The Man Gideon: His obedience and exploits, 4/22/18-4/28/18

Central Thought: A child of God that responds positively to His call becomes an instrument of honor. Hymn: Stand up! Stand up for Jesus!   Text: Judges 6:25-40, 7:1-25 Gideon was an ordinary citizen in Israel with a poor and idolatrous family background. He had some knowledge of Israel’s history and wondered why they were going through their current experiences at the hands of the Midianites. Despite his background and his uncertainty about God’s presence with them, the Almighty God chose him as the instrument to be used Israel’s deliverance from the Midianites. Gideon obeyed God’s call and became an instrument in His hands to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites and to restore the true worship of God in Israel.   Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this lesson include To appreciate Gideon’s obedience to God’s call To understand that God is the Deliverer of His people To appreciate the truth that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal To realize that God guarantees victory for His people   Question 1.) How did Gideon demonstrate his obedience to God’s call? Judges 6:25-32 God commanded Gideon to thrown down the altar of Baal which belonged to his father. He was further instructed by God to build an altar unto the Lord (Judges 6:25-26). Gideon immediately obeyed as we read in Judges 6:27  “Then Gideon took men of his servants and did as the Lord had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night”. Thus Gideon demonstrated his obedience to God’s call by carrying out immediately the very first assignment God gave to him. Let us understand that God did not specify the time Gideon should carry out this instruction of throwing down the father’s idol. However, for fear of his father’s household and the men of the city, he (Gideon) choose to do it in the night. Considering the turmoil it generated when the people woke up in the morning, perhaps more turmoil would have occurred if Gideon hand destroyed the idol during the day. In a commentary on that verse Dake wrote “more than anything else, he may have feared the turmoil such action would have caused in the day time, so he chose the night when the city was asleep”. However, most importantly, our God did not condemn Gideon for doing it in the night. We (Believers) need a lot of wisdom as we go about fulfilling God’s call upon our lives and carrying out our God given assignments as individuals, families and congregations. We must depend on the HOLY SPIRIT for direction and we must be ready to follow the HOLY SPIRIT as HE leads and directs us.   Question 2.) In what ways can a Christian be involved in destroying “Baalism” and restoring true worship in our time? Like Gideon, believers can be used by God to pull down the various types of “Baal” we find in the society today, Greed/covetousness, crave for wealth, and fame etc. are gods (baals) plaguing men and women today. The man Gideon: His Call and Commission, 4/15/18-4/21/18

      Central thought: The abiding presence of God makes the difference in the life of any believer. Hymn: Stand up! Stand up for Jesus Text: Judges 6:1-24   Most of us want to know God’s plan for our lives, but we are not always sure how to find it. The Bible gives descriptions of how God guided many people. We can see that God’s call often came while people were completely immersed in the challenge of the moment. A good example of this kind of guidance is seen in Gideon’s life. Gideon was committed. His challenge was to obtain food for his family even though hostile invaders were making the growing, gathering and preparation of food almost impossible. He was resourceful and put a winepress to double duty by turning it into a threshing floor, hidden from the Midianites. Gideon was working in his threshing floor when God sent him a messenger with a challenge. His acceptance of this challenge made him one of the judges of Israel. He was a judge who led Israel for forty years to subdue the Midianites who had oppressed the people of Israel. A study of his character will reveal among other things how God calls His people, the implications and rewards of obedience to God’s call.   Lesson Objectives: To explain the circumstances that led to the call of Gideon. To relate Israel’s experience to the situation in our nation. To comment on Gideon’s complain and God’s response.   Question 1.) What circumstances led to the call of Gideon? Judges 6:1-12 In verse one of Judges 6, we read “ And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hands of the Midianites seven years”. Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and this led them into trouble as should be expected for all who sin against God. God delivered them into the hands of the Midianites, a desert people that descended from Abraham’s second wife, Keturah. Years earlier, the Israelites while still wondering in the wilderness, battled the Midianites and almost completely destroyed them. The tribe repopulated and increased in number that they were capable of being made a severe scourge to Israel. God had promised to increase Israel as the sand on the sea shore, but their sin stopped their growth and diminished them while their enemies who were supposed to be in every was inferior to them overpowered them. The Midianites made frequent incursions into the land, they allowed the Israelites to sow their crops, but towards harvest, came seized, ate up and destroyed both grass and corn. While leaving, they went away with the sheep and oxen. This was the situation for seven years. When all efforts to get succor from other sources failed, Israel at last cried unto the Lord. God heard their cries and sent a prophet to reprove them for sin and bring them to repentance. The person God commissioned for the service of delivering the Israelites from the hands of the Midianites was Gideon.   Question 2.) Central thought: The personal Ministry of Christ is still very active in the genuine Church of today. Hymn: Christ the Lord is risen today. Text: Matthew 28:16-20, John 20:19-29, Acts 1:3-11   After the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and before His ascension into heaven, He appeared to His disciples in bodily form on several occasions to convince them that He has risen. During this period of forty days He gave them extra attention in view of the task ahead. Even after His ascension, Jesus continued to physically manifest Himself to the church in some spectacular manner to show that He is alive and that He has been enthroned King forever. The post-resurrection ministry of Christ is very significant in the history of the church. It was during this time that the great commission was emphatically declared, and the promised empowerment defined. It was also during this period that it dawned on the followers of Christ that His Messiahship was not that of a conquering army general of carnal armory, but that of the Prince of peace of righteousness who has come to reconcile men to God Almighty. This ministry of Christ is still very active in the genuine church of today, manifesting with authority in signs and wonders that are done in His name. The risen Christ has the full nature of God and He is present with the Church in all circumstances. It is important that present day believers are continuously sensitized on the active presence of Jesus Christ in our daily activities, which is the actual goal of this study.   Lesson Objectives The objectives of this study are as follows: To discuss the instances of the appearance of Jesus after His resurrection. Examine the reactions of those He appeared to. To identify the assignment and assurances given to the believers after His resurrection. Examine the relevance of the assignment and assurances to present day believers.   Bible truth: Question 1.) From the scriptures, identify individuals or groups who encountered Jesus after His resurrection. The angels of God were the first to testify that Christ has risen and no longer in the tomb (Luke 24:4-6). Human witnesses who had encounters with Jesus after His resurrection were many. Some of those recorded in the scriptures are as follows: Mary Magdalene saw Jesus in the garden around the tomb and mistook Him for the gardener (John 20:14-18). The ten disciples saw Jesus and talked with Him while they were locked up in the house. Thomas was not present at this encounter (John 20:19-21). In His second appearance to the eleven disciples, the doubting Thomas touched Jesus and confirmed the marks and wounds (John 20:26-29). Cleopas and one other disciple met with Jesus on the road to Emmaus and talked about the recent events of the crucifixion, without knowing that it was Jesus, until He left them mysteriously (Luke 24:13-31). He appeared to Saul of Tarsus, then a great enemy of the church, on the road to Damascus in a life-changing encounter (Acts 9:3-5). Several other disciples were mentioned to have seen the resurrected Christ at various instances (1 Corinthians 15:5-9).   Question 2.) Victory over Death, April 1st-April 7th 2018

Central thought: The death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus is the basis of our hope for eternal life. Hymn: Christ the Lord is risen today. Text: Matthew 27:57-66, 28:1-8, 1 Corinthians 15:53-57 The disciples of Christ didn’t ever contemplate that He would die violently. They knew the power He had, His popularity among the people and His intimacy with God. So it was a big blow to them when Jesus submitted to arrest, did no miracle to free Himself and eventually died like a criminal. But it was not so with Christ and God; who knew that the road to the salvation of mankind would be bloody. To the disciples, the death of Jesus Christ was like a defeat. The enemy too thought he succeeded in truncating the plan of God; little did they know that this was the exact and eternal plan of God for the redemption of mankind. When He gave up the ghost, Jesus appeared in the underworld of spirits to demand for and retrieve every stolen mandate and authority from Satan. All the righteous souls who were held captive by death were freed and Christ led them triumphantly out of the pit. By this He conquered and demystified death for ever, and provided a new access to eternal life.   