Commitment to the Service of Christ in the New Year   Central Thought: Each believer is called to play a specific role in the body of Christ.   Text: Romans 12:1-8; John 13:14-15; 1 Corinthians 12:4-7, 18-21   When God saved us, He did so for a purpose.  It will be a mistake if we take our faith as mere observance of religious ‘rituals’.  Our Christians faith is a call to a practical life consisting of duties and privileges.  Each believer is called to commitment in worship and service.  To be committed is to be consciously obligated or impelled to do things that are of positive value to the system.  To serve is to discharge some duties or functions that will be of benefit to someone or to a system.   It is to contribute reliably to the welfare of the whole. Each new season, in this case the New Year presents opportunity for evaluation, stock taking, planning, projection, consolidation, vital decisions and perhaps some fresh start.  It is also a time to be resolute on our conviction and beliefs in all areas of life.  Our commitment in the service of Christ is not an exception. It is a time to make a self-evaluation of our previous services, and also a time to make firm decisions on how we can function more effectively in the house of God.  It is the duty of every believer to complement our profession of faith with practical service.  It is ungodly not to be involved with either the major or the minor duties in the church all year round.  God is interested in your talent and service in this New Year, and indeed in every year ahead.   Questions and Answers 1.  Explain the phrase “commitment in the service of Christ”. The Christian Faith is an invitation from God to an individual to quit sin and accept the work of grace accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ.  The objective of the Christian calling is to live in faith and obedience to the word of God, and to promote the kingdom of God in our personal lives and the community.  It is to walk in the footsteps of Christ in holiness and service for the good of the body of Christ. Commitment in the service of Christ means to be obligated to the objectives for which we were saved.  It is to completely pledge ourselves to do the will of God at all times in sincerity of purpose.  It is to give worthy attention to kingdom business as a matter of urgency and necessity in personal reckoning.  It is the absence of laziness, procrastination, laxity and withdrawal in our attitude to the work of God. 2.  How does the body of Christ function? The body of Christ is made up of many members, each with very unique and divinely ordained roles.  No one can be overlooked in function, and the effects are mutual to all.  The contribution of each member aggregates to define the health of the entire body.  The parts are not engaged in rivalry but function to complement and sustain each other.  There is unity of purpose.  That is how the church functions.  Each believer has a unique talent and function in contribution to the welfare of the whole church.  All are forms...

GOD CARES   Central Though: God cares for His creation but those who love Him are the apple of His eyes.   Text: Isaiah 49:14-21, 57:14-21 One important feature of maturity is recognition that in life, problems and challenges are inevitable.  Children and “childish adults” fear to encounter problems.  Difficulties are part of life!  This is not intended to mean that difficulties are blessings in themselves, but rather that encountering problems is normal in life. Problems (puzzles, difficulties, etc.) receive different kinds of attention from different people.  Some people see every problem as a hindrance; others see problems as questions set for a solution.  One’s perspective of a situation determines his reaction to it. However, there are times when problems seem to overweigh an individual or a people.  At this point, the care and attention or help of a neighbor, a friend, a brother or anyone who cares would be appreciated. God is not only the Creator, He is the closest friend one can ever have.  He is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.  Though he may not be physically visible, He can be felt, and His hands move for our sakes.  His care for man is not limited to times of overwhelming trouble but all the time.  He is interested in our daily well-being.  He is concerned for man’s soul and He is willing always to bear him up in His arms.  The scripture has glowing testimonies to the security of those who trust in God. Surely, He will save us from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover us with His feathers . . . because of His care. God’s Care is not limited to His people but is very special to them.  Those who walk in His path have nothing to worry about.  Yet He provides for the just and the unjust.  Moreover, the sinner (the unjust) has a lot to worry about; someday, His mercies would be withdrawn and the difference would be made between His children and those of darkness (Psalm 91, Matthew 5:45; Isaiah 57:14-21; Romans 5:8).   Questions & Answers   What roles do men play in generating problems? It should be obvious to everyone that we have a part in creating some of the troubles that cause us anxiety.  Some factors that lead to this can be known; most of the time it is not intentional, in fact, many times we create the “real problems” in our attempt to solve “little problems”.  Consider the childlessness of father Abraham, that great man of faith.  His wife, Sarah, suggested a “simple” and “fast” solution, perhaps faster than God’s.  He agreed and Abraham stooped low to Hagar, a maidservant of theirs, in relationship.  The result of this manmade effort was the “real problem” (Genesis 16:21, 25:12-18).  It was by this plan of solution to their problem that led them to bring forth a life-long problem for their true heir even before the child came forth.  We all do similar things at one time or the other, at different scales.  Yet God cares still. Why do we create problems? Sometimes, it is lack of requisite knowledge.  This could be viewed as immaturity.  One good way to face difficulties is to make an effort to understand the problem if possible. ...

