intercedes to God, and intercedes on behalf of the people of God.  He is to give direction to the people on how to reach God through the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the only way. “But yea re a chose generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light”, 1 Peter 2:9. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, the priest of God receives empowerment for his ministry and then gives direction to others on tap from the same source of empowerment and strength.  A priest must not be found wanting.  He must offer up spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. -Member of the Body of Christ – 1 Corinthians 12:12-27; Romans 12:5: Just as the human body is made up of many parts functioning harmoniously together to make a complete body, so is the church, the body of Christ, made up of many functional parts who have truly accepted the Lord Jesus as personal Lord and Savior.  “Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it”, 1 Corinthians 12:27. Being a son of God, you are privileged to call God, Abba Father, my heavenly Father.  When you remember this always, it should elicit a high sense of humility in your heart and cause you to live a lifestyle that is consistent with the heritage of sonship and replicate the character of God in your life.  You must also abstain from sins and sinful habits as God’s character does not condone such. A. Servant of God – Romans 1:1, 6:22; Mark 10:43-44: Being a servant of God is one of the greatest identity of a believer in Christ.  It is a divine privilege to be called a servant of God.  From Mark 10:43-44, Servant of God is the position of greatness in the kingdom of God.  It is most rewarding, if all believers have servant hearts so that we can be of benefit to one another.  Today’s church needs more servant-leaders than bosses, in order to promote oneness, unity and teamwork in God’s vineyard.  Servanthood will enable us to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ Jesus, Ephesians 5:21 B.
