The Hidden Treasure (Part 2), 6/4/17-6/10/17

Central thought: The Kingdom of God is of inestimable value that must transcend every other earthly possession. Hymn: When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound  Text: Matthew 13:44-46, 19:16-26 In Matthew chapter 13, the Lord Jesus began to utter mysteries of the kingdom of Heaven in public and private places. One of the eight parables in the chapter is the parable of the hidden treasure. All men have different things they treasure at different times. A number of factors determine what men treasure, which may include their wealth, positions, race etc. The main emphasis of the parable of the hidden treasure is that nothing is more precious than the kingdom of God. The parable emphasizes the whole-hearted response a person should give towards the Kingdom of Heaven, and the need for total devotion and commitment to the Kingdom. This study will examine the kingdom of heaven as a hidden treasure. Lesson Objectives: We trust God that at the end of this study, we shall be able to: Explain values to be given up for the sake of the kingdom. Identify if there are sacrifices too great to make for the kingdom. Appreciate the benefits in giving up all to follow Jesus.   Question 1.) Explain some of the “Valuables” to be given up for the sake of the Kingdom. While salvation is a free gift, its value surpasses all things we ever cherished before coming to follow Jesus. To consolidate our grip on salvation, the new believer must give up those values that marked our former life: A.) Self: Mark 8:34-38 In God’s Kingdom nothing matters more to the individual except the pursuit of same (the Kingdom) and whatsoever will advance it. Self is an enemy to the Kingdom. It is that part of man that seeks recognition and acclaim above God. It promotes its own worth and value above all else. It finds it difficult to be subservient. If any man will seek the Kingdom his/her allegiance must change i.e. – deny self, dethrone self, yield to God and follow Him. The loss of self is the mandatory path to gaining the Kingdom. We must count all (academic qualifications, position, power, wealth, beauty, fame etc.) as dung if we are to gain the Kingdom. They must hence forth be tools by which we serve the interest of the Kingdom and not self. So when we come before the throne of grace, we must come just as we are, forgetting our social or secular status and then humbling ourselves at His feet. We must deny self by consciously laying aside our estimation of self, become like a child before God, and be ready to follow God in simplicity of heart, obeying all dictates by the Holy Spirit. We must not in pursuit of worldly gain neglect our soul no, nor for what this world offers, give up the kingdom. Apostle Paul refused to place any confidence on the flesh. Rather he counted all things as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ (Philippians 3:4-7). B.) Know how a man can find the kingdom of heaven.   Question 1.) What is the meaning of the word “treasure”. The word treasure means anything greatly valued. It stands for a collection of valuable things that is held dear by an individual. It may be accumulated wealth, stock of money, jewels, etc. The underlying fact in whichever form a treasure appears is that, it is what an individual considers as precious. Treasures are usually stored in a safe place. The treasure we are concerned with in this study is the hidden treasure. The Lord Jesus used the adjective hidden to qualify the treasure in question. It is not a treasure one finds on the surface or something easily found. It is hidden and so there must be some deliberate effort from the one in search of it, to find it. This treasure in discuss is the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of Heaven is a treasure worth more than anything else. Therefore, we are called to desire the Kingdom above all else. It represents the supremacy of the Lord Jesus in the life of a believer.   Question 2.) Why did the merchant man sell all that he had to buy the hidden treasure? Matthew 13:44-46   “Again the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hid in a field, the which when a man hath found, he hiddeth and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant man, seeking godly pearls, who when he had found a great price, went out and sold all that he had and bought it”. In contrast to the man who accidentally discovered the hidden treasure, the second man is a knowledgeable merchant who is constantly prospecting for goodly pearls and finds one. Both men recognize the worth of the treasure but the merchant traffics in commodities for maximum profit. Because profit making is critical to his goal the merchant weighs the worth of the treasure, for which he is willing to give up all he had to gain it. A Living Epistle-Part 4, 5/21/17- 5/27/17

  Central Thought: Members of a local church should dwell together in love, peace and unity.   Hymn: Blest be the tie that binds Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, 2 Corinthians 3:1-6,   Introduction: The Bible describes the Church as the ground and pillar of truth (1 Timothy 3:15). Efforts must therefore be made by every believer to keep it so. As Christians, in any assembly, we are expected to live our lives as living epistles that serve as examples to other believers. In fact all believers in a local church should take to heart the teachings of the LORD JESUS and apply them in our relationship with each other. Christian leaders should bear in mind the LORD’s discourse with Peter after His resurrection (John 21:15-17). We must love the LORD above everything else and be ready to do service for Him. The divisions, rancor, schism, quarrels etc. we find in (and between) local church assemblies today is not of God. Believers must resist the devil’s attempts to divide us. In this final part of the teachings on “ A Living Epistle”, we will consider how a Christian should relate in his local assembly and how together with other members of the local church, we can radiate the light of the LORD JESUS Christ in the society   Lesson Objectives: To know how a Christian should respond to some situations in his local church/fellowship group. To understand that the believer is expected to be of exemplary conduct in his local church/assembly/fellowship. To know the implications of not showing exemplary conduct in your local church. To know that there are benefits associated with living an exemplary life in your local church.     Question 1.) How should a Christian demonstrate exemplary life in his local church is situations where:   Members do not show interest in programs/activities. This kind of situation is usually a worry to Christian leaders. The factors that are responsible for this situation should be examined. Complaints such as the programs are too many are often heard, though experience shows that those who make such complaints do not show up in the church activities/programs even when such programs are reduced. Such believers are also known to devote a lot of their energies to some other things. At times the situation is a reflection of the general apathy of the society towards godliness. The believer should be careful so that he is not caught in such a web. The exemplary conduct to be shown by a believer in such a local church is to keep playing his/her part and keep praying about the situation. The Christian leader should prayerfully make an assessment of the situation and where he needs to make amendment, such should sincerely be made. He must keep praying for the congregation. Members that have a “holier than thou” attitude: This attitude is not healthy for any congregation. Self-righteousness does not commend anyone to God. At its best mans righteousness is compared to filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). The believers attitude in such a situation is to pray and ask God to heal the situation. The leaders should admonish the congregation from the word of God on the dangers associated with such an attitude. A Living Epistle-Part 3, 5/14/17- 5/20/17  