Central Thought: The Birth of Jesus Christ brought redemption to mankind.   Text: Luke 2:1-20   Every birth is a miracle and every child is a gift from God.  Over twenty centuries ago, there was a truly miraculous birth as the Son of God was born a man.  With a divine Father and a human mother, Jesus entered history as God in human flesh. Luke began his story with angels appearing to Zacharias and then Mary, telling them of the birth of their son, Mary would conceive by the Holy Spirit and bear Jesus, the son of God.  To help fulfill God’s promises concerning His birth place, Caesar Augustus declared a census which made Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem where the child Jesus was born.  Angels announced the joyous event to shepherds who rushed to see for themselves, praised God and spread the news. In this study, we shall be looking at where he was born and his mission on earth.   Questions & Answers   Where was Jesus born and what does this reveal about his nature and character? Luke 2:7; Micah 5:2; Zechariah 9:9   In Luke 2:7 we read, “And she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Jesus was born in Bethlehem as was foretold.  Bethlehem which signifies the house of bread was the proper place for the one who is the bread of life to be born.  Swaddling clothes were strips of cloth used to keep a baby warm and give it a sense of security.  They were believed to protect its internal organs.  He was born in a stable.  Stables were often caves with feeding troughs carved into the rock walls.  The surroundings were dark and dirty, an atmosphere the Jews least expect to be the birth place of the Messiah king they expected to be born in a royal surrounding.  His birth depicts humility. The baby Jesus in a manger lived an amazing life, died for us, ascended to heaven and will come back to this earth as king of kings.  He will rule the world and judge all people according to their decisions about Him.   Why did the wise men visit the baby Jesus? Matthew 2:1, 9-11   Although not much is known about the wise men as per where they came from or how many they were, they were men of high position from Parthia near the site of ancient Babylon.  These men from a faraway land recognized Jesus as the Messiah, but most of God’s chosen people in Israel did not. The wise men said they saw Jesus’ star.  In Numbers 24: 17, we read in part “. . . .there shall come a Star out of Jacob and a scepter shall rise out of Israel, . . .”.  This star out of Jacob is often thought to refer to the coming Messiah.  These wise men may have been Eastern astrologers who studied ancient manuscripts around the world to know what is said about the Messiah.  The Jews did not regard Christ, but these Gentiles enquired Him out.  They travelled a long distance searching for a king and they found Him.  Today, the wise are still...

Central Thought: Thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude to God for all of His benefits. Text: Psalm 100:4; Romans 12:1-3; Ephesians 5:19-20; Philippians 4:6; 1 Thessalonians 5:18 It is important that each one of us answer the questions: “Am I thankful to God? Does this reflect in the way I live?  Does it show in unfeigned dedication to God’s service and His people?”  What is apparent is that while it is appropriate to sincerely offer thanks to God at a designated service, God requires much more from us.  He expects that all we are, say and do should flow daily from heartfelt gratitude for all He has done for us in Christ Jesus.  It is also obvious that offering thanksgiving to God has nothing to do with impressing our pleasing men.  Those whose desire always is to please men must realize that they cannot earn God’s approval.
