CENTRAL THOUGHT Grace encompasses all the goodness, mercy, kindness, and love of God that we have received freely.   HYMN: AMAZING GRACE! HOW SWEET THE SOUND!   TEXT: Romans 8:1-17; Ephesians 2:1-9   INTRODUCTION Grace expresses the character of God to us in such a way that demands that we have a correct perspective of it or else make a blunder of it. Grace tells us that God loves us; has forgiven us our sins; is compassionate towards us; is kind toward us; has made provision in Christ for us to be free and liberated from sin and the power of the devil; that we are adopted as sons and daughters of God through faith in Christ; and that God is preparing a place as an eternal home for us. Grace goes further in telling us that though we do not deserve the love, mercy, kindness and goodness of God, they are nonetheless freely ours through faith in Christ Jesus. Our response to this grace of God determines who we are, how we live our lives and what we live for. At peak of material success, it is too easy to think it is because one has been smart and intelligent; at the height of spiritual victories and successes it is tempting to attribute them to the twenty-one-day continuous fast that one engaged in; In the depth of sin, it is tempting to continue in it, deriving the most from its pleasure, and comforting oneself that His grace covers every sin. One of the greatest ploys of the devil’s, for us to take God’s grace for granted. It is hoped that through this lesson, we will stand in awe of His grace as we live a life that far surpasses the letters of the law, and experience God’s provisions in many areas of our endeavors.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To have an understanding of the grace. To understand how God expresses His grace. To discuss how we should respond to the graces of God. To know the superiority of the covenant of grace over that of the law. To know how God’s grace enables us to fulfill His requirements for righteousness. To know how not to take the grace of God as a license for sin.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1 WHAT IS GRACE? Grace is divine favor received but not earned. The grace of God is clearly expressed in Romans 5:8- “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” As sinners we deserve the wrath and judgement of God, but grace made it possible for us to receive His pardon. Grace also expresses the kindness and mercies of God upon our lives that we never deserved. For instance, take an individual who gets afflicted with a disease which has claimed the lives of many individuals. With or without medication, he bounces back to good health. That is the grace of God. I could not have been because he had anything particularly different from what other persons who have been slain by the disease had. THE LAW AND GRACE (PART 1), July 7th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The law serves the primary purpose of directing the hearts of men to the Lord Jesus Christ to receive the grace of God.   HYMN: AMAZING GRACE! HOW SWEET THE SOUND!   TEXT: Galatians 4:1-10; Romans 4:1-18.   INTRODUCTION The eternal purposes of God cannot be fully comprehended by man; they can only be appreciated as they unfold. In God dealings with the nation of Israel, He started with Abraham, instructing him with one singular command: “leave your country, your people and your father’s household, and go to the land then I will show you” (Gen 12:1). Abraham’s obedience to that command was sufficient in giving birth to a nation. But as the nation grew in population and a civil society came into place, it became necessary to give the ten Commandments and other ordinances (the law) to regulate the religious, social, and economic aspects of the life of this nation. At the time of its enactment, the law showed the people how they should worship and serve God; how they should relate to their leaders; how they should relate to one another, and stipulate the consequences of flouting the law. The law certainly served a good purpose.  To Israel, obeying the law was supreme and constituted their entire obligation to God. The Jews could not imagine that it was only a stop-gap measure intended to serve a greater eternal purpose of directing men and women to the Lord Jesus Christ. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to our world and told the Jews that the purpose of the law what’s to school then to a knowledge of Him, the stumbled terribly. They simply fail to appreciate eternal plans of God. They rejected him as their messiah and killed him. Today, Jesus is alive with the same message that the law is fulfilled with him. People still stumble at the fact that is through faith in Christ the entire requirements of the law are met.         They charge that it is too simplistic; they think that to please God requires enormous human effort, which could entail inflicting pain on one’s body and be involved in some extraordinary activities. As Paul asserts, “such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence,” (Colossians 2:23).   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To have an understanding of the law. To explain the usefulness of the law to the nation of Israel under different circumstances. To discuss the qualities of the law. To know the weaknesses of the law. To know how Israel stumbled at the law. To know how to avoid the failure of the Jews.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT IS THE LAW? In the most restrictive sense, the law consists of the ten commandments which were given to Moses on Mount Sinai in a magnificent display of power in glory of God’s presence (Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 5:1-21). They represented this some and basis of the covenant relationship between Israel and God. CENTRAL THOUGHT Brokenness of spirit is essential in Christian living.   HYMN: ALL TO JESUS I SURRENDER.   