Call to Holy Living     Central thought: God commands His followers to live holy lives.     Text: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-7; 1 Peter 1:13-16,22     The command to live in holiness is given by God to everyone who has chosen to walk with Him.  God declares in His Word; “Be ye holy, for I am holy.”  Therefore, the issue of living a holy life is not optional to the believer neither is it negotiable but rather it is a normal way of life expected of anyone who has put his faith in the Lord. In the “hustle and bustle of life’, especially in modern times, many temptations are put on our path to lure us away from our noble desire of living in holiness to our God’s glory.  Attempts are made by the enemy to make us compromise our cherished biblical standards as regards the issues of life at home, school, offices, markets, business place, etc. However, it pays to remember always that holiness is central to our daily relationship with God.  Holiness is one of the attributes of God and this holy God has always demanded holiness in the lives of all who desire to follow Him.  The believer, therefore, must be resolved to pursue, keep and maintain a mindset of pleasing the Lord always.   1. What do you understand by holy living? Leviticus 20:26; Deuteronomy 23:14 In a very simple sense, holy living means a lifestyle that is committed primarily to pleasing God.  Such a lifestyle involves separation from the world and its ways and is wholly committed, consecrated and dedicated to God.  The individual who embraces holy living seeks only one end in life: that of pleasing God always.  Such a one declares with himself: “If God lives in me and He is holy, then I must allow Him work out this attribute of holiness in my life.” On the path of holy living, there is only one perfect example to follow and that is the Lord Jesus.  In all matters of doctrine/faith/belief, He remains ours standard. The more we look to Him and embrace His ways, the more we look like Him.  “. . . we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the LORD are changed into the same image from glory to glory even as by the Spirit of the LORD”, 2 Corinthians 3:18.   2. Is it possible to live a holy life in today’s world? Every era, period or civilization in world history, has always had its temptations, but each period also has its record of those who chose to be different by living for God.  In Noah’s days for example, people practiced wickedness and did what was evil continually in the eyes of the Lord, Genesis 6:11-12, but Noah chose to be different and found grace (favor) in GOD’s eyes.  In Lot’s days also, immorality had reached its peak with the general acceptance of homosexuality (the gay life) as a way of life, but Lot chose to be different as his righteous soul was vexed daily with the deeds of the people, 2 Peter 2:7-8.  Also, in the era of Daniel, government officials were corrupt but he refused to join them, Daniel 6:4-5, 24.  Although this brought him persecution, the LORD delivered...

Intimacy with God     Central thought: It is only those who worship God in Spirit and in truth that are true worshippers.     Text: Romans Leviticus 6:8-13:  Romans 12:1-2; John 4:23-24     Worship can be defined simply as an ardent devotion or reverential love and allegiance accorded a deity or a sacred object.  The Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator of heaven and the earth and all that dwell therein, Psalm 24:1, is the only One that deserves our worship.  He is the only one that we should worship.  “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and Him only shalt thou serve”, Matthew 4:10. Therefore, it is only God, the Creator of all, that qualifies to receive our worship.  As a matter of fact the Scriptures make us to understand this as recorded in Revelation 4:11, “thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created”.  It follows from this therefore, that the reason for our being is to offer acceptable worship to God our maker.  “O come let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker”, Psalm 95:6.  Worship is a reasonable service we must continually offer to God.  It must be rendered in such a manner that is acceptable to God for it to be a true worship.  It must be offered in spirit and in truth; sincerely from our hearts, without hypocrisy but in total allegiance to God.   1. What does worship mean? Psalm 141:2, 100:2, 95:6-7; 1 Chronicles 29:20; Genesis 18:2 Worship is an in-depth acknowledgement of the supremacy of God as the King of kings and Lord of lords.  It involves the submission of the totality of our spirit, soul and body to the Almighty God.  The period of worship in a Christian gathering is a time during which we must forget about ourselves and whatever situation that is confronting us and be fully focused on God.  He alone deserves our reverence, honor, and glory at all times.  When we come before God in worship, we should make ourselves open and ready to minister to Him and He will in return minister to us.  We must learn to approach God in absolute humility during worship. Worship has to do with bowing down, prostrating in humility to God to acknowledge His supremacy, sovereignty and might.  It also involves lifting up holy hands to God in surrender to His Lordship and Rulership over our lives.  It is a means of honoring God for who He is and what He has done in our lives.  Psalm 141:2 says, “Let my prayer be sent forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice”.  It is worship that ushers us into the presence of God in the place of prayer.  No wonder Psalm 95:6 has this recorded, “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our Maker”.   Thus worship is a vital aspect of our prayer.  Although the period of worship is not a time for rolling out a catalog of our requests, God may in His infinite mercies and grace decide to meet our...

