Commitment In Service     Central Thought: God rewards faithful service.     Text: John 13:1-17; Luke 22:24-30     Commitment is an undertaking, promise or pledge to do something for somebody or a course.  Service is to attend to somebody or something, work for, and perform duties and or being devoted to somebody or something. Commitment in service therefore is devotedly attending to the kingdom’s business in a manner of urgency as if the work could only be done by you to the exclusion of others without procrastinating.  It is the practical expression of our love for God and man.  When we serve willingly and wholeheartedly we prove our faith to the world around us.  This study will consider the Biblical mandate for service, identify areas or ways we can serve an highlight rewards for committed service.     1. What does the phrase “commitment in service” mean? At the point of giving one’s life to God, an individual covenants to serve God committedly.  To be committed in service, and individual is totally and completely sold out to God, with one singular desire, to do the will of the Master, John 4:34, 5:30; Psalm 40:8.  God at all times should be the center of our commitment and not man.  Commitment to God should not be because of a desired miracle after which the individual abandons or neglects God.  Commitment is doing for God the right thing, at the right time, undermining whether you are alone on the particular course and with no regards to personal convenience, comfort, denials and sacrifices. Commitment cannot be forced on any one.  It is a desire and act that flows from within, as a result of one’s love for God.  It is a test of the quality of love, affection, dedication, loyalty and genuineness of our faith in God.  The place of commitment is a place of sincerity with God and man, being devoid of all forms of eye service, Colossians 3:22-24.  Unlike Job (Job 2:3-6) and Abraham (Genesis 22:11-12) who passed their test of commitment and were approved of God, most present day Christians are carefree like the soldiers in Judges 7:3-5, who at a time of their test never recognized that their commitment was being tested.  Some Christians in like manner have disappointed God by being lazy and taking the things of God with levity, without commitment.  We must serve God with a perfect heart, 1 Chronicles 28:9, in love, Galatians 5:13, and in sincerity, Joshua 24:14.   2. Examine the ways Christ exemplified commitment in service while on earth. John 4:34; 9:4 Christ’s approach to commitment in service was in two major ways: He saw commitment in doing the will of the Father as mandatory, to be done, and carried out without an option or choice.  Christ, in equating commitment to food consumed by man for continuous sustenance, clearly showed that a believer needs to be committed to God to be spiritually healthy and alive just like natural food keeps man healthy and alive, John 4:34. The Watchful Christian     Central Thought: A watchful Christian is always prepared.     Text: Mark 13:32-37; Luke 12:15; Acts 20:28-31; 1 Corinthians 10:12; Romans 12:2, 13:11-14; 1 John 2:15-17; Matthew 25:1-3     To be watchful means to be alert, sober, careful, to be on guard, to be clear minded and examine things carefully before taking action.  The Scriptures repeatedly enjoin us to “watch!”, “take heed”, “be on guard”, and son on.  This is because we have an adversary who seeks to “steal, kill and destroy”, all that we are and have in Christ Jesus.  There would be no need for the warning if there were no risks of great harm befalling us if we behave otherwise.     1. Why do we need to be watchful? Luke 12:35-36; 2 Peter 3:10-14; Ephesians 5:25-27 It is for our good that the Lord enjoins us to be watchful.  We need to be watchful so that we do not lose the salvation we have received of God.  We live in perilous times, and the Scriptures warn that “the love of many will wax cold and many will fall away from the faith”.  It behooves the believer therefore to watch.  The Lord had emphasized the essence of living and warned that we “take heed and beware of covetousness”, because “a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesses”, Luke 12:15. Furthermore, the Lord is coming soon?  We do not know the hour he will come for a people without blemish.  Hence, we must make it our singular objective to please Him at all times and in all things.  We need to keep a close watch on our lives and doctrine so as to be acceptable to Him at His coming.   2. What are we to be on the watch against? a. Satan, 1 Peter 5:8 The devil does not want anyone to make eternity with God; seeking for whom to devour, he tries to hinder the believer from being watchful.  John 10:10 explains his aim.  This goes beyond the physical, he also targets the believer’s spiritual stand with God.  The devil uses people and devices, 2 Corinthians 11:14-15; 1 Timothy 4:1, e.g. false teachers, false doctrine, to weaken the believer’s faith.  Hence, we should be like the Berean Christians, Acts 17:10-11, study and rightly divide the Word of Truth, 2 Timothy 2:15. b. Sin, Ephesians 4:22, 3:7; Colossians 3:5-10; Galatians 5:19-21 Whatever is contrary to the Word of God is sin.  The believer must be careful of the times we live, wherein sin and sinners are celebrated while holy and righteous people are ridiculed.  Where civilization and “modern” Christianity have departed from the paths of holiness and righteousness.  We must remember that God and His standards are the same forever, and cannot be reduced to suit the convenience of any man, where “it does not matter” is the order of the day.  Scripture admonishes that, we be in the world but not of the world, 1 John 2:15.  Like Demas, some Christians have turned to the world, 2 Timothy 4:10.  We live in an era where pre-marital sex is condoned in the name of courtship, and in the name of joke, believers now tell lies, even use vulgar words with selfish ambition, etc.  Where...