In this study we shall be looking at how the Lord Jesus defeated death, not only for Himself, but for all believers of all ages.   Lesson Objectives: The objectives of this study is as follows: To name those who confirmed the death of Christ. To discuss man made and satanic efforts to ensure that Christ did not resurrect. Discuss the spiritual events that happened between the death and resurrection of Christ. List the evidences that attest to the resurrection of Christ. List the implications of Christ’s resurrection; and Discuss what our proper response to the message of resurrection should be.   Question 1.) Name some of those whose actions confirmed the death of Christ? John 19:33-34, 38-40, Luke 23:55, Mark 15:39, 43-45 There were several persons who practically confirmed the physical death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. The most prominent ones were: The soldiers at the site of crucifixion who confirmed His death by piercing His side with a spear. The centurion who confirmed the death of Christ before Pilate. Pilate who believed the report of the centurion and subsequently released the corpse of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea who applied for and received the body of Jesus for a decent burial. Nicodemus who brought the burial spices and assisted Joseph of Arimathea in the burial of Jesus. The women who sorrowfully watched the execution and death of Jesus and took notice of where He was buried.   Question 2.) Discuss some man made/satanic efforts to ensure that Jesus did not rise from the grave. Matthew 27:62-66, 28:12-15 Many things were done to ensure that Christ did not rise from the grave and after He rose more things were done to discredit the resurrection. Jesus Christ our Eternal High Priest, 3/25/18-3/31/18

Central Thought: Only the sacrifice of the Blood of Jesus Christ our High Priest guarantees eternal . Hymn: I’ve a message from the Lord.  Text: Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:1-6, 7:23-27 The position of the High Priest in the Old Testament was a key and highly exalted one. The New Testament Church is not without a High Priest, Jesus Christ the Lord. The Old Testament Priesthood was a shadow of what was to come. Like Melchizedek, Christ is ordained a priest forever (Hebrew 5:5-10). Like the Levitical priests, Jesus offered a sacrifice to satisfy the law of God when he offered Himself for our sins (Hebrews 7:26-27). Unlike the Levitical Priests who had to continually offer sacrifice for sins, Jesus only had to offer His sacrifice once, gaining eternal redemption for all who come to God through Him (Hebrews 9:12). Every priest is appointed from among men, but Jesus, our High Priest, through God from eternity, became a man suffered death, to reconcile us back to God (Hebrews 2:9). As a man He was subject to all weakness and temptations that we are acquainted with, so that He could personally relate to us in our struggles (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus is greater than any other priest so He is called our “Great High Priest” in Hebrews 4:14, and that gives us the boldness to come “unto the throne of Grace that we may obtain mercy and fine Grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). In this study, we shall examine the superiority of Christ’s Priesthood and His present ministry. Lesson Objectives: To understand how the High Priests of Old Testament were selected and how it relates to Christ. To identify those things that made Christ To understand the present Ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ as High Priest. To know how someone can benefit from Christ’s Priesthood.   Bible truth: Question 1.A) How were the High Priests selected in the Old Testament? Relate same to Christ. In the Old Testament, the High Priest has to be called by God and selected from among the descendant of Aaron whom God had chosen to serve in the Tabernacle as Priest in accordance with the Law of Moses. Similarly Christ did not elect Himself to be a High Priest, he was also chosen by God, when He said to Him, “You are my son. Today I have begotten you…. You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 5:5-6). Question 1.B) What were the functions of the Old Testament High Priest? The High Priest was chosen to speak for other men in their dealings with God. He presented their gifts to God and offered to Him the blood of animals that were sacrificed to cover the sins of the people and for his own sins because he also was a man subject to the same weakness as they were.