Living in Union with Christ     Central thought: The union of man with Christ     Text: Romans 5:12-21; John 15:1-6     Living in union with Christ means identifying with Him in His crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection and glorification.  This is a part of the total redemption plan of God for mankind.  We enter into this union with Christ when we become born-again and do so by faith on the work of the cross, by grace and by His blood.  We are kept in this union by His power and the working of the Holy Spirit. This union enables us to enjoy the full blessing of sonship and to take a new place in God and in Christ.  It also gives a new hope of eternal life as we are now citizens of the kingdom of God.  In this union, we manifest the nature and glory of God and Christ.  We are enabled to live a life above sin, the devil and all his works.  A word of caution; all these could become impossible if we let in sin; for sin must not reign in our mortal bodies, Romans 6:12.   1. When do we enter into union with Christ? Our union with Christ begins at the new birth, that is, when we become born-again. The need for this union arose when the man, Adam, sinned and man became separated from God.  Ever since, every man that came into this world was born a servant of sin and of unrighteousness, Isaiah 53:6.  Because of this, man has no positive relationship with God, Isaiah 59:2, all attempts made by man to renew this relationship has never met with success, Isaiah 64:6.  It is like somebody inside a basket trying to raise him-self and the basket.  This is impossible?  God seeing this decided to send His Only begotten Son to rescue us from this terrible situation.  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. . . ”, John 3:16. When we believe on the Son of God, we enter into a new relationship with both the Father and the Son.  “But as many that received Him to them gave He power to become the sons of God . . . “, John 1:12.  We are given the right of sonship – we who were aliens and strangers to God, Ephesians 2:12.  This belief entails our confessing and receiving the forgiveness of our sins, 1 John 1:9.  Consequently, we can now have peace with God.   2. By what means do we enter into this union?  Titus 2:11-14; Romans 5:12-21 We enter into this union by faith, grace and His blood.  “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”, Hebrews 11:1.  By faith we appropriate the work of Christ on the cross to our own lives, we accept that our sins are forgiven and we have been accepted into the body of Christ.  Faith enables us to enter into the relationship of sonship and acceptance, Galatians 3:26.  We also believe that God is faithful to keep His own side of the covenant, 1 John 1:9. The Attributes of God     Central thought: Knowing God’s attributes strengthens the believer’s confidence in Him.     Text: Psalms 139:1-2; Job 34:21-22; Hebrews 4:12-13     Attribute can be defined as a quality or characteristic given, or regarded as a natural or typical part of a person that distinguishes him from his contemporaries.  The attributes of an individual are sometimes recognized from the proficiency with which he carries out his activities.  It brings out the peculiarities in its possessor. Discussing the attributes of God requires the understanding that God is a Spirit as opposed to natural beings.  His attributes are typically expressions of His being and they are inherent. God is unlimited by time, space and power.  His attributes include Sovereign, Immortal, Invincible, Wise, Holy, True, Omnipotent, Omnipresent, Omniscient, Eternal, Alpha and Omega, I am that I am (the Unchanging One), Ancient of days, King of Glory, Rock of Ages, etc.  Of all these attributes, we shall be discussing only three in this study, Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Omnipresent.  God is the supreme authority in Heaven and on earth and He alone is worthy of our worship.     1. Briefly discuss what you understand about the following attributes of God. a. Omnipresent: The word omnipresent refers to a state of being present everywhere at the same time.  This characteristic is commonly used in religious context and it is bestowed only on God.  With the full knowledge of God’s omnipresent nature, the Psalmist declared, “I can never escape from your (God) presence, I can never get away from you r presence”, Psalms 139:7.  