INQUIRE FROM THE LORD (PART 1), February 3rd, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT The believer who inquire from the Lord enjoys the benefit of being guided by God.   Text: 1 Samuel 23:1-12, 30:7-8; Numbers 27:1-7; Joshua 9:3-15   INTRODUCTION Anyone living in this world is confronted daily with the issues of life.  Some of these issues may be normal experiences of human beings while some occur suddenly or unexpectedly. Whether usual or unusual, many of these issues of life require decisions, actions to be taken and choices to be made.  It is at such moments that the limitation of man’s knowledge becomes evident.  Certainly, the knowledge of man is grossly limited concerning the past, present and future of both himself and the situations around him.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: Knowing what it means to inquire from the Lord. Understanding how to inquire from the Lord. Appreciating the importance of inquiring from the Lord. Recognizing some of the situations when we need to inquire from the Lord. BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO INQUIRE FROM THE LORD? Numbers 27:5 The word ‘inquire’ as defined in the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English means “to ask someone for information”.  On arriving to a city, a traveler may inquire or seek information from people in regards as to how he can get to his desired destination.  A student in a class may seek to know from his teacher the proper books he may need so as to excel in his study.  These examples appear simple and ready answers are available.  However, there are issues of life for which answers may not be readily available.  Also, in some of such situations answers based on man’s knowledge become inadequate and at times complicate matters when followed. The believer is therefore expected to cultivate the habit of inquiring from the Lord in all situations of life, inclusive of matters we consider simple or complex as human beings.  It is good for us to know His mind and follow it.  In Numbers 27:1-7, Moses was confronted with a situation in regards to the inheritance of  Zelophehad.  Zelophehad died without a son but he had daughters.  The daughters came to Moses to ask that the inheritance of their father be passed to them. This looked like a difficult request because by the law the inheritance was meant for sons.  The Scripture says, “and Moses brought their cause before the Lord”, Numbers 27:5.  Moses went to inquire of the Lord on what to do.  The Lord gave him an answer.  “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them”, Numbers 27:7. Therefore, to inquire from the Lord means asking the Lord for direction on what to do in a particular situation.  It involves seeking information from Him concerning a particular situation.  It also implies seeking His counsel on a particular matter.  Thus, the purpose of inquiring from the Lord is to receive guidance in regards to what to do in any situation.  Q2. How do we inquire form the Lord? Some of the ways we may inquire from the Lord include: Studying HIS word, the Holy Bible. CENTRAL THOUGHT To live victoriously and enjoy a fulfilled Christian life, the believer must persevere in prayers.   TEXT: Luke 18:1-8; 1Kings 18:41-46.   INTRODUCTION Prayer is very vital in indispensable in the life of every believer. It is essentially a means of communicating with God, and without prayer, the believer cannot live the successful and fulfilled Christian Life. It must be emphasized that we cannot run the Christian race successfully without being men and women of prayer. Hence, we must persevere in prayer. To persevere therefore in prayer, we must constantly be in direct communication with God at all times, in all places, in all circumstances, and in all situations. No wonder the Apostle Paul enjoins believers to pray without ceasing. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was a man of prayers and during his ministry here on Earth, he persevered in prayer. we should follow his example.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: understand what perseverance in prayer means. To discuss some characters in Scriptures that persevered in prayers. To discuss what our attitude should be while waiting for God’s answer. To discuss the blessings that will result when we perseverance in prayer.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1a. WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY PERSEVERANCE IN PRAYER? Perseverance in prayer simply means to continuously and earnestly pray to God over certain seemingly difficult situations a Believer May encounter in life and refused to give up or be discouraged even when the answers such prayers seemed not to be forthcoming. He must, therefore learn to hold on to God in prayers until we get the answer. The devil may try to bring discouragement and doubt but we must realize that God answers prayers and at his own time, we will receive the answer. He must also know that delay is not denial. God is always right there on time; he’s neither too early nor too late. That is why it is generally said that God’s time is the best. It is only by persevering in prayer that we can effectively live our Christian lives in this world victoriously and overcome every difficult situation we encounter along life’s journey here on Earth.   Q1b. MENTION SOME SITUATIONS IN LIFE WHEN ANSWERS TO THE CHRISTIANS’ PRAYERS SEEN DELAYED Although our God is a prayer answering God, there are times that the answers to our prayers may appear as if they are delayed. Some of such situations can manifest in any form so just consistent failure in the examination: There are instances when some Believers may be failing the same examination repeatedly despite the fact that they have been applying themselves to their studies. Another situation can be joblessness. The fellow might have obtained a good grade I’m very qualified to get the job but his application never received the attention of the employers. This may persist over a long period of time. There may be ladies were right for marriage and ready but they are still waiting because no man has come to ask their hands in marriage, while there are men when they approach any lady, they will not agree to marry them. There may be those who are gainfully employed or engaged and in good and profitable businesses but cannot make ends meet as a result of...