Central Thought: Living for the LORD in our homes brings glory to HIM and encourages others to follow HIM. Hymn: When we walk with the Lord Text: Matthew 5:13-16, 2 Corinthians 3:1-6, Colossians 3:17-25   Introduction: As it is generally said, “charity begins at home”. Therefore the home and its surroundings constitute the immediate environment where the Christian practices his faith. The Christian’s attitude towards his/her spouse, children, in-laws, housemaids, neighbors reveals to what extent he/she has allowed he gospel to influence his life. “Wives submit to your husband; husbands love your wives; children obey your parents in the LORD; servants be subject to your master; love your neighbor as yourself” etc. Ephesians 5:22, 6:1-9, Matthew 22:37. These are Biblical injunctions which the believer must keep as he demonstrates his love for God and obedience to Him. This third lesson in the series of “Living Epistles” therefore focuses on the Christian in his/her home environment. The aim is to help us understand how some issues, brought our way by our enemy (satan) to distract us from our commitment to God, can be handled so that our faith and testimony in the LORD is maintained. Generally, the Christian should understand that he must have the mind of Christ in everything. This will in no small way help him to maintain holy living in his home and environment.   Lesson Objectives: To know how a Christian should handle some issues in His home environment. To understand the implications of not showing exemplary behavior in our neighborhood. To know that there are blessings associated with living exemplary lives in our neighborhood.     Question 1.) What should be the believer’s attitude to the following persons or situations? A difficult in-law. Experience in marriage shows that some spouses have in laws that are difficult to relate with. Such in-laws cause problems in homes in some ways. They may give negative counsel to one of the spouses who may be their son or daughter, thereby creating problems in the relationship of the particular spouse or his/her partner. Some in-laws also make unnecessary (and difficult to meet) demands on their sons/daughters in-law. To prevent or avoid some of these problems associated with in-laws, the Christian should not be in the habit of going to tell his/her parents what happens in his/her home. There is no need going to tell your parents the amount of money your husband gives you for food or whether he buys or sews clothes for you or again whether your wife washes your clothes or greets you when she wakes up in the morning Etc. couples should learn to resolve issues between themselves and not resort to taking their matters to their parents. “Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife” (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5). Also, in dealing with difficult in-laws, the Christian should still follow the biblical injunction of “follow peace with all men, and holiness without which no man shall see the LORD” (Hebrews 12:14). Prayers are also very important and situations where in-laws become difficult must be taken to God in prayers. Finally, the Christian should ensure that he/she is not the one creating the situation making his/her in-laws difficult persons to relate with. A Living Epistle-Part 2, 5/7/17- 5/13/17

      Central Thought: A Believer should glorify God by his Lifestyle.   Hymn: When we walk with the Lord   Text: Matthew 5:13-16, Romans 12:6-21, 2 Corinthians 3:1-6   Introduction: The believers were first called Christians in Antioch by unbelievers because their conduct was like that of Christ. In similar manner today our lives must lend credence to our testimonies and the gospel we preach. Also, believers are the salt of the earth. If salt loses its value, it becomes worthless. Believers are also the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid (Matthew 5:13-16). Our lives as believers therefore should reveal Christ to the world. The Christian is a mirror viewed by unbelievers. Our actions, inactions, dispositions and in fact our total behavioral pattern form a book that men and women read daily. We are living epistles being read by all. The LORD Himself is our perfect example and we are expected to walk in His steps. The believer’s attitude in his/her neighborhood may influence a neighbor’s decision to embrace the gospel or not. Many persons around you may not read the Bible but they have you as their Bible to read daily. This lesson discusses specifically a Christian’s behavior in the school environment. The school or campus is a place where lives can be molded positively or negatively. The Christian in such an environment as a student or teacher or lecturer has a unique opportunity of influencing young lives positively for Christ. This is why every Christian in the school environment must consciously live for Christ and bring glory to His name.   Lesson Objectives: To know that a Christian student should show exemplary conduct in all aspects of school life. To know how a Christian teacher/lecturer should behave in school. To understand how a Christian parent can contribute to his child’s development in school. To know the implications of a Christian student/teacher/lecturer not showing exemplary conduct in the school. To know the rewards for a Christian who lives an exemplary life in school.   Question 1.) How should a Christian student live an exemplary life in the following areas/situations? Punctuality and regularity at school. A Christian student should cultivate the habit of being punctual and being regular at school. It is not good for a Christian student to be counted among latecomers or among those playing truancy in school. God wants His children to be hardworking. He does not encourage laziness. Lateness to and irregularity at school may be an exhibition of a lazy attitude. A Christian student should learn to wake up early pray and do his house chores so that he will not be late to school. Lateness to and irregularity at school may contribute greatly to a student’s failure or poor performance in the school. The habit of leaving home under the pretense of going to school but actually going somewhere else is ungodly. Such students return home at closing time and their parents may never know that they were not in school. This is a very ungodly attitude and a Christian student should not be involved in it at all.