In John’s gospel, Jesus (as God) demonstrated His attribute of Omnipresence when He said to Nathaniel “Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee”, John 1:48.  He already knew Nathaniel before the two met.  In Jeremiah 23:24, God said, “Can any hide himself in secret places that I should not see him?  Do not I fill heaven and earth?”  God, by this statement confirmed to the people of Jeremiah’s time that truly He is Omnipresent. b. Omnipotent: Omnipotent is defined as Almighty or infinite in power: having great or unlimited authority or power; all powerful; supreme or unrestricted ability.  This is what God is saying when He declared, “From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand.  No one can undo what I have done”, Isaiah 43:13.  Nebuchadnezzar declared of Him, “And all inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, what doest thou?”, Daniel 4:35. It is unthinkable to expect to see any human being who can manifest these attributes.  Of course, only the LORD GOD, who created the world out of nothing. c. Omniscient: Omniscient is the ability or capacity to know everything about all things.  ‘All knowing’ – including situations and circumstances; past, present and future; thoughts, feelings and character, having knowledge and foreknowledge of all occurrences.  God sees all things; even death and destruction hold no secret from Him, Hebrews 4:13.  God knows everything about all things.  He sees and knows all we think and do, though we sometimes...

Jesus: The Bread of Life     Central thought:  Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life that came down from heaven.     Text: John 6; 1 Corinthians 11:23-34     God created man and gave him an appetite for physical food which is satisfied by eating various kinds of food including bread.  Bread is a major staple food among the Jews even in the time of Jesus Christ.  Thus when Jesus performed the miracles of feeding five thousand men with five barley loaves and two small fishes, the people saw an answer to their food needs.  Consequently, the people followed Him wherever He went in large numbers not to listen to Him but to be fed with the miracle bread.  Thus when Jesus made it known to them that He is the Bread of life who they must eat to have life, they took offense.  But this is the truth!  The spiritual life can only be satisfied and sustained by eating the Bread of life.  The scripture expressly declare that Jesus is the Bread of life.  He is the Bread that came down from Heaven to make the will of God known to man.  This Bread of life is received by believing on Him, coming to Him with all our cares and identifying with Him.  Jesus as the Word must be eaten daily by reading, studying and meditating on the Word.  Life without the Bread of life is hopeless and set to ruin.  This Bread of life gives eternal life as he who eats of the flesh of Jesus and drinks of His blood receives eternal life.  The sharing of bread and the wine at communion commemorate His death till He comes.     1. What is the place of bread in human nourishment? Bread as a product of wheat flour is one of the major food items in quite a number of urban homes.  It is easy to handle, prepare and even consume.  It can be eaten by both the young and the elderly.  Because of its role in the human diet, food is often referred to as bread.  On a casual form, people at times refer to money as ‘bread’.  This underscores the importance of bread in hum existence of bread in human existence.  God in creating man gave him an appetite for food which can only be satisfied by taking in food substances (bread).  Life is uncomfortable once this appetite is not satisfied.  Persistent hunger which is not adequately satisfied results in malnutrition, disease and even death.  Thus no life can exist without food (bread).  This is because it serves both to nourish and build up the body of man.  The food we take produces the energy which keeps the body system functioning.  Hence without the taking in of food the body system will stop functioning and man is said to be dead.  Thus ‘bread’ helps to keep the human body functioning.   2. Who is the bread of life? When God formed man out of the dust, he was a lifeless object until God breathed into his nostril the breath of life, Genesis 2:7.  Thus the life in man is that of God.  Hence only God can give and sustain this life.  The breath of God also imparted to man His nature and spirit. ...