CENTRAL THOUGHT Those that trust in the Lord abide under his safety.   TEXT: Isaiah. 36;37:1-20 (Reading Text: Isaiah 37:1-20)   INTRODUCTION The Bible emphasizes issues concerning these perilous times or situations now being experienced. (2Tim.3:1-5).  These are those times talked about when men’s heart will fail them due to lack of trust in God. People will want to make it fast not minding the means. There is a lack of confidence among families, friends, nations and worse off, even in God. Man has become suspicious of neighbors and people they come across on daily basis. Mature persons take time to build up trust in people. Except instructed or inspired by God, it has become very risky to trust man, especially at first sight even when man may not want to fail or disappoint. Man cannot be trusted totally because he’s not infallible. God should be trusted because he is the omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscience. These are attributes of God for eternity, HE does not change.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: Understand what it means to trust in the Lord. Explain some reasons why people trust other things. Highlight why God should be trusted. Establish the benefit of trusting in the Lord.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRUST IN THE LORD? To trust simply means to have a firm belief in the reliability, truth or ability of someone or something. Nobody can trust someone he has not seen, known, or interacted with or introduced to by person intimate to both parties. God had revealed Himself as the Most-High with whom nothing is impossible He has been before man began and will remain who he is in eternity. The Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation have revealed Him to man as He is – absolutely reliable. To trust in the Lord, therefore, is to put our total reliance on Him to do all He says He will do. Trusting in Him is real faith which pleases Him, Man gets from Him or increases his knowledge of Him, and can now relate to Him as Father.   Q2. WHAT CHALLENGES DID HEZEKIAH FACE AND HOW DID HE HANDLE THE SITUATION? (Isaiah 36, 37:20) Hezekiah, king of Judah, a man that trusted in the LORD God of Israel [1 Kg. 18:3-7], was faced with challenges of threat of  war, over-running of his kingdom, various problems, and losses associated with the situation. King Sennacherib of Assyria, did not just boast for the sake of it, he was truly a man of war and would have executed his ambition to the letter, had God not intervened in response to Hezekiah’s request. Hezekiah faced facts and realities in their true sense and used his God-given knowledge to overcome his plight. He put his trust in God and wore his spiritual war weapons (Eph.6:10-18). He prayed earnestly with fasting waiting upon God until he intervened. He obeyed God as he directed him continually until his victory came. Hezekiah succeeded using this approach because he knew God personally. Yacht scene heard and believe the God he served from his heart and trusted that he will not be put to shame. HOPE IN CHRIST OUR STRONG ANCHOR, January 13th, 2019

CENTRAL THOUGHT Christ is the believer’s sure and firm anchor.   Text: John 14:1-6; Heb. 6:18-20; Heb.  10:23-25   INTRODUCTION We live in a world full of trouble and stress. This situation has rendered many people desperate and miserable. The night before the Passover, which preceded Jesus crucifixion, He assured His disciples of hope eternal, in heaven. This is by the implication, the hope of all believers in Christ Jesus. That is, Jesus has Himself gone before all believers to prepare them a home in heaven so that in the fullness of time all believers will be with Him where He is. This assuring word will keep their minds on Him. So that in all that they would go through for the gospel’s sake, they would not falter knowing that there is a glorious hope awaiting them. In the same vein, believers today need to be reminded of this basic truth lest we are wearied in our pilgrimages on earth. This will go a long way to help us keep focus and follow the example of Jesus (Heb. 12:2). It should be noted in this study that this hope is not instant to all who believe, but to all who believe and hold faith till the end. This study is specifically tailored to concretely establish what the hope   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To Identify what consisted worry to the disciples. To recognize what troubles the heart of believers today. To understand what hope believers, have. To appreciate how believers can extend this hope to the world at large. To emphasize how a believer can sustain this hope.   