TEXT: Psalm 51:1-19; Isaiah 6:1-8   INTRODUCTION Ordinarily, when something is broken, its value declines or disappears altogether; broken dishes, broken bottles, broken mirrors, broken glass etc. are generally scrapped.  However, it is so with regards to the spirit of man.  the Bible says, “…a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou will not despise”, Psalm 51:17.  Thus God puts a premium on a man with a broken spirit.  The man whose spirit is totally yielded and surrendered to God does not go un-noticed by God.  Such a man allows God’s Spirit direct his own spirit and his heart (attitude, lifestyle) is “tailored” in meekness and “laced” with humility. It must be noted that God is not usually pleased with outward actions if the heart is not right.  In our relationship with God, we all need to have this broken spirit, that is a heart that are yielded in total surrender to Him.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To understand what a broken spirit means. know how an individual may become broken in spirit. Examine some of the traits in the life of someone with a broken spirit. consider some individuals who showed brokenness in spirit. appreciate the benefits of having a broken spirit.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY A BROKEN SPIRIT?  PSALM 51:16-17 Man is made up of body, soul and spirit.  The body is the house of the soul and spirit and goes back to dust again at death (Genesis 3:19) and becomes immortal in the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:54-58.  the soul refers generally to the emotions, passions, feelings, desires and appetites of an individual.  the spirit of man refers to the intellect, will, mind, conscience and other invisible faculties that make him a free moral agent and rational being.  Both the soul and spirit of man are immortal. They are so closely related that it is difficult to bring out in fine details the differences between them.  Generally we can say that the spirits is that which knows and the soul is that which feels.  Thus the spirit of man determines who he is and reveals his real person to the world around him. The natural man manifests pride, arrogance, self centeredness, etc.  the desires of the flesh rules his spirit.  The spirit of the natural man is surrendered to the pursuit of selfish interests and the desires of the flesh to the detriment of his soul and body.  However, there is a difference in lifestyle when hat spirit becomes ‘broken’.  A broken spirit is oriented towards God and His ways.  Thus a ‘broken spirit’ describes the spirit of a man who has been transformed by the HOLY SPIRIT and is totally yielded to GOD.  The man with a a broken spirit submits his will to the will of GOD.  Humility/meekness characterizes the lifestyle of the man whose spirit is broken.  The spirit of such a man is surrendered to GOD and the HOLY SPIRIT puts HIS seal upon that man.   Q2. HOW DOES AN INDIVIDUAL BECOME BROKEN IN SPIRIT? Central Thought: The home of the believer should be a haven of peace.   Text: Colossians 3:12-13; Ephesians 5:25-31; Proverbs 31:10-27   Introduction: A home does not simply refer to a building or just a house.  We can define a house as a building to be inhabited by human beings.  While a home ca be said to be a house where people live together as a family and each of them has a sense of belonging and all are working towards making it a very conductive and peaceful habitation.  The home was the first institution established by God in the Garden of Eden.  A typical home is made up of the husband (who is the head of the home), the wife (who is the home builder), the children and others who may be staying there at any given point in time.  God’s expectations is that the members of the home will nurture it to become a delight to Him.  For this to be effectively achieved, God has assigned roles to every member of the home.  It is only in fulfilling our God-given roles that we can effectively turn our houses into homes into homes where God will be welcomed.  It will be a great honor and privilege on our part as believers if Christ finds our homes suitable for Him to visit.  Christ was a regular guest in the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus in Bethany (Luke 10:38-42; John 12:1-2).  In this study, we shall be considering the unique responsibilities of each member of the home and how they can through performing their various roles, make their home a place that others will look up uo as a model to emulate.   Lesson Objectives: 1. To know the people that make up a household. 2. To discuss God’s expectation for the Father, husband, in the home. 3. To discuss God’s expectation for the Mother, wife, in the home.   Bible Truth: 1. Who are the people that make up a household? A household is one made up of the man (husband/father), the woman (wife/mother), the children and others who may be living with them at any given point in time.  The fact that children have not yet been born by to a couples does not mean that theirs is not yet a home.  Children are God’s blessings and addictions to the home and arrive at God’s own time.  All members of the home are working together towards a common goal to make their household a place of joy and happiness.   2. What is God’s expectation for the father / husband in the home? God has a great expectation for the father / husband of the home.  His headship and leadership position in the home places a lot of responsibility on him.  It is only in the effective fulfillment of his God-given roles, that his household can be turned into a home.  These roles include among others the following: Quality Leadership (Genesis 18:18-19) – Husbands/Fathers should give quality leadership in their homes.  This authority was entrusted to them by God and it is their responsibility to account to God how they have led in their homes.  They must lead by examples.  The Bible tells us that the man is the head of the home.  The Christian man must have a...