It Is Good To Give Thanks Unto The Lord     Central Thought: Thanksgiving is appreciating GOD for His blessings.     Text: Genesis 4:2-7; Psalm 92:1-3; Luke 17:12-19     It is good to give thanks unto the Lord.  An act of thanksgiving from a recipient of a favor naturally gladdens the heart of the one who had demonstrated the act of kindness or favor.  It is really good and pleasing to give thanks unto the Lord, but our insatiable and greedy nature hardly allows us see reasons to give thanks to God.  Sometimes, we allow a seemingly unanswered prayer or unrealized ambition to becloud our brow.  When we realize that we exist by the grace of God, we will then understand that giving thanks to God is a necessity.  We do not favor to God when we give Him thanks. He does not need us to exist; but without Him, we cannot exist.  It behooves us therefore, to give Him thanks always for our existence.  Apart from this, there are innumerable reasons why we need to give God thanks; for example, the salvation of our soul, which also is a free gift from God.  The Scripture clearly made us to understand that everything that pertains to life and godliness have been given to us by God, 2 Peter 1;3.  That we are yet to access those things, should not be a reason why we should hesitate to give thanks to God for His goodness.  To refuse to give thanks to God is not only a sign of ingratitude by an act of wickedness.  In this study, we shall be discussing what thanksgiving is and its relevance in our Christian life.     1. What is thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is an expression of a good feeling for help or favor received; a grateful thought expressed orally or by action in relation to an occurrence; showing gratitude for mercy or benefit enjoyed.  It is also an expression of appreciation for an existing condition or privilege being enjoyed by someone.  Thanksgiving acts as an intuition to make people repeat or extend the scope of acts of kindness they have done.  It is a product of a merry heart.  Absence of thanksgiving can dampen the enthusiasm to show or continue to show kindness.  It testifies of the goodness of the person to whom it is directed.  Thanksgiving acts as a lubricant to the wheel of good relationship with God.   2. Why is it necessary to give thanks? Thanksgiving is necessary because it is God’s expectation from us, 1 Thessalonians 5:18.  If we consider it necessary to show appreciation for a kind gesture, to give thanks becomes imperative.  It is the will of God that we should give thanks always, and our obedience to the will of God increases our chances of obtaining His promises, Hebrews 10:36.  Thanksgiving sometimes gives us opportunity to grow in understanding the role of our faith in receiving blessings from God, Luke 17:16.   3. What are the features of an acceptable thanksgiving? Co-Workers Wanted, Part 2     Central Thought: There is an urgent call for workers in the Vineyard of God.     Text: Matthew 20:1-16; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9     The gospel message must go out because sinners will not know of God’s offer of salvation until they are told.  A lot of people are hungry for the gospel but the people to spread it are few.  The Lord says that the harvest is indeed plentiful but the laborers are few, Matthew 9:37. There will be a good reward for all who respond to the call of the Master and do the work with all diligence irrespective of the time spent in the work.  What matters is the spirit with which the assignment is carried out.   1. In what area can we work with God? There are many areas where we can serve God.  Such areas include: –Evangelism or Soul Winning:  Evangelism must be our supreme task as believers in Christ.  Evangelism is not for the ministers of God (Pastors or Evangelists, etc.) alone but for every true believer.  Every believer needs to be committed in this area of evangelism.  It is important to know that our employment or work with God is not for a few months or years but a life-long vocation.  God will not be happy with idle hands in His house.  His command to every one of us is: “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature”, Mark 16:15.  Only the faithful and obedient worker will be rewarded. -Another area that calls for dedication is “standing in the gap”.  Prayers are needed for the progress of the work of God.  God needs people to stand in the gap interceding so that His power can be released to save the lost in our generation.  Let God count on you in this area of intercession. –Giving in both cash and kind to the work of God and encouragement are areas where believers need to show commitment, Romans 12:8; Galatians 6:10.  Whatsoever area we find ourselves in the service of God, faithfulness, obedience and diligence are required.  Thus, whether we are in the choir, an usher, a teacher or even in cleaning of the church building, helps, exhortation or visitation of the sick or lonely; we must be diligent.   2. What should be the attributes or qualities of a co-worker? Everyone that has been called as co-workers must have qualities that would enable him do the work successfully.  These qualities may be summarized as follows: Obedience: Obedience should be in its completeness not as Saul who failed the test of destroying the Amalekites and incurred God’s wrath, 1 Samuel 15:1-23. But we should be like Peter who was sensitive to the voice of the Holy Ghost, and went without delay when he was sent to the house of Cornelius, an uncircumcised Gentile. Promptness: This could be seen in the response to call of discipleship by most of Jesus’ disciples.  Also, Peter’s mother-in-law who ministered to Jesus immediately she was healed of her sickness, Luke 4:38-40. Delay in carrying out God’s will could be counted as unwillingness.