BIBLE TRUTH 1Q. WHAT COULD HAVE TROUBLED THE HEARTS OF CHRIST’S DISCIPLES? During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ, He was their teacher, provider, friend, brother, leader and above all, He protected them against the ferocity and aggression of the region’s leaders and Roman Empire. Thus, He was a pillar of strength and comfort to them. The sudden realization that one so dear to them was to be taken away from them constituted a great deal of worry for the disciples. This fear was heightened by the teaching of Jesus in John 13:36 – 38 while responding to Peter’s question. Here he ruled out the possibility of his disciples seeing him again soon, until the resurrection morning. This implies that he would have to face the arduous task of propagating the gospel and contending with oppositions from the Sadducees, Sanhedrin, Pharisees and the entire Roman empire on their own (without their leader and master). Mark 10:25. Naturally, the disciples, who were witnesses first to the persecution and rejection of the ministry of Christ became worried knowing that they could drink the same cup of suffering. This some eventually did. Furthermore, that they would not be able to go to Him for council as they always did while He was with them, was yet another source of worry. Worst still, the circumstances that surrounded the arrest, trial, and death of Jesus Christ brought a great deal of fear to the disciples. This was so much that Peter denied him trice and together with the others ran into hiding and eventually return to their professions/ trades. CENTRAL THOUGHT: Each believer is called to play a specific role in the body of Christ.   TEXT: Romans 12:1-8; John 13:14-15; 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 18-21   INTRODUCTION When God saved us, He did so for a purpose.  It will be a mistake if we take our faith as a mere observance of religious ‘rituals’.  Our Christians faith is a call to a practical life consisting of duties and privileges.  Each believer is called to commit  in worship and service.  To be committed is to be consciously obligated or impelled to do things that are of positive value to the system.  To serve is to discharge some duties or functions that will be of benefit to someone or to a system.   It is to contribute reliably to the welfare of the whole. Each new season, in this case, the New Year presents an opportunity for evaluation, stock taking, planning, projection, consolidation, vital decisions and perhaps some fresh start.  It is also a time to be resolute on our conviction and beliefs in all areas of life.  Our commitment to  the service of Christ is not an exception. It is a time to make a self-evaluation of our previous services, and also a time to make firm decisions on how we can function more effectively in the house of God.  It is the duty of every believer to complement our profession of faith with practical service.  It is ungodly not to be involved with either the major or the minor duties in the church all year round.  God is interested in your talent and service in this New Year, and indeed every year ahead.   LESSON OBJECTIVES The objectives of this study are: To explain the phrase ‘commitment in the service of Christ’. To discuss how the body of Christ functions. To identify how Christ demonstrated commitment. To list some possible areas of service as Christians. To identify traits of a committed life. To state the rewards of being committed.   BIBLE TRUTH Q1.  EXPLAIN THE PHRASE “COMMITMENT IN THE SERVICE OF CHRIST”. The Christian Faith is an invitation from God to an individual to quit sin and accept the work of grace accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ.  The objective of the Christian calling is to live in faith and obedience to the word of God and to promote the kingdom of God in our personal lives and the community.  It is to walk in the footsteps of Christ in holiness and service for the good of the body of Christ. Commitment in the service of Christ means to be obligated to the objectives for which we were saved.  It is to completely pledge ourselves to do the will of God at all times sincerely.  It is to give worthy attention to kingdom business as a matter of urgency and necessity during personal  reckoning. It is the absence of laziness, procrastination, laxity, and withdrawal in our attitude to the work of God. Q2.  HOW DOES THE BODY OF CHRIST FUNCTION?